Updated: The CW To Abandon Sunday Nights

After repeatedly insisting it had no plans to do so, there are multiple reports today that the CW will be abandoning Sunday night programming and handing the night back to its affiliates.

Sunday night has been a debacle for the CW during the past two seasons. In 2007-8, who can possibly forget the Sunday line up of CW Now, Online Nation and Life is Wild. Oh yes, everyone. Then in 2008-9, the CW tried leasing the entire night to MRC Capital for their programming, but that deal imploded in November. One thing is certain, the CW won't do worse on Sunday nights next season!

And yet another one of my April Fool's predictions proves surprisingly close to the mark.

Update: THR.com has more on how/why this happened so quickly. Basically, when the affiliates understood that the CW was just going to continue to run old movies on Sunday night, they decided they didn't the network (and their cut of the ad revenue) to do that many have already cut a deal directly with MGM.

Well so much for the renewal of ‘The Game’. I am convinced now that it is totally unlikely. Not enough programming space.

  2. Well, that doesn’t make any difference for my Sunday.

They should’ve just picked up Moonlight and go from there. If I were CW, I would be living off other network’s cancelled shows… that may not be good enough for the big networks, but with an established enough fanbase to do well in CW.

Last SUN my local affiliate aired informercials instead of Jericho reruns and old movies….I thought they would of tried 90210/Melrose on Sunday since Football/Fox Aniamtion takes the mail audience.

The Game (1hour)version could be burned off durring ATM mid season break

Next season they will abandon Tuesday nights as well xD

What? No more box office smashes from the 80s?! ;)

  7. Jared

wait, so what am I supposed to watch on Sunday nights?

  8. rick

    sunday nights should be

    7pm – everybody hates chris
    7.30pm – the game
    8pm – privileged
    9pm – one tree hill

that would be a relatively successful night especially compared to the last 2 seasons

“As we plan our 2009-10 fall launch, we are in talks with several of our top affiliate partners about a number of creative and mutually beneficial actions that will build on our growing record of success,” said a statement from the network. “These discussions include an evolution of the strategy, which began this season, to focus the CW’s resources on Monday through Friday nights. As a result, we are now exploring the transition of Sunday night to our affiliates.”
    You have to love PR…

This isn’t any great surprise. I don’t watch any shows on the CW anyway.

  11. Bad Robot !

There goes the hopes of Jericho and Moonlight fans….

This was about as suprising as finding out the sun came up this morning.

  12. Adam

Who cares. The only great there is Smallville!

  13. Anonymous

Well….looks like Jericho got canceled TWICE now :>

Shouldn’t CW have at least waited until the delayed overnight’s from Sunday are released? This seems like they are jumping the gun.

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the CW stops existing in a few years, period.

  16. Lisa

Actually, I liked Life is Wild.

  17. Chad

Well its just my opinion but Supernatural and Reaper are the only things on CW worth watching. In my eyes everything else is crap but like I said its just my opinion if you love another snow on the network awesome for you!

  18. Chad

    show*

  19. Stacy

I’m very curious about how a network like this is able to make money.

  20. Ben

CHARMED was the only show that worked on Sundays on The WB (and maybe on THE CW as well).
