all the NHL has to do is stay away from the NBA games, and they will consistantly pick up solid ratings on NBC or Versus, although… I am told that the NHL stupidly put game 4 the same time that the NBA has game 1 of their finals… NOT SMART… That is possibly why the NHL has a game 7 on a friday, because NBA wont air any of their games on fridays, so the NHL wanted to stay clear. I think the NHL and NBC are doing a good job stradegy wise.

Regarding the NHL Schedule and NBC Vs. Versus

The networks(NBC, Versus and CBC) all have a strong voice in the NHL schedule (which is why they had back to back games this past weekend) however the league has the final say. One factor in choosing game nights is building availability (like concerts already on the building schedule).

The NBC and Versus current contracts with the NHL state that Versus gets 2 games in the NHL finals and NBC gets the rest that is why Versus gets games 3 & 4 in Pitt.

The networks also become exclusive in the U.S. for the Conference Finals and Finals which gives the ratings a boost over the first 2 rounds where the home and visiting teams also broadcast in their home towns (such as Fox Sports net in Pittsburgh or Comcast in Philadelphia) which gives the networks ratings competition as the “locals” like to hear their own hometown announcers on the game.

All that being said I’m thrilled our ratings were so high…hopefully the Pens will come back and make a great series out of it.

Here’s the Canadian NHL numbers for the weekend – they were strong, but not HUGE by any means (due to the lack of a Canadian team in the finals)

“Hockey roared back on CBC as the Detroit-Pittsburgh Stanley Cup opener drew 1,726,000 Saturday. Another 1,875,000 tuned in Sunday night for Game Two.”

Last years Game 1, drew 2.11 million cdn viewers.
usually peaks about 4 million for later games 6 or 7.

there are multiple sources for schedule information from the networks themselves (see above link) to sites like TVGuide.com which offer TV listings. For schedule information those are the best places to look.

people PLEASE STOP ASKING FOR CABLE RATINGS in the BROADCAST overnight posts.

We post the information for cable shows WHEN WE SEE IT which is ALWAYS AFTER we get the overnight numbers for broadcast. Cable overnight numbers are NOT published as swiftly as the preliminary broadcast numbers, so there is simply no way to put the two together. Sorry.

MTV is generally pretty good about providing us with ratings info as soon as they have it (at least when the numbers are good). I’d expect to see them by 5pm eastern time or so.

julia, Detroit is an original 6 team and Sid Crosby is a hugely popular Canadian player, and I think that helps offset the fact that neither team is Canadian. It’s not like its a Carolina vs. Anaheim.

I think its pretty funny that NBC has stumbled into the perfect time for hockey (summer, Sunday, nothing but repeats to compete with) and they have scheduled a possible Game 7 for a FRIDAY night. I feel like I should change my posting name here to “NBCSux” or something.

And a better question…why doesnt NBC want ALL seven games of the Stanley Cup finals? Versus is now most-likely going to get its best number ever with Games 3 & 4 and take away 5-6 million sports fans with them who, you know, may want to watch that Conan guy at 1130.

David, I’m a huge Breaking Bad fan but I thought the finale was a bit of a letdown. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone but I thought the big reveal that they’ve been setting up all season was hugely disappointing. They’ll have to do something big to make it worth it next season.

You probbaly never see Canadian ratings for the nhl, but they’re through the roof most likely. People forget that this is only half the story for the nhl’s popularity. I’d wager that the NHL and NBA have similar North American audiences.(although the NBA has a bigger worldwide audience.)

Please post the CBC numbers for the NHL finals if you ever see them, I’d be curious.

David4, again with the “NHL stole my lunch money” grudge?

Demos are all that matter to the TV business. Viewership’s just for PR boasting (or in this case historical reference when I don’t have past year demo numbers, which is often the case).

If it makes you feel better, the 18-49 demo of 2.2 on Sunday for the NHL game was much better than Saturday’s 1.7.

I’d love to compare demo numbers for past NHL Stanely Cup Finals years, but I don’t have them!

“Breaking Bad” last night was one of the greatest tv show episodes in history. “Ice Road Truckers” was good too because the new location of the show is especially treacherous. I cannot believe how many people still watch broadcast tv. Most of these broadcast shows will beat the ratings of those two great cable shows last night.

Well, I guess some kudos of a sort are in line for the NHL. It’s good to see more than 10 people who aren’t physically at a game or a specialized sports bar actually watched a game.
For once, the NHL has managed to do something smart. That is, schedule thier games on a date where it is arguably the weakest time that a Sunday will ever be. They also got caught a break by not having an NBA game to contend with.
