PORTLAND, Ore., June 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Rentrak Corporation (NASDAQ:RENT) , a multi-screen media measurement and research company serving the entertainment industry, today announced the “Rentrak State Of VOD: Trend Report 2008” is now available for purchase. The 25-page report encompasses data from January 2007 through December 2008, and is based on an aggregation of data from Rentrak’s OnDemand Essentials service, which has processed more than 17 billion on demand transactions to date from the company’s operator partners.
On demand continues to gain popularity with consumers who enjoy the instant availability of VOD and as operators and programmers increase the quantity of titles available. According to Magna Global, 37% of TV households had access to on demand programming at the end of 2008. The “Rentrak State Of VOD: Trend Report 2008” analyzes trends in Free On Demand (FOD), Subscription On Demand (SVOD), Transactional On Demand (TOD), HD VOD and Adult Transactional On Demand performance, and for the first time, includes both benchmarks and decay curves for the top five FOD categories of content: Kids, Music, TV Entertainment, Free Movies and Cutting Edge.
Rentrak “State of VOD Report” Highlights:
— When comparing system to system growth, the on demand platform overall has continued to experience double digit increases in usage year over year (+21% in orders)
— On average, consumers who use VOD order 17.81 VOD assets per month
— In 2008, FOD accounted for 74% of all non-adult orders, while SVOD accounted for 23% and TOD accounted for 3%
— In a given month, around 13% of all VOD-enabled set-top boxes purchased TOD content
