Craig writes, "I am very excited to see Rules of Engagement back on for another season. I am hopeful that this will be a full season order instead of just the 13."

Your hope appears to have been dashed. I'm told it got its annual CBS "we hate you but we need you" 13-episode pickup. "Cold Case," reportedly, also only got 13.

LJ, Eleventh Hour would be a credit to any network or cable station. Which is why we are going to try and work with its creator to get it picked up somewhere.
Any other EH fans are more than welcome to come and join our effort.

The cancelled shows are everything I expected except for Gary Unmarried. I thought Gary would be axed, but it seems CBS is very patient with wednesday so hopefulyl Gary and Christine will do better. I really like Gary so I hope it does do better. I always knew that between Cold Case and Without a Trace CBS would save Cold Case probably because its a year younger.

HIMYM was never on the bubble. It has a huge syndication deal so it was guaranteed that it would go another year as it needs another year to hit 100 episodes. Its almost guaranteed a year after that because the more the episodes, the more they make in syndication which is where the big money is anyway. I used to be involved in production accounting with several comedy TV shows in the 90s and if they broke even they were doing fine. The goal was to make 100 episodes and be syndicated. I cant tell you how much the Carsey Werner and Witt Thomas Harris made with their syndicated shows

Heh, true.

Do you know if they're giving out the presentations for the CW shows (like BP and Beautiful Life, I think both were only presentations) to bloggers? I'd like to hear other people's thoughts on it, even if it's not picked up at all.

But it's probably too late for me to try and launch an established television blogging site in the hopes of getting a copy, hee.

Annie, we find out Thursday. I should know tomorrow exactly what is going on. Thus the media will know and it will be all over the place.

I have a copy of BP that was sent to me. I liked it best out of all the CW pilots (which isn't saying a whole lot). It is better than most of the pilots I've seen from NBC, CBS, ABC, and FOX though.

I really hope even the CW isn't stupid enough to go with an encore during the week AFTER they gave up Sundays to the affiliates. I think Vampire Diaries could do well paired with Gossip Girl, and then sending OTH to Fridays. I'll take midseason over nothing for Body Politic, but I do think it would work in the fall behind OTH on Friday nights.

I wonder if they'll program Operation Fabulous or some other stupid reality show during the fall?

No matter, I just hope we find out more soon. I've never followed pilot season so closely before and I've got my heart set on BP some way or another. If you don't mind me asking, you enjoyed the presentation, right? About how long was it? How was the cast? Thanks so much, again!

You mean there's even a slight chance CW wouldn't put Top Model repeats there? I figured there must be some sort of contractual obligation considering their devotion to those repeats.

I am very excited to see Rules of Engagement back on for another season. I am hopeful that this will be a full season order instead of just the 13. The shows has held strong in the post Two and a Half Men Slot and appeared to have added another million viewers (to the typical number of viewers for a Wednesday sitcom this season on CBS)when it aired on Wednesday (I could be wrong on this).

I, for one, enjoy the fact that the networks appear to be focusing on comedies again. With how the economy has been, doom and gloom in the media, etc...it's good to see a focus on something fun to watch. Plus, it helps that 30 minute sitcoms are a lot cheaper to produce and (if successful)bring in money to the studios if they are able to make it into syndication.

Eleventh Hour might have been pre-mature with regards to cancellation. However, it all comes down to money in the end, and that type of format might be expensive to make and if the return is minimal, I can see why it was canceled.

The key for fans to try and get a "bubble" show renewed is to focus on three things...(1) DVR Numbers, (2) Advertisers...The show Chuck is a good example of this...The Subway campaign. If the advertiser who buys time on the network sees how the fans buy more of their product from watching a show, they will also contact the network in their support of the show...which might be the biggest argument/support a show can receive. (3) Campaigns such a letter writing and other creative ways...like the peanut campaign for Jericho.

TV is a business. Studios need a financial motive to keep shows on the air. Bottom line is money, and if the producers are willing to make concessions, the show will go on so to speak.

