Our friend James Hibberd is out with Monday's numbers for the break-up episode of Jon & Kate Plus 8. With the announcement that the show is going on hiatus until August that record will stand for a while, perhaps for good.

Monday's breakup episode of TLC's "Jon & Kate Plus 8" was the most-watched episode of the show ever with 10.6 million viewers.

James has lots more at The Live Feed.

And THR.com (although not clear if it was James or not) definitely had the best headline with "Jon minus Kate Equals 10.6 million".

That’s just an amazing number . . . though I’m guessing it will be the series high, because where could the show go that would top a divorce announcement?

  2. RJ

TLC can also promote it BIG like they did with this announcement.
I’m sure the tabloids will be all over it as well.
It wont go near 10 million again, but it could come back at 5-6 million.
I applaud TLC for their decision to take a hiatus on the show. :)

what a sad world we live in

    QW,
I bet the ratings could go higher if one of them starts dating. :o

I promise you that right now everyone at TLC is hoping and wishing that this divorce gets ugly because that’s the only way you sustain numbers at this level. Everyone will tune in for a car crash and the mud slinging that goes hand-in-hand with a messy divorce would be like a dream come true for TLC. Of course there’s also the bigger question of how they’d continue the show with a divorce and whether they can keep the name Jon & Kate Plus 8.

This Jon & Kate Plus 8 divorce thing is a joke I mean wasn’t this show supposed to be about the kids? Now it’s about their fame seeking jokes of parents I can’t believe 10.6 million people watched that garbage but atleast the show will fall flat again unless they pull out another ratings stunt

I am curious to see how the first ever commercial free Monday Night RAW did last night I watched it and was very entertained but the Donald Trump thing did not last long as Vince McMahon bought back RAW (in Storyline of course for double what Donald Trump gave for it so The Donald Experiment on RAW lasted all of two weeks

  7. I would agree with Alex because everyone around me wants to watch the train wreck. For the show, all I want to say is that I have very high standard for the society now I am disappointed.

It is all down hill from this. It probably will get a record LOW by the end of the season

it’s an event – not merely an episode.

there should be an award given to Jon and Kate for promoting Crooked Houses. They plugged the living daylights out of that company.

  10. Didn’t we see this before in AMERICAN FAMILY? This is so 1972…

  11. so apparently nobody does want to see a happy family

Commercial free is the way forward apparently – The second hour of the show averaged in the region of 7.3 million viewers and 4.8. The first hour scored a 4.2 although I’m not sure how many viewers that equates to but its well up on the numbers they’ve been pulling for the past three years. Apparently this week is going to be a BIG week for cable.

  13. Alex

EDIT – And the first hour of Raw scored in the region of 6.3 million viewers, which probably won’t be enough to beat The Closer or Royal Pains.

there are about two couples that have stayed together after the reality cameras left their house – The Osbournes – although that could be because Ozzy’s too messed up to notice. Can’t think of the second, but there should be.

    Hogans
    Barkers
    Nick and Jessica
    KFed and Britney

Jon & Kate will get higher ratings when they have the “getting back together episode.” That will be next season.

  16. Mike G., Perhaps, but first we have to have the “screaming at each other” and “red faced crying” episodes. ;)

  17. fred

divorce court and a custody battle would make 15 million viewers (easily) for the verdict and interesting television

OH MY EFFIN’ GOSH. According to EW (http://news-briefs.ew.com/2009/06/jon-and-kate-ratings.html), the show got 6.5 MILLION 18-49.

That’s higher than the averages of practically every show on broadcast TV this season. I had no idea how high a % of the show’s viewers were in the demo. That’s even more amazing than hitting over 10 million.

  19. Jeremy

The show’s got massive buzz right now, thus the ratings. But wouldn’t this also be a record for TLC in general?

  20. 6.5 million adults 18-49 is gigantic for anything on cable. We don’t have good historical data on individual cable shows, but my guess is that number hasn’t been exceeded by many non-sports, non-special event cable shows to date.

For comparison, 6.5 million puts you in the broadcast top 20 for 18-49 every week of the regular season, and in the top 10 most weeks.
