Could CW's The Game Survive As A 1 Hour Dramedy?

While the ratings for CW's The Game have been poor, and while I think it's in serious danger, I admit I have no idea what the CW will do with the show at the end of the year. Now here's an interesting potential twist from Hollywood Reporter:

With the CW expected to complete its exit from the half-hour comedy genre at the end of this season, the creator/executive producer of one of the network's two remaining comedies, "The Game," is mulling turning it into an hourlong series. Mara Brock Akil is expected to pitch the idea to the CW brass this week.

Well unless they turn it into a little girl show they can forget it getting picked up! The only thing good at The CW is Smallville and Supernatural

  2. Alex

    Its an interesting idea.

If they can produce it cheaply then I wonder if The CW might let it fill the Friday slot at 8 just because they have nothing better.

  3. Louie

Get rid of the game. The CW do not have any decent sitcoms whatsoever. Getting rid of The Game will give them a chance to have some new sitcoms. I am personally not a fan when it comes to sitcoms but the cw is all about drama these days with shows like 90210 and Gossip Girl.

They also need to get of smallville and pick up another new sci-fi show to bring in the ratings. Something reaper is failing to do.

So the Game with Vampire Diaries on Fridays then?

The Game is already fairly “dramedic” as it is–much in the vein of its parent show (Girlfriends) except set in a more glamourous public milieu. With the addition of a few more characters, I think it could work beautifully in an hour-long format. But I’ve been a little troubled with the plotlines over the last season. There aren’t really any likable characters anymore. The ones who were before (the women, especially Mel and Kelly) have become trashy and often selfish. Malik and Jason were always bad, but Derwin has been drawn down to their level, too.

Here’s a thought, with Reaper seemingly done could an hour long Game be thrown under the Idol bus next year?

I think that would be a great idea. I personally never watched the show…or anything else on the CW until the show started running back to back re-runs on BET networks. The airings on BET have sparked all kinds of interest for the show and it is finding a new audience that never even knew it existed. I am simply obsessed with the show now and catch the new shows on the CW on Fridays now whenever I can.

I think Friday nights are horrible for the show though for people that would actually like to watch it. Tweens and college kids are usually busy Friday nights. Whether is working, school, or partying. The show would be better served running alongside a bigger CW show like Americas NExt Top Model or something as Fridays are worthless for this show

Well…the show is just coming on right now on BET so toodles……

I’d sure rather see an original hour of The Game–no matter what night they stick it on–than “encore” airings of Top Model, etc. People have DVRs and VHS’s and watch shows online if they miss them. We don’t need to take up 10% or more of the weekly schedule with REPEAT airings. How uncool is that? If you wanna make Sunday your “encore” night, if you really can’t compete, then stick Model and 90210, etc. there. But c’mon, just produced enough new shows to fill your weekly timeslots.

Get rid of the game. The CW do not have any decent sitcoms whatsoever. Getting rid of The Game will give them a chance to have some new sitcoms.

Louie, if they cancel The Game, they will replace it with some drama/reality show/rerun, they won’t be adding any new sitcoms.

The Game is a great show and the audience is fiercely dedicated. If the CW wants to keep brown viewers and advertising dollars interested, they better find a way to make it work. Afterall, African Americans spent $913 billion discretionary dollars last year and that figure is still increasing…even in a recession.

Who would sneeze at that kind of niche’?

  11. Alex

I’m really not sure I like this idea that ‘black viewers’ only watch ‘black shows’ – something seems inherently flawed about that concept. Are black teenage girls not just as likely to watch Gossip Girl or 90210 as white teenage girls? Or Asian teenage girls?

  12. JayDub

I don’t think the point is “black viewers only watch black shows”. But, the core of The Game’s audience is black. Gossip Girl and 90210 doesn’t really say “Hey, if you’re trying to reach a black audience advertise with us!” Alex, to answer your question: black teenage girls (at least the ones I know) would much rather watch The Game than Gossip Girl.

Personally, I am tired of the CW. I know a lot of black viewers will feel shafted once again if the CW cancels The Game. Girlfriends was one of the highest rated shows on the network, it was on for 8 years, and to have it canceled without a proper series finale was a slap in the face to black viewers.

