from THR:

Fox is so high on "Cleveland," the upcoming spinoff from hit "Family Guy," that it has ordered a second season.

The new 13-episode pickup brings the total order for the show to 35 episodes -- and that's months before the series has even premiered.

That’s suprising considering how their lasted animated show “Sit Down, Shut Up” fared.

  2. It most likely is because of how Sit Down, Shut Up fared. Animated shows need to be produced further in advance, so if they aren’t going to pick up Sit Down, Shut Up for any episodes next season, they need something to fill in the empty slots after King of the Hill is done.

^ Bingo. They figured at the very least it will keep the Family Guy dude happy.

  4. The Cleveland Show is going to be a very boring show to watch… in the renew/cancel index.

Sundays on Fox are becoming MacFarlane Domination instead of Animation Domination

They seem to be getting way ahead of themselves. I don’t think it will be the hit Family Guy is, or the modest success that is American Dad!. I think it will be more along the lines of King of the Hill this last season.

It’s MacFarlane…they are paying him so much…might as well put his show on the air…and i’ll definitely be tuning in

I know the reason why FOX will not give any chance for sit down shut up is because there was A LOT of trouble with the actors and their pay and they were asking for A LOT. I know i wouldn’t want to keep a high production cost show on the air for low ratings that has no good reviews. It wasn’t funny.

Cleveland fills the void in the animation domination line up and seems to be the PERFECT fit into the line up as well. FOX will yet again dominate in the fall again…plus Family Guy’s second Star Wars episode is supposed to be the fall premiere. I bet the’ll premiere Cleveland with that because I remember the last Star Wars Family Guy got 10 million viewers and like a 6.2 rating

This totally makes since to me, If this airs after Family Guy it will be a huge hit. Sandwich it right between Family Guy and American Dad….you can’t go wrong.

Bad Decision for Fox I think

Actually its not surprising. FOX expects his series to be a new hit, so they figure why not order more episodes now, and save them for later. The difference between this and Sit Down, is that Sit Down doesn’t really have the Family Guy/American Dad type humor. Its not the type of show that would bring high viewership, unlike Cleveland. Also it takes a long time for animated episodes to be produced, so this way FOX will be ahead of the game when they eventually do renew Cleveland for another season. Expected Sunday FOX schedule……

    7:30 King of the Hill
    8:00 The Simpsons
    8:30 American Dad
    9:00 Family Guy
    9:30 The Cleveland Show

I sincerely hope that they give SDSU another season…….or at least screen all 13 episodes!!! We love it!

  13. Remi

I think this show is going to suck. Cleveland is a totally boring and marginal character, Quagmire and Mayor West are 100 times more entertaining than him.

  14. What the fuck?! That show will suck for sure. Cleveland is the stupidest character from one of the stupidest shows, so no high hopes here.

  15. Chad

Fox is desperate indeed, I guess the 30min pilots all sucked. I wish MacFarlane would go away and replace Family Guy with Futurama again.

  16. Remi

Yeah Futurama is amazing, the more you watch it the more you get it.

  17. Jim

Yeah, replace a show that does well for FOX. I mean, I love Futurama too, but getting rid of Family Guy makes no sense.

Anyway, as for when Cleveland might premiere, I don’t think it’ll air when the next Star Wars special airs. There is suppose to be an episode on FG that deals with Cleveland leaving, so they might premiere it then.

  18. Cleveland’s a perfectly good choice of character to base a series around. His role in Family Guy wasn’t “the boring guy” but the straight man, and it’s fairly normal to have comedies revolve around the straight man rather than comic figure. There are many, many, examples from Seinfeld to… Chuck.

There, I said it. I went there. I introduced Chuck into the thread. Nuh-nuh.

There’s plenty of potential for the Cleveland show to go wrong, but the format is tried and tested. It’s just not typical of Macfarlane.

  19. Remi

Way better spin-off idea: Mayor West runs for Congress and wins, moves to DC and hires Quagmire to be the pilot of his private jet. The storylines take place between Quahog and DC, with the regular Family Guy cast making guest appearances.

  20. CrashMacKenzie

FOX will order two seasons of a show that hasn’t even aired yet, but they kicked Futurama to the curb?

I don’t think it’s a given that the spin-off is going to be a success even if they put it on after FG. American Dad has been after FG for a while and it’s not much of a hit.
