There have been no changes since yesterday (or the day before, or the day before, etc).   There are more rumors. A couple of people left comments and sent e-mail that on some Warner Brothers site they are listing information of season three of Chuck.  That doesn't mean the show is renewed.  It doesn't mean anything at all.   If you ask NBC they will tell you no decision was made yet, and if you ask Warner Brothers they will tell you the same thing.  A graphic on a web site?  You mean, like this graphic?  Meaningless.  It is just web sites trying to generate traffic.

Sure, I'm doing the same thing with these posts, and I can't deny pandering to the Chuck fans or being fine with getting web traffic, but I wouldn't make up "Chuck Renewed!" or "Chuck Canceled!" posts just for the traffic.  I'm basing my renewal prediction almost exclusively on the numbers. If not for Jay Leno, I believe its renewal already would've been announced.  That it hasn't been announced yet seems primarily to be a function of two things:

  • 1.       NBC hasn't gotten all its ducks in a row to figure out fall 2009 entirely just yet
  • 2.       As long as #1 above is true, it gives some negotiation leverage to NBC

I am confident that NBC will indeed pick up Chuck.  It's still possible that it won't, and some graphic on a Warner Brothers website doesn't change that possibility.

I hear a lot of "@!^& Chuck!  You show soooo much love to Chuck, but, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles is a wayyyyyyy better show!!"

On the quality front, I've seen every episode of both of those shows.  I wound up enjoying Chuck quite a bit more.  But that's a subjective opinion.  Who cares about subjective opinions?  I mean subjectively, I've been catching up on NCIS, and I like it more than either Chuck or TSCC.  Blasphemy, I know, but what can I tell you, it's my subjective, personal opinion!   According to 30 Rock,  I like NCIS more because I am OLD.  I am old, so 30 Rock might have that right!

What's not at all subjective is this:  Chuck performed much better relative to NBC than TSCC performed relative to FOX .

That's an unbiased, objective assessment of actual results.  Completely unbiased, and completely objective. If you don't like those results, that is of course your choice, but not liking the results doesn't change the results any.  So I'm giving Chuck some love because:

  • 1.       It has an actual legitimate chance of being renewed (TSCC does not, at least not on FOX)
  • 2.       Unique circumstances about delaying announcements for several shows by NBC precipitating, well, Fifteen Days of Chuck!

I don't find it difficult to separate my subjective opinions from the objective results.  I give this example all the time, and I'll give it again: I really enjoyed NBC's Life, and said so.  But the numbers stunk and I always said it had no chance of being renewed.  If I absolutely LOVED Dollhouse and TSCC, I would still be predicting their imminent demise, because those predictions are results-based, not based on my opinion of the shows.

I enjoy Chuck, but I can reel off at least five shows off the top of my head that I enjoy more:

  • 1.       Lost
  • 2.       House
  • 3.       NCIS
  • 4.       Law & Order: SVU
  • 5.       Burn Notice

Don't throw stones at me, but I could probably reel off five more.  The prediction for Chuck's return is not based on my enjoyment of the show.  I do enjoy the show and hope it returns. But I enjoyed Life on Mars, too.  Enjoyment of a show is decidedly not a sound basis for making renewal predictions.

All I can say, Bob, is that you rule. I am very much enjoying your “Chuck” updates. The fact that I visit this site obsessively for any news I can scrounge on a TV show probably doesn’t speak well to the state of my life, but whatever. I feel no shame. Thanks for keeping “Chuck” fans in the loop!

  2. Tommy

Right there with you on Lost Robert…..Lost has to be the best show on TV even if it isn’t the most watched show it’s truly awesome!

  3. Fin

Well I don’t know about Chuck but, ABC has apparently picked up two new shows:

    Modern Family
    Flash Forward

    Amanda who is Bob? LOL…

While you guys posted these recent rallying calls for Chuck, you just take swipes at TSCC in every article for months on end. That really was the difference. The latest of which is the Dollhouse finale article.

Who would renew DH over TSCC, other than a writer here out of spite? One Fox scripted show on Fridays actually had the capability of recovering the viewers it lost from a short crash, Dollhouse just sunk until the finale.

Ditto on what Amanda said. Big thanks for letting us keep up on the renewal news/wild speculation.

Ummm by the way the last comment I left didn’t appear on the new comments, weird

Being the busy guy that I am, Chuck is pretty much the only show I can make time for. I do remember loving NCIS though, as well as House. Haven’t seen either in a while though, should probably get on that…

  9. dave

I like today’s picture of Chuck and Sarah.

  10. Fin, more than one link usually winds up in the spam filter. Sorry about that…

  11. Fin

Its okay I just though my computer had gone crazy or something. Plus sorry about commenting about renewals on a chuck post but I couldn’t find any ABC one’s quick enough.

I think I got someone to clink on a link to the Have a Heart – Save Chuck campaign on myblog! No idea if they actually contributed but we all should keep on promoting it. Not only could it possibly save Chuck, but it also could save lives.
Robert, I don’t care if you like ten shows more than Chuck. As long as you keep watching it and writing articles about it, I’m happy.
Chuck’s awesome. It deserves one, two, three more seasons.