CW planned the remaining black shows to fail. That’s why they threw them in the “Friday Night Death Slot”. The people running this network are idiots. They canceled the great show Veronica Mars when it got the same ratings as Gossip Girl does now (without all of the expensive promotion and shoving it down people’s throats). They canceled SmackDown! which was up there as one of the highest rated shows just because it didn’t fit their “target demographic”. It’s like if you aren’t a teenage white girl, the CW doesn’t give a damn about you at all.

Since I am not a teenage white girl, if they cancel the Game I am officially done with The CW. They canceled my two favorite shows, and The Game will be their third and final strike. Any show I like on their network I’ll watch online somewhere, but that network won’t get my view again

Oh, I didn’t even address the blog topic, lol

The Game is already kind of in the dramedy format. It is more dramatic than a traditional sitcom, and I rarely hear the laugh track at all.

I don’t feel a full hour would work. It’s better off as a half hour sitcom. The problem with it is that it doesn’t receive the proper attention. It would only fit in the 9:00 timeslot on wednesdays. It all boils down to Dawn and Les.

A couple of months ago the NAACP harangued networks for their lack of programming starring or aiming towards African American audiences. If the Game goes, along with EHC, she won’t have a job for the rest of her life.

And once the three original WB networks shows are gone, she’ll really have a problem getting at least 1 million viewers per show.

If I could gather up a solution for this it would be to let The Game and EHC run their course for a fourth and fifth season respectively, and then Warner Bros.:
    1. order a petition to have Dawn fired.
    2. find a way out of the joint venture w/ CBS corp. and continue on w/ Tribune.

I would really opt for choice #2. And that they get a man to tend to programming, and either buy EHC and the Game from the studios and produces shows from WB only.

  15. Why do they even air The Game and Everybody Hates Chris on a Friday while they air a repeat of 90210 in wednesday?

I say repeats on CW Friday.

  16. Riff Rafferty

“The Game” is a comedy? When did this happen? Every time I’ve suffered through it, it’s just a bunch of whiny people screaming and crying.

“Everybody Hates Chris” is still The CW’s best show (not to mention one of the better sitcoms on TV), so of course they’re cancelling it as we speak. Forget that it’s an in-house show which is debuting in local-affiliate syndication this fall and that cutting it after just 88 episodes before it hits syndie will severely hurt its off-net value and practically ensure one cycle and out. Yeah, forget all that, because god knows I’ve forgotten that we’re dealing with a trainwreck of a network run by a woman who has no business sense whatsoever.

  17. Tiffany

I absolutely love the show!! The number of viewers is inaccurate. It only counts Nilsen ratings. Everyone isn’t a part of that group, so why would they focus only on that number????

It’s wonderful show and has a great cast. Stop trying to put it in a perfect box!! It’s hilarious, it’s current and extremely entertainging. I would love to watch a hour long show!

  18. Nicole

Well I LOVE the GAME. I just started watching the show when it aired a marthon on BET. I watched season 1 & 2 that day, rewatched them online, and then caught up with the current season. I think it will work great as a 1 hr long episode. Did you see Friday’s episode. It just went off like a cliffhanger. As far as Girlfriend’s that is so shady! To have a show be on the air that long and then don’t even have enough decency to give it a proper series finale! That is crazy. They did the Steve Harvey Show like that too!
I say KEEP THE GAME. The airings on BET are getting a LOT of attention in the show. And the last time I checked Nielson is racist: they don’t hire minorities.

I did a research paper in college about that.

  19. ALEE

I personally love the show I have been watching it since it aired everytime it comes to an end I am always wondering whats going to happen on the next show I really don’t think it should come to an end because the show is very interesting I do agree with some of the other people that the show should be aired on another day being that I myself don’t have time to watch it on friday I have to tivo it so I won’t miss anything

  20. Alec

I say the CW puts the Game then in a full hour at 7pm on Sundays and then air Vampire Diaries then air Reaper at 9pm. Sounds good to me.
