For Sunday May 17, 2009, ABC News “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” was the #2 Sunday morning program as it cut the total viewing gap with NBC’s “Meet the Press” by 1.12 million viewers or 70% versus the same week last year (1,600,000 million in 2008 vs. 480,000 in 2009). This marks the 16th consecutive week “This Week” has closed the total viewing gap with “Meet.” Among Adults 25-54, “This Week” closed the gap with “Meet” by 62% (530,000 in 2008 vs. 200,000 in 2009).

“This Week” was also the only Sunday morning discussion show to grow in both Total Viewers (+11%) and the Adults 25-54 demographic (+13%) versus the same week in 2008. In comparison, “Meet” declined -20% in viewers and -16% among A25-54, while CBS’ “Face the Nation” grew +2% in Total Viewers and dropped -13% in the demo.

Season to date, “This Week” continues to dominate the second-place position among both Adults 25-54 and Total Viewers and experience the most growth among Total Viewers compared to the other Sunday shows versus last year. Averaging 3.26 million Total Viewers, the ABC show versus last year is up +18% and +10% in the demo with 1.12 million Adults 25-54.

Year to date, “This Week” continues to cut the total viewing and demo gaps with “Meet” as well. Among Total Viewers for 2009 so far, “This Week” has closed the gap with “Meet” by 49% (1,350,000 in 2008 vs. 690,000 in 2009) compared to last year. In Adults 25-54, the gap has been cut by 26% versus the same time period last year (420,000 in 2008 vs. 310,000 in 2009).

For the recently completed May Sweep according to Nielsen Media Research, “This Week” placed second among both Total Viewers and Adults 25-54, marking the 5th consecutive sweep “This Week” has placed second among Total Viewers. With 2.72 million viewers, “This Week” posted its best Total Viewer delivery for a May sweep since 1999, while “Meet the Press” dropped to its lowest Total Viewer delivery for a May Sweep since 1993. Versus May 2008, “This Week” grew +3%, as “Meet” posted a loss of -23% among Total Viewers and -24% among A25-54. “This Week” also closed the total viewing gap with “Meet” by 69% vs. May 2008, making it the smallest total viewing gap (470,000) between the two shows since May 1997.

George Stephanopoulos is the anchor of “This Week” and Ian Cameron is the executive producer. The program airs Sundays on the ABC Television Network.