If you want to keep a show on the air, support it like fans on the show Chuck. How I Met Your Mother was a bubble show for a couple of years and the fans came out in droves and the show was saved and now it is a success.

Looking forward to an interesting 2009-2010 season.

Annie,

MON: GOSSIP GIRL, ONE TREE HILL
TUE: 90210, MELROSE PLACE
WED: ANTM, THE BEAUTIFUL LIFE
THU: SMALLVILLE, SUPERNATURAL
FRI: THE VAMPIRE DIARIES

What gets in that last hour on Friday? I have no clue. I heard BODY POLITIC or PRIVILEGED a week ago, but so far only PRIVILEGED has been eliminated. I expected that to mean BODY POLITIC but someone said that was a mid-season show. Now THE GAME and EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS are off the table so I don't know what is going in that hour. Everyone says LILY is dead too. So I'm clueless at the moment. It could end up being LIGHT YEARS. However that is the worst pilot I've seen in 3 years. So knowing Dawn she likely loves it.

I suspect that Medium placed between GW and Numbers will certainly out perform Flashpoint. Of course, it's certinly much more expensive also.

Nick C., do you have any idea what the CW schedule will look like? If they're keeping some of their pilots for midseason, and with GG spinoff being dead and all of those shows cancelled today...there's still room in the fall schedule. Another ANTM encore? Will they change Thursdays up at all (especially with Fringe vs. SPN)? Any idea what's going on?

There is no doubt that 11TH HOUR was on the high end of the CBS bubble, which makes it better than just about anything on NBC & the CW. You'd think that a network owned by CBS would go "you know picking up 11TH HOUR for the CW sure makes sense." That is exactly the type of show (and JERICHO & MOONLIGHT before it) that the CW should be picking up. They'd build their network faster that way than gambling on picky teens who change their minds every 5 minutes.

Tommy, in this case we likely both have the same knowledge. I know why NBC dropped it, but have no clue right now why CBS would be picking it up. Nobody asked my opinion at CBS! I'd have said hell no.

Which isn't an opinion on the subject matter. I think MEDIUM is one of NBC's highest quality products. The reason is that MEDIUM is tainted goods. It's an NBC show that wasn't good enough for NBC and NBC sucks. That is what some people are going to think and those some people might be enough to hurt the chances of success. However when you combine that with people not knowing the back story it might be hard to convince a new viewer to stick around.

Then again they may prove me wrong and get 10M+ viewers and a 2.4+ on Fridays from it.

Jimmie - why do you feel Eleventh Hour wasn't a success? It had 11 or 12 million
viewers every week and beat it's competition each week except when the Private Practice story was a continuation of Grey's Anatomy and the ER finale (which sent ratings down for CSI and Eleventh Hour). It was 2.8 in the 18-49 viewers which was actually better than Numbers (2.1 renewed), The Unit (2.3 cancelled), Ghost Whisperer (2.4 renewed) Cold Case (2.6 - renewed), and Without a Trace (2.7 cancelled). For a new show, I think it did very well and could have built on the fans it had if given the chance.

Nick I really think it has more to do with syndication than anything else. It's not like Medium was pulling good numbers for NBC, they were mediocre for NBC but they would have been horrible for CBS. I think Lifetime's syndication deal is the only reason CBS picked it up. If they really wanted it they would have never slammed NBC for dropping it. You have more knowledge than I do, but that's my guess on this.

Who would have thought that CBS would pick up a show dropped by NBC? NBC should be picking up shows dropped by CBS. Heck, 11th HOUR would be a hit for NBC.

Since Eleventh Hour was the only show on CBS that I watched anyway, I am probably in the same boat as Lourdes.

Funny how Eleventh Hour and Life On Mars (another show I liked) started off the year as BBC imports competing in the same time slot. I guess Eleventh Hour won that battle, for whatever that is worth since they both met the same fate...

