Night two of Conan O’Brien as new host of NBC’s The Tonight Show averaged a solid 5.0 rating/12 share in the metered markets, according to Nielsen Media Research data.

Comparably, that was the highest overnight rating for a Tuesday Tonight Show telecast since Feb. 27, 2007. And it was up by a considerable 28 percent over the second quarter 2009 Tuesday overnight average (3.9).

Versus the competition, Conan on The Tonight Show beat CBS’ Late Show with David Letterman (3.0/ 7) by 67 percent and ABC’s combination of Nightline (2.7/ 6) and Jimmy Kimmel Live (1.2/ 4) by 146 percent. Even so, last night’s overnight performance was down by 30 percent from the inflated 7.1/17 launch on Monday.

Those numbers still aren’t bad! It was to be expected that they would drop after the first night. I hope they at least stay solid and he can continue to beat the compitition. I think Conan is a great Tonight Show host and I’m excited about the transfer from Leno to Conan. And Leno fans, don’t worry…you’re gonna get Leno in “primetime” here pretty soon! ;)

  2. Joe

Leno fans: Swith to Letterman. It’s the best thing to do.

  3. Bob

I find no lack of amusement that Joe’s comment contained a typo that made it sound like a lisp, similarly to Letterman. Ironic.

That being said, I still think Conan is much better than the self-induldging style of Letterman. I cannot watch the Late Show for more than 5 minutes before he starts cackling and I get annoyed. Plus I think Conan puts a lot more work into his program

Still quite good ratings. NBC is having quite good fortune right now. I doubt it will last ;)

Ditto Jenna’s comments! The end. :)

Joe: How do I swith? I might be tempted to do it if I knew what that meant!

  7. Flounder

If Leno goes to primetime I am moving to Canada.

  8. Flounder, start packing!

  9. I wonder what is being said in the Letterman and Kimmel camps? What are their respective networks thinking right now?

I see Letterman made some jokes about Conan and took a little shot at Leno poking fun of the way he talks on Monday. Anyone know what Kimmel did if anything?

  10. Andrew

So how long should it be before Conan’s ratings reach a settling point.

  11. RJ

I now watch Family Guy repeats at 11:30 on Adult Swim if I even bother staying up. I can’t wait until Conan’s numbers fall lower than Jay’s. Conan is SOOOO annoying!

  12. Jenna

Yeah Flounder…you better pack your bags! I hear Canada is lovely this time of year! ;) Leno moves to primetime in September! 10PM M-F on NBC…

  13. R.G.

Yes…Conans numbers will drop lower…when Jay Leno (or is it Beaker from Sesame Street in disguise) returns to prime time…nuff said!

  14. Lance

The second show was almost perfect…Conan should be fine…there’s an uneasiness you can always feel when a talk show doesnt work…i dont get any of that on Conan’s Tonight show…

  15. Guy-Dude-Bro

It’s nice to no longer have this franchise mired in hackery.

  16. Jesse

RJ, that’s sort of weird, Family Guy fans almost feels like they’d be in Conan’s target audience. Both Family Guy and Conan feature heaps of incredibly random humor.

Going back to the main discussion, I doubt Leno did anything as hilarious in his whole run as Conan’s Twitter thing last night. That had me rolling.

  17. Chuck Bartowski III

I remember Leno’s inaugural crap, like “Celebrity in a Sack.” I still cannot compose myself thinking of Conan and that bird!!

I thought Monday was uneven, but Tuesday made me want more of Conan!

I would not be surprised if his numbers settle in at a higher level than Leno’s.

Conan appeals to a completely different demo, it would be cool to see what happens ratings-wise. I’ve seen the first two shows and laughed myself to pieces.

  19. Mike

Well looks like Conan is now back to himself, with Wed nights’ program being VERY late-night-ish (In the Year 2000 err 3000, the “Max is an awful guy” spot, etc etc). Be interesting to see how Leno’s audience deals with that =)

And I agree with you Jenna, Conan > Leno any day! (Not that I didn’t like Leno…but…you know..)

  20. Matt

You know Leno would be pissed at his fans for not atleast giving Conan a chance. Leno respects Conan very much. Conan really wants this to work and his clips are really funny with some of the stuff he’s doing.
