US Open Weekend TV Ratings Down Sharply

We’ll get more comprehensive ratings details posted when we see them, but, as expected, the weather, the delays and Tiger’s troubles crushed US Open ratings last weekend.

Sunday’s coverage of the third round and a bit of the fourth generated a preliminary 5.1 overnight rating, down from 8.5 last year.

But comparisons are difficult. Last year, the Sunday coverage of the fourth round from Torrey Pines featured Tiger Woods forcing a playoff with Rocco Mediate; the round extended well into prime time in the Eastern and Central time zones. But this Sunday included an hour of taped coverage that looked back at Torrey Pines while the U.S.G.A. set the pairings for the fourth round.

On Saturday, the rating fell to a 3.7 from a 5.3 last year when NBC’s broadcast went to 10:30 p.m.

The entire article is quite amusing, detailing all the rooting for name stars that went on during the telecast.
