NBC has given a pick-up to Last Call with Carson Daly for the 2009-10 season.  The 24-week exercising of an option on his current deal solidifies NBC’s late night lineup out of Conan O’Brien (who takes over The Tonight Show June 1) and Jimmy Fallon.

His new format makes his show actually not bad.

I actually thought the new format took it from bad to horrific.

But there’s nothing else on at 12:35 in the morning, unless you count ET, which I don’t. Lol.

I really dislike Daly as a host but I’ve found myself tuning in fairly often to catch his musical guests – NBC/the producers/whoever picks the bands does a pretty good job of picking bands that you won’t see on any other network show.

There are indeed great musical acts to be heard now. Unfortunately, the show is still called “Last Call with Carson Daly” — which presumably means that Carson Daly will still be on it.

I wonder how Carson felt about all the changes? When Leno got the Tonight Show, Letterman thought he would have got the Tonight Show gig. Did Carson feel left out or was he fine where he was?

Amazing anyone likes him, i think he’s the most annoying talentless zombiized android with buggy programming!

My understanding is that Daly wanted to move to “Late Night,” but was never a serious contender. Honestly, hosting “Last Call” seems like a pretty plum gig – he probably has much better job security than if he was hosting an earlier show, and I think NBC is happy with the show as long as it stays cheap to produce.

I liked Carson Daly back when he was on MTV doing TRL and other stuff. His talk show on NBC has been sub-par, but I think the new format works a lot better. He’s not a comedian like Jay, Conan, David Letterman etc…but he’s a decent interviewer and he seems to know music and picks great bands to perform.
