4/8 Update: I had incorrectly calculated the % of all viewing by DVR in the second and third tables. They have been corrected.
I'm going to add another table to my regular DVR viewing post starting this week, Largest 18-49 Demo Increase from DVR viewing. I'll be using 18-49 demo ratings as the basis for the calculations, not average viewership. We've used average viewership in the past primarily because they were the only Live+7 DVR numbers that were available to us. Now we also have 18-49 Live+7 ratings information, and ultimately they are more an indicator of a show's future prospects than average viewership. For those of you who are change resistant, I'll still include the same average viewership DVR tables as before. It will be interesting to compare the differences between the first chart and the third.
Among shows in danger of being canceled, both Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles and Dollhouse received big % boosts in their 18-49 demo ratings during the week of March 16-22. While I don't think it will save either show, it's yet another bag of grist for the mill. Interestingly, the percentage of people who watched Terminator on the airdate was strikingly low, perhaps because of the NCAA tournament first round games that week.
Enjoy all 3 tables this week. Note that I have also changed the order of the three measured viewing columns from past posts (to ease the production process). Live viewing is first and Live+7 viewing is third. That's the opposite of the way it used to be.

Definitions:
DVR (Time-shifted) Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data –Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day(Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.
Same Day DVR Viewers - How many people watched the show on their DVRs prior to 3AM the day following the airdate,
DVR Viewers - How many people watched the show on their DVRs within 7 days following the airdate
% of All Viewing By DVR - Of the total viewing of that particular episode, what percentage was done via DVR.

So Supernatural’s Live ratings beat Smallville’s Live ratings? That’s pretty cool, also both GG and OTH Live + 7 ratings were below Supernatural’s and Smallville’s live ratings. I know it doesn’t matter since everything got renewed anyway, but still it annoys me how much publicity Gossip Girl get when Supernatural barely gets any. And I don’t even have anything against Gossip Girl, the only reason I don’t watch it is because it comes on at a bad time for me.
I’m happy to see Lost get good Live + 7 demos ratings. I’m very curious to see how next season and expectedly the series finale do.
In England, rather than having to use DVR, there are +1 channels, where the shows are delayed by an hour. That would be great esp. when American Idol and dANCING WITH Stars clash. The positive thing i see in that is the Networks don’t lose as much money with the forwarding through commercials and all. So what are people’s views?
The big news for TSCC is the leaked finale script.
Denials – or more precisely, “non-denial denials” – rage furiously between the writers and Fox’s mouthpiece Hadley and Lanie Grace, while TSCC fans froth at the mouth and accuse me of actually BEING Lanie Grace (until the Fox moderator had enough and locked that thread)!

Apparently someone is trying to shop TSCC elsewhere and needs buzz, so they recruited Lanie.

Whoa! Office only gets a 2.9 live?! Wow. 30 Rock got a 2.6.
So basically most people that watch office live probably stick around for 30 Rock, but a lot of people that dvr the office probably don’t watch 30 rock.
This list really provides some interesting insights into when different shows are watched/their stregnths/weaknesses/trends/etc.

That’s a nice denial, but Friedman is a known spoilers hater and he would do anything to deny this as a spoiler.
Until we see the episode, we just don’t know for sure.
At least SOME of the stuff (the priest, for example, as well as somebody apparently being Cameron taking on a police station) is IN the official trailer for the episode, so we know the leaked script isn’t a hundred percent wrong.
And the cancellation rumor was not “widely debunked”, but merely argued against. Again, nobody knows for sure.
Why Fox hasn’t simply come and said, “The leaked script is fake” is telling. What’s the harm in saying something that will be proven true in four days?
I can see Lanie Grace making this up to generate buzz for her client, but again it doesn’t do her credibility any good to be proven wrong in four days. So what’s the point?
By the way, Josh Friedman has been known to lie in the past – and has admitted he will lie to the fans if necessary.
The whole “Riley is a normal girl” thing was a straight up lie.
Not to mention his whole “I’m ratings challenged” BS.

also we know that the leaked script emerged after the preview of season finale.. and there were some spoilers from the stuff.. so who wrote the “leaked” script read and saw those..

Those Live vs. Live+SD vs. Live+7 numbers for Office have got to have NBC fit to be tied. Doesn’t anybody in the 18-49 demo watch that show live?
Frank, I don’t love the % increase metrics in general, but, it seems to be a focus. It’s misleading in many ways and I especially don’t love reflecting it versus live instead of Live+SD since we don’t post LIVE numbers anywhere else.
It winds up painting a somewhat misleading picture unless you really look at the numbers (something our typical reader isn’t going to do!), because % increase does not equal percentage viewed. 57%+ of the Office’s 18-49 viewing was Live.
I’m sure NBC wishes it was more, but for now, it’s at least more than half
Thanks for the great article Robert Siedman, I don’t think the DVRs will make the most difference to Fox, but it’s a strong indication to a network that TSCC is on the WRONG timeslot (same for Dollhouse). If people are preferring to watch it on DVR compared to live, it means they aren’t available during the airtime.
Also I’d like you to take notice of the fact that TSCC is being compared to shows that are not on friday. The shows that perform well on friday have a completely different demographic (such as why Ghost Whisperer is successful). If you compare it to other Fox Friday shows like SmarterThan, which is also a different demographic, you could see that TSCC doesn’t perform all that badly, it’s just the wrong demographic to watch on Fridays. On Mondays it was performing better, maybe not perfectly, but that’s because it had “breaks” and no lead-in.

I really don’t know how to read these charts, and really don’t know what these numbers mean, but I know the show(terminator) performs poorly, and in this instance its near the top of the list, so thats good right?
Cav, no, not really. Overall, relatively speaking not many watch Terminator: TSCC, but its DVR numbers are pretty good for a show with its low viewing totals. It had 500,000 less DVR viewers than How I Met Your Mother, but How I Met Your Mother had 5 million more overall Live+7 viewers.
So it’s just an exceptionally bad night for the scifi/action audience. Did Fox expect Terminator and Whedon fans to all be home on Fridays? I never thought either crowd was exceptionally geeky, like someone who watches Star Trek or even Stargate.
I hope the Friday night project of theirs is dead and buried after this failure. I’d hate to see Fringe go from following AI, to the Friday night graveyard just to fill in the gaps.
