Will new deal for show's producers seal Reaper's fate?

To quote the magic 8 ball, signs point to "yes", and not in a good way.  From The Hollywood Reporter:

"Reaper" creators/executive producers Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters have inked a two-year overall deal with 20th Century Fox TV.

Under the seven-figure pact, the duo will join a 20th TV series and develop projects for the studio.

Fazekas and Butters' exclusive deal with 20th TV effectively seals the fate of their bubble CW series as it calls for them to leave "Reaper," produced by ABC Studios, where the two had been based.

20th TV chairman Dana Walden remembers first hearing Fazekas' name more than a decade ago, when writers on the studio's Fox drama "The X-Files" raved about her skills as an assistant to executive producer Frank Spotnitz.

  1. And here I thought it might be the little underdog CW show that could survive! Silly me. ;)

  2. Richard

    Thank god!!!

  3. Jessica

UGH! I was hoping it would make it. I love Sock!

  4. cool

oh boy.. this will be a loooong post.

  5. David4

The CW REALLY should have already renewed the show the a season considering the outstanding ratings the show receives.

  6. David4

Umm… outstanding for the CW, just to make that clear. lol

  7. Alex

    Well goodbye Repear then.

  8. Alex

I totally did a typo on the shows name… I suck!

  9. While this doesn’t look good for our show, you can still let the CW know you want Reaper to continue even without them.

Please don’t stay silent. They’ll never know how much you’d like Reaper to stay if you never tell them. Tom Spezialy’s still around, and lots of shows do just fine even after a change in the guards.

Since snail mail campaigns work best, here’s the address for Dawn Ostroff at the CW:

    Reaper
    Attn: Dawn Ostroff
    CW Network
    3300 W. Olive Avenue
    Burbank, CA 91505

Please consider taking a moment to send in a letter or postcard.

What a downer. And less than a week after I began genuinely believing it was going to be renewed too. While it’s not a great show, it is a really fun one. It also brings something different to the table, which is more than you can say for most broadcast shows. I’ll definitely miss it, especially considering the rest of Tuesday programming (reality shows and procedurals).

  11. Reaper — I don’t think this decision is the CW’s to make. Even if the CW wanted to renew it (which is somewhat doubtful) ABC Studios which produces the show probably isn’t going to want to continue making the show with those two gone.

  12. ha, Alex, Bill’s next Renew/Cancel headline for CW will probably be “Will Reaper Reappear?” thanks to your typo ;-)

Seems like there might still be a chance, no matter what that article says? Would CW want to keep the show, with some of the current writing and production staff, since Heaven knows they’ve got nothing else? I’m still going to write to the CW.

  14. I changed the article title that included the reference to “Don’t Fear The Reaper”. Since my next post will be the last that mentions Reaper, I’ll have to use it! ;)

  15. Blue Sunflower

I dunno about ABC Studios not wanting to continue with Tara and Michele gone. Kevin Smith hasn’t been around since the Pilot and yet the show continued. A lot of the main writing and producing staff is still around.

  16. Alex

Its nice to know my typos might be put to some use.

  17. Alex

Blue from the POV of ABC Studios unless there’s another experienced set of hands to take over the running of the show they’re not going to be keen to keep making it. I don’t know how the Reaper production team breaks down and if ABC has anyone that might step into the gap but without someone who ABC (and The CW) feel confident running the show it won’t continue.

  18. Blue Sunflower

    Tom Spezialy is still there.

  19. NOOOOOOOOO! At first, I didn’t like the show, but now I really LOVE IT! Sock is amazing!

These two shouldn’t do a thing like that before knowing if the show will be renewed. Or they already know?

  20. Blue, Kevin Smith directed the pilot. Shows often have directors for one episode and that’s it. In TV the directors are far from top dog, it’s the writers (and most importantly the show runners) that rule.