  13. Chad, I’m swiping at the numbers. Though that it irks emotional twits doesn’t bother me in the least. Neither Dollhouse or TSCC is coming back, but I gave a slight edge to Dollhouse mostly because it is produced by FOX and is used for the “Remote Free” trial. Not to mention that is what FOX execs are saying (TSCC done, Dollhouse on the bubble, but…) as has been reported by many of the trade press for the last two weeks.

Keep tellin’ it like it is, brother! I think you’re right – if TSCC was on NBC or on CW, it would likely be renewed. But being on Fox, which has so many programs that are doing very well in the ratings, it’s chances for renewal are less likely. Whether that’s “fair” or “unfair” can be debated, but facts are facts.

Chuck’s chances at renewal are better because most of NBC’s shows get much poorer ratings numbers than do the Fox shows (or most any other network shows for that matter) – and many of the NBC shows that have already been renewed do no better or even worse than CHUCK when you look soley at NBC ratings numbers. Now THAT IS something to “debate.” Why NBC would renew poorer performing shows and be dragging their feet on CHUCK. That’s a good discussion for people pro and con to be engaged in.

Bottom line is that you’re being honest and objective. If people can’t hack that, then that’s their problem. Bottom line is that CHUCK – “fairly or unfairly” is still an NBC “bubble” show (whether it will or won’t be renewed – its future is STILL up in the air), so for a site like this, IT’S NEWSWORTHY!! And if people don’t like CHUCK fans discussing it on this particular link or being “fanboys,” then they certainly don’t have to click on the “Chuck Day X” link on this site. Click on the dozen or more other links – you may still see some comments from CHUCK fans, but they will be fewer than on this particular link which AFTERALL is specifically a CHUCK link! Keep up the good work. You’re upfront and honest that you like CHUCK, but you’re also being unbiased when you predict it’s survivial or death based on the NUMBERS.

It IS a numbers game, after all. So – enjoy the site everyone – have fun with it – find out info. about your favorite (or least favorite shows) – but for God’s sake, IT’S ONLY TV! As much as we enjoy it, I think we would survive without it – or with less of it. That’s why when I see certain programs being promoted, I have to say to myself, “look, I only have time to watch maybe 3 – 4 series a week. I don’t have the time to watch 6 or 8, so I may actually have to pass up some good shows. If they continually get good ratings and good P.R., then I’ll go out and buy the DVDS and watch them during the summer when nothing is on and things are less busy. This site helps me to do that as well by poiting out good/popular shows that during the season I don’t have the time to watch. So, Thanks!, tvbythenumbers. YOU ROCK!

  15. Ninja, for some reason your link didn’t take. Rick, I inserted a couple of line breaks in your comments so people wouldn’t go blind reading it :-) But thanks for the kind words…

  16. Tony

I don’t thinks it’s possible to sit down and watch chuck and not enjoy it! I have season 1 on DVD and I have challenged all of my friends to start from the beginning and watch the whole season. When there done if they don’t enjoy the show i’m buying lunch for a week!!!

  17. Fin

Surely though the fact NBC has picked up six new shows (Trauma, Mercy, Community, Day One, Parenthood and the worse than Kath & Kim: 100 Questions) shouldn’t that hurt Chuck’s chances seeing as six, with another six being pick up and Leno taking 1/3 of the schedule seems like NBC might be getting a bit cramped.

  18. JJ

Chuck isn’t even on the same network as TSCC or in the same timselot so it isn’t a competition. What I find lame is the fact that TSCC is snubbed and used as a punching bag while Chuck gets 15 articles a week, all of which positive. It wouldn’t kill you to say “TSCC fans fight on despite impossible odds” or something of the sort. I do think Chuck has a better chance at renewal than TSCC, and just because i like TSCC more doesn’t mean i dislike Chuck or think it’s a worse show. I just feel like numbers are used to justify ragging on TSCC and spreading defeatism often for no reason. And why do you think there are more Chuck fans online than TSCC fans that would be giving you hits on the site?

Not so long ago I used to put NCIS very high on my favourite shows list. They managed to get my expectations so high during the first half of this season (first episodes were so brilliant), that I can barely stand watching the 2nd half of the season now (which is awful in my opinion, big disappointment). Previous seasons were pretty good overall but not something I would rewatch on regular basis. I don’t think anything can beat Farscape as my #1 anytime soon but Chuck is probably #2 now after exceptionally strong last episodes of Season 2.

Thanks, Robert for the “line breaks.” When I get on a roll, I just keep typing and typing!! (To add a “who cares” tidbit, I won the typing contest in 9th grade, back in 1979 – when we used those old metal 100-lb manual typwriters (not electric) – and no one even heard of computers!). So for all you 9th graders out there, take typing! It’s not just for girls!!) It will benefit you in anything you do in life – especially online posting on sites like this one!!
