The season 4 premiere of America's Got Talent was more than enough to push NBC to the top of the heap with an average 18-49 demo 2.6 rating for the night. The premiere of ABC's The Superstars was anything but super.

Anchoring the win for NBC, the America's Got Talent premiere demo rating was still down 14% from its season 3 premiere last June. In today's broadcast world though, down 14% is the new up! Limping towards its finish tonight, I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! fell to its lowest rating of the summer.

Going all new last night, ABC was still mired in 4th place. Besides the slow start for Superstars with only a 1.6 demo rating, a new episode of Better Off Ted was completely unwatched (Who will be the first to comment "But it was hardly promoted, I didn't even know it was on!!!!"?), and Primetime: Family Secrets also delivered its lowest original rating ever.

CW's Hitched or Ditched was flat in the 18-34 demo from last week. Fox's Mental was down almost 20% in the 18-49 demo from last week.

Definitions:

*Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

I wonder what ABC was looking for with Better Off Ted. It barely did better than the reruns. And as usual the episode was really funny and no one noticed.

  2. EnBeeSee

Good for NBC’s America’s Got Talent.

  3. Hot Pocket

NBC is so damn glad Got Talent is back b/c everything outside of the Stanley Cup Finals has been abysmal for them. Samething can be said for ABC which is having the worst summer season on record for the alphabet. The decision not to air Superstars behind Wipeout hurt them. Superstars is way better than Wipeout as I love how that model treated TO at the end of the episode after they lost. Great drama there.

As for Ted, why air it anymore? Its done. SS got almost 3 million viewers on a Friday and its already gone.

  4. Steve

    Nice numb3rs for NBC!

  5. OpeningGuy09

America’s Got Talent is the best of the reality competitions. I love that X. I think they should merge the American version with the Britian version next year and combine audiences and interest. That would be an amazing worldwide TV experience.

  6. Hot Pocket, Ted’s been renewed for 2009-10 (although surprisingly to me, and I think a mistake), and they’ve got extra episodes in the can from last season that they seem to want to use in the summer. Not that it will do ABC or the show any good.

  7. GEORGE 11

CW’S HITCH OR DITCHED HAS THE SAME DEMO[18-34] AND ALMOST THE SAME NUMBER OF VIEWERS WITH ABC’S BETTER OF TED.I THINK ITS GOOD NEWS FOR THE CW!!!

  8. Hot Pocket

Bill, I agree the show itself won’t get any new large amount of viewers but people do like it and from what I heard its a quality show worth holding onto but its a nitch show at best.

ABC really has to experiment more with their comedies in both camera types as see if one hits for them. They may have to start over promoting the comedies on their network and get that audience back to their network.

  9. Steve

and why don’t you post UNI numb3rs?

  10. GEORGE 11, MORE LIKE BAD NEWS FOR BETTER OFF TED!!!!

  11. Steve, we decided there just wasn’t the interest (based on comments and traffic) in individual Univision show ratings to post them during the summer.

  12. John

The Superstars is not a bad show, just not really prime-time material. It belongs on a lazy Sunday afternoon in the off season, around two or three in the afternoon.

  13. Vetinari

BoT was great last night. I’m not sure why it doesn’t do better. I think a few ads introducing the characters or actors might help.

  14. Joe R

I have a feeling that wednesday is going to be a fight to win ( America Got Talent and So u think u can dance)

  15. Alex

I’m sure I’ll end up regretting asking this but what is The Superstars?

  16. Anonymous

The Superstars was AWFUL – can’t believe I even wasted time watching that.
AGT was surprisingly good last night, and definitely worth my while IMO. Glad it did so well.

Superstars, on the other hand….wouldn’t be surprised to see it nosedive next week.

  17. Alex, a remake from the 70′s “Wide World of Sports” era, where atheletes/celebrities from various sports compete in “junk” sports events.

  18. gmyers

    9:30 ABC Better Off Ted 0.8 2 0.6 2 1.870

This is just so amazingly bad!!!

  19. Hot Pocket

That’s why ABC needs to open up an afternoon block dedicated to programs like this. They already run Wipeout reruns there.

My favorite part of Superstars was TO and Joanna where she swore at him. She was heated after they lost. TO was like, “I feel sorry for her boyfriend”.

  20. ABC runs Wipeout reruns in the afternoons? Where?
