Is CW's Smallville Moving To Friday?

We won't know for certain until Thursday, but THR.com has some news on CW schedule moves:

CW is said to have settled on launching the hot new drama "Vampire Diaries" Thursday 8 p.m., paired with "Supernatural." "Vampire Diaries" would replace the staple in the time slot, departing veteran "Smallville," whose final ninth season would air on Friday, probably at 8 p.m.

The network is set to unveil its fall schedule Thursday in New York.

"Vampire Diaries," about a girl in a love triangle with two vampire brothers, is envisioned as a new tentpole series for Thursday night where the network already has built-in sci-fi audience with "Smallville" and "Supernatural."

Meanwhile, "Melrose Place" will almost certainly be paired with "90210," repeating the launch pattern for the original "Melrose Place," which followed "Beverly Hills, 90210" on Fox in fall 1992.

With its setting -- a co-ed residence of young models -- new drama "Beautiful Life" is a perfect scripted companion for "America's Next Top Model" and is expected to launch after the hit reality series on Wednesday.

CW's solidly-rated Monday lineup of "Gossip Girl" and "One Tree Hill" is expected to stay intact.

FINAL season of Smallville??? is that true?

  2. Alex

I actually don’t think this would be a horrible idea, although it would depend on what (if anything) they’re planning to air after Smallville on Friday’s. Of course knowing The CW it’ll be a 90210 repeat or something equally as stupid.

  3. WHAT?!? SMALLVILLE ON FRIDAY???

  4. Pierre

Next season’s Friday ratings are gonna be FUN to follow! :D

  5. Jill

That’s a bit surprising, but when you think about it, it makes sense. Smallville and Supernatural are both ending next season, so rather than the network having to completely reprogram Thursday nights after both shows end – which would suck for them, considering that’s its strongest block – they ease one new show in gradually, to take advantage of the fanbase, and then hope it’s a success and can support another new show to come in the fall of 2010.

  6. Kenneth

Smallville has had several “final season”‘s. I’ll believe it when I see it.

  7. Annie

Didn’t they sign Tom Welling to a TWO year contract renewal? So I bet they push it another year after next, too. The WB depends too much on the DVDs, and it hasn’t even started syndication yet (I think). They’ll milk that cow dry.

I hope we hear soon that they picked up Body Politic midseason. :(

With the cancellation of Privileged, reaper, Everybody Hates Chris, and The Game, Smallville could likely move to fridays, and then the Schedule could look like this…..

    Monday
    8:00 Gossip Girl
    9:00 One Tree Hill

    Tuesday
    8:00 90210
    9:00 Melrose Place

    Wednesday
    8:00 America’s Next Top Model
    9:00 Beautiful Life

    Thursday
    8:00 Vampire Diaries
    9:00 Supernatural

    Friday
    8:00 Smallville
9;00 Repeats (likely ANTM or 90210)

With this schedule, Smallville can end and hopefully do well on fridays, and CW will be able to launch Vampire Diaries at a good time.

Dear lord, let it be the last season of Smallville. It should’ve stopped after 4 seasons.

  10. What about Reaper? Any news if ABC Studius could follow through with the syndication?

  11. Sorry Robert, I was messing with my site (and posted that news myself) in addition LIFE UNEXPECTED appears picked up (formerly LIGHT YEARS) and I’m not sure if that is being combined with SMALLVILLE or not.

This is absurdly great news for the future of the CW. Moving their top show to Friday! They’re geniuses!

Tom Welling was signed to a 2 year deal, and the 2nd year is for the spin off show based on the Justice League.

  12. j

Ew, really? Body Politic seemed much more interesting than something about finding biological parents and having wacky hijinx.

  13. Warner was upset with VAMPIRE DIARIES looking like a Friday show, and now I’m sure they’ll be upset that their money maker is moving to Friday, but that won’t stop it from making money over seas and in DVDs.

  14. Annie

Nick, is BP definitely dead, not even midseason??

Light Years over BP? I’ll be leading the parade when the CW shuts down. :(

  15. j, and LIFE UNEXPECTED is also just plain awful. I mean gorge your eyes out bad.

  16. Annie, last I heard everyone agreed BP was the best pilot the network had, but the argument seems to be that it doesn’t fit the target audience. So it’s in limbo. I’ve heard rumblings that it was dead, now hear it’s living.

Dawn is getting her Teen Female line up and it will either sink or sink fast. Hopefully for CBS it doesn’t sink faster than they can sell their shares in the network.

  17. Annie

Won’t they have to know for absolute sure very, very soon?

And really, if it’s the best pilot your crap network has, AND it follows attractive 20-somethings in their careers (which is essentially like OTH, the best demos that network gets) then WHY is it still in limbo??

    Ugh, I’m devastated.

  18. melbye

We have to remember that Smallville and Supernatural has that annoying male audience Dawnie doesn’t want. Since it’s Eric Kripe’s plan to end Superatural next year she has already dealt with that situation, now it’s time do to something that might kill Smallville also

  19. Annie, two things, one the best demos the network gets are from SMALLVILLE and then SUPERNATURAL. Second, don’t you know that the show is political and tweens don’t like political shows? ;)

  20. j

Fridays will be a battle of mediocre shows. Who will come out on “top”?
    Southland 2.4
    Medium 2.4
    Betty 2.3
    Dollhouse 1.5
    Smallville 1.4

It’d suck for Dollhouse if a CW show on the same night started beating it…
