ABC won a night of season finales, but Desperate Housewives had its lowest rated finale ever with a 4.7 5.4 adults 18-49 demo, down 24% from its 2008 finale. The season finale of Survivor: Tocantins also fell to the lowest ever rating, down 5% from Survivor: Gabon. Still, in today's broadcast environment, down 5% is practically up!

With all the season finales, Fox (+20%), CBS (+46%) and ABC (+24%) were all well up in the 18-49 demo from last week. NBC's Saturday Night Live Shorts show struggled to stay neck and neck with the finale of Univision's Nuestra Belleza Latina.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

DH was awful and I can totally see it pulling a LOST next season..

  2. elliott

wow, if family guy didnt get high 3s/low 4s then fox’s animation block would be in trouble

  3. clutz

Caught the KOTH finale last night, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Can’t say the same for Simpsons, Family Guy, or American Dad though. Those ones just didn’t hold my attention.

  4. kaike

How come that the James Bond Movie on The CW gained so many viewers during its run?

  5. Bad Robot !

Why is it the CW movie tends to rise in ratings as the 2 to 2 1/2 hours drags on? Last nights old James Bond movie started out with 800,000 then finished with 2,000,000 viewers.

  6. Eddie

There may be some truth to some of these “Nielsen undercounting the ratings” rumors. I have never seen the kind of steep declines in the ratings than this year.

  7. DD

    How does DH’s half hour ratings(4.4, 4.6, 4.7, 4.9) equate to a 5.4 total?

  8. that should be a 4.7, DD, we will correct.

  9. Mega64

I’m surprised Survivor held up so well against Desperate Housewives. It’s great that it’s still a strong show after all these seasons.

  10. DD, good catch, my typo. 5.4 was the DH finale rating last season. Last night the average was a 4.7. Corrected.

  11. pawman

Is it just me, or has fox’s animtion block not doing as well as they did 2 years ago? In the fall 2008 season, average ratings for the simpsons were 7-8 million viewers. Now its 5-6 million. And back in 2006 it had 12-14 million. And in the 90s it had 14-17 million. What is happening? Maybe its because its poor lead-ins?

  12. DD

I actually thought maybe the DH half hour demo numbers were wrong. Like Mega64 I am also surprised at Survivor’s numbers.

  13. j

So good ratings among young people goes to: Desperate, animated comedies. 4’s with 18-49: Desperate, Survivor off-and-on. Though it’s pretty interesting how the latter two were neck-and-neck.

I do wonder if next season, Grey’s and Survivor will once again be their respective networks’ top rated shows, given Desperate and CSI’s recent downward trend…

  14. j

Or, okay, their networks’ top rated hour+ shows. I forgot about 2.5 Men.

  15. Paul PT

DH needs a good plot to next season, or they will have a lot’s of trouble, being send to 3rd place or 4rd (at least in the fall)!

  16. CP

These ratings should further prove that SNL should be put to rest once and for all.

  17. Patrick O

@CP, the SNL special was two hours of old clips (I watched it and thought it was pretty great as far as “best of” shows go) – it’s cheap programming, so I doubt NBC was expecting great ratings.

  18. johnthemon

Wow, king of the hill was up by like 0.8. Cool. Simpsons aint doing so well

  19. Rob R

This is the first time the May Survivor finale competed directly with the Desperate Housewives finale. For the previous four Mays, the Survivor finale aired at least a week PRIOR to the Desperate Housewives finale.

  20. Fin

This season Desperate Housewives has just not been that good, first all the jokes were just based on old characters jokes (now there just annoying) the story didn’t work for 24 episodes. Plus it wasn’t thrilling, its just been boring. They had the perfect chance to do an amazing new revamp with the season five’s premiere but from the premiere its clear the show its just loosing (or lost – see with season six) its once original and witty style. The characters havn’t evolved and I hate the fact that after creating the great mike and susan story in season 1,2,3 and 4 this season its just felt dead. With each dun dun dun moment being just like that really isn’t that bad.
