Showtime's The Tudors' bests HBO's In Treatment

Ah, the premium cable wars, where HBO used to thump Showtime regularly.  Showtime has already bested HBO on a couple of Sundays this season, and did so again on Sunday, April 5, 2009.

HBO's In Treatment is another show in the ilk of Damages, where the media elite echo chamber has been slobbering all over it lately,  but hardly anyone actually watches.  I didn't see nearly as much coverage for Showtime's third season premiere of  The Tudors, but it bested In Treatment even though HBO has around 12 million more subscribers than Showtime!  On the plus side, In Treatment was way up from last season's average, but that comparison would be more meaningful compared to In Treatment's season premiere last year (which unfortunately, I have not yet tracked down).

via TV Week:

The first two episodes of the new season of HBO’s “In Treatment” drew an average of 657,000 viewers in their premiere airings, up 137% from last season’s average of 277,000.

Meanwhile, the season-three premiere of Showtime’s “The Tudors” drew 726,000 viewers at 9 p.m., marking one of the few times a Showtime original has beaten an HBO original.

    who cares. both scores suck.

  2. This is normal for premium cable TV.

Those who pay EXTRA to get T&A, seven dirty words and then some.

    Like The Tudors myself.

  3. They’re both great shows. I DVRed them both and will probably watch them sometime this week.

I like the Tudors… soo woooo!! Didnt Sex and the city and stuff like that get 10 million viewers on HBO?

I think the TUDORS is excellent – extremely well done. Also, I like Showtimes’ THE BROTHERHOOD and AMC’s MAD MEN.

Being a history buff, I find TUDORS well cast, well acted, and tightly written. Very, very well done.

As for HBO, I greatly miss DEADWOOD and ROME. Excellent shows! (Of course, THE SOPRANOS and SEX and the CITY are missed). One learns so much from these historical dramas.

I love “The Tudors”, but that show is extremely inaccurate. I have a lot more fun with “In Treatment”. I don’t get as thrown off because they aren’t rewriting history.