There is nothing wrong with boycotting a network when they have made several bad decisions. And making fun of those people who are upset that there favorite show was canceled is pathetic.
Not all of us got our shows renewed.

Happiness is Everything has not been picked up yet. Since its a new show, that might not be announced until tomorrow at CBS upfronts. And if its for midseason, maybe not even then. I read that CBS has 8 comedy pilots and is only hot on one of them. But there's limited space since Rules, Christine, and Gary were all picked up.

CBS sucks and stinks for cancelling Eleventh Hour. I hope they sink next year with its new shows and the declining CSI LV. I'm really sad that people these days would rather watch a show with no sense at all than a show that will make you use your brain a little bit.

Thank you CBS. I won't watch anything you broadcast ever again.

I liked eleventh hour. Late addition to the cast was a good move. Too bad it was canceled.

As for they didnt have well known actors ... I think all 3 of them are fairly well known ... They all have been in stuff I have seen... not sure if they would command a higher salary or not... I would assume above average tho.

Aaron, I could see CBS holding onto it's option for Flashpoint (it was already renewed for Canadian TV) but not announcing anything at the upfronts. It won't be on the fall schedule simply because it won't be ready then and it only has 13 episodes per season. They can use it as filler instead of repeats, bring it in at mid-season or earlier when something tanks, or hold it until summer and start trying to build a year-round schedule.

Have to say, good on CBS renewing three of my favourite shows: Numb3rs, The Big Bang Theory and The Mentalist. I take it that Numb3rs and The Mentalist only got a one year deal unlike The Big Bang Theory's two year deal?

@vsaint, re: Lie to Me... as a fan of both shows, while they're quite similar, there's room for both shows and I'm quite pleased that Lie to Me is not in direct competition with The Mentalist.

what about Flashpoint? was it renewed? it's such a cheap show to make being from Canada. i really enjoy this show. if it's cancelled here and continues to air on Canadian tv i'll just have to order the season sets later on.

Old Christine was pretty likely, with the executive fondness for the show, but GU was surprising (to me, anyway, admittedly not Bill/Robert) given the number of other comedies they picked up.

Seriously, where are they going to slot all of them? Two new shows are sharing time with ROE & GU in some manner (GU Wed Fall, ROE Mon Spring again)?

Yeah it does look like CBS picked up Medium, which is a good thing for it's viewers. It is a better fit for CBS.

CBS picked up Medium according to this. Maybe it will be a midseason replacement to whatever new show they end up cancelling.

This season, it's more about cost than ratings, that is most likely why 11th hour was canceled. How I Met your mother is pretty expencive to produce, because of the hefty crew salaries, so I can see why it might have been on the bubble. It's still the best sitcom on TV.
BTW Anything on Worst Week? It seems everybody forgot about that show.

Ben Silverman is such an asshole, lol, with his slights of "Earl" and "Medium."
BTW, more word that CBS has officially snagged Medium from DHD:

CBS has renewed Cold Case, Numb3rs, Gary Unmarried, Rules of Engagement, The New Adventures Of Old Christine (22-episode order). It has not renewed Without A Trace, The Unit, Eleventh Hour. And I'm told that newly picked up pilot MIAMI TRAUMA is for midseason, and that it's pickup was a carrot to Jerry Bruckheimer after he received the stick of the Without A Trace cancellation. CBS also has bought Medium, which had been airing on NBC. Here's what happened: I've just learned that NBC did pickup Medium last Friday, but only for 13 episodes. But Endeavor Talent Agency which packages the show wanted 16 episodes (and Patricia Arquette's contract called for 22 episodes). A difficult negotiation ensued, and now CBS has swooped in and snagged Medium, which is produced by CBS Paramount TV, to air it with Ghost Whisperer. NBC is now spinning that Medium is best suited for the CBS demo than for the NBC audience, and that it rated lower than 2 shows CBS cancelled – Eleventh Hour and Without A Trace.
