The Philanthropist did pretty damn well for a summer drama. They almost always tank.

Of course you can’t get a better summer lead-in than America’s Got Talent, so.

I wouldn’t be surprised if for the 2010-11 season NBC aired AGT in the fall, and made some kind of similarly-themed replacement for the summer instead.

Would shows like PSYCH, BURN NOTICE and IN PLAIN SIGHT make it on primetime during the regular year? I enjoy all of these shows, which is to say I see other shows on NBC which I liked go away even though they’ve better numbers. Is the production cost more during the season? I always see people, but a show on USA, TNT it will do fine there.

I’m shocked by ABC in terms of numbers, what is too late in the night? There was plenty of promo coverage. I’m not going to bother and spell the new NBC show, but I’m going to have to check it out now. I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here was AWESOME!! I actually was more hooked as the show went on, unlike what is said up there…I just don’t think audiences truly appreciated and understood the show. Hope they come back with a second season!

NBC should definitely keep AGT in the Summer, at least for now. They don’t want to risk overexposing it. Plus, Simon Cowell probably wouldn’t want it interfering with his other show. In fact, I wouldn’t doubt that it’s part of the deal with NBC that AGT can’t air at the same time as AI. as for The Philanthropist, I DVRed it and plan on watching it soon.

To CP: Well I really think they need to cut Leno sometime. Having him for 5 weeknights in a row per week doesn’t cut it really. People will get sick of him and not watch him, IACGEOHH was show this summer that did the same thing, and look where the ratings went…..down the crapper. I think limiting him to only Tuesdays and Thursdays will do it, and they’ll probably make room for other shows for the other nights, and putting AGT in those nights can work there.

To Holly: NBC can always make shows for the summer, it’s not that bad, I can understand why other networks fail during the summer reruns, but hey that’s what making other summer shows are for.

I think there’s nothing wrong with putting AGT in the fall, it’s just that NBC has to do it next year or the year after that…or otherwise they’ll be kissing 4th or 5th forever.

NBC will be able to ride the wave b/c of the Susan Boyle hype from Britain…already the previews are trying to recapture that in the trailers…so once no American Susan Boyle is found…it will go below “So You Think’s..” numbers…Give it up NBC – you’re not a network any longer…

Uh-oh. I was first this AM by the luck of the draw, and Bill is righter than he even indicated. He has the right to censor anything he damned well pleases. Good enough. Most sites try to be liberal, uh, tolerant because controversy = hits. But I recall they were getting so many worthless political comments just by being expansive in the comments they allowed after the cable news ratings they had to curtail them. I was in a hurry when I ( I think, tangentially) brought up NOT OBAMA, but coverage of Obama. Yet if posts about TV News ratings are verboten because too much political talk is generated, even the intuitively ok may not be so OK. When I went back and looked at the comments after mine and saw four or five political messages in a row, I sort of knew what I would see when I scrolled to the bottom on my homePC and worked my way up. It’s a good and common-sense rule they have. Who wants to wade througha hip-deep swamp of nothing but politics on an entertainment or even infotainment ratings web site, especially one of the few if not the only one I know of with such user-friendly and interesting links?

It’s not inconceivable to me that NBC goes with more reality like AGT during the regular season. Not this season, but a year or two down the road perhaps.

Mark, That can work, or it can completely backfire. If people are watching because they really like the show, then airing during the regular season can expose more people to the show and increase the ratings. If they are watching because there’s nothing else on, it will flop during the regular season. Besides, they have to air something during the summer. Right now, CBS is the only net that can get reasonable numbers with reruns (above a 1.5 for most), reruns on the other nets end up struggling to get a 1.0. The other nets desperately need these summer reality shows because they are low-cost ways of keeping people watching.

I recorded “America’s Got Talent” and watched that after I got back from seeing Transformers 2. It’s a must-see even though its 2.5 hours long. Glad to see Neve Campbell back on TV though.

Wipeout needs to get over 8 million next week for sure. Last year it was going around on average 9 million, no it’s 8 million. Not much of a drop but I’ve noticed a difference in the ratings of last year than this year. Look at the Wikipedia article of the show wipeout and see.

Even tho, I personally enjoy the Listner much better thus far than the Philanthropist…. you have to admit 7.4 mil for a summer show is pretty darn good esp when its up against CSI. NBC is trying harder to give us year round fresh programing than any other network. I for one appluad their effort and appreciate it very much!

Its doesnt bode well for ObamaCare that a repeat of CSI:NY beat by over 60% the ABC Infomercials ratings at 10pm.

As for actually watching it? Why bother, there have been plenty of articles summarizing the different versions of the plan and its massively high price tag. Watching an supposedly independent network promoting the Presidents plan and not allowing competing views or commercials was appalling. The whole thing was semi scripted and orchestrated as these sorts of things always are these days. If I want to watch entertaining propaganda I will watch old Soviet news reels. Which would probably score higher in the ratings.

I figured I would give the Philantropist about two minutes and then flip over to the news. I ended up watching the entire show and it was pretty darn good. It had the feel of a movie, with good writing and smooth editing. It was just on the edge of being over the top but didn’t quite go over. Maybe NBC should’ve saved this show for sweeps???

@Everyone—Look, Bill is right. You come to this website to look for TV numbers and TV ratings and TV information. If you want to discuss the train-wreck that is US Politics then there are plenty of websites that you can do that on. I come on here to read information about television shows. If I want information on flying to Puerto Rico, I’d probably go on a airline website. If I wanted to learn how to build a shed, I would go to a home improvement website. If I want to know anything about politics or discuss politics, I sure as hell am not going to do it on a TV RATINGS WEBSITE! If I was Bill, I would have shut this thread down as soon as the first comment was made. This is not a political rant or a favor of Republican or Democrat, it’s just my opinion for all of those people out there that think they can come on here and discuss politics.

The Philanthropist was amazing! I can’t believe that NBC has been holding this show for so long! This is the best scripted show NBC has put out in a long time. 7 million viewers is huge, especially when during the regular tv season 7 mil is considered lacking and poor. Way to go NBC!

Did any of you actually watch the ABC special? It was overtly negative on the President’s plan! It certainly wasn’t a propaganda piece. Most of the questions he received were pessimistic. The AMA and the CEO of Aetna got to ask questions, for god’s sake, and you can imagine their point of view pretty easily. So shut the hell up if you don’t know what you’re talking about.

And you have a very confused notion of what censorship is. Private entities, like our site, can do whatever they want in terms of what appears or does not appear. We have no obligation to anyone to do anything. Only the government limiting your speech is censorship.

I’m confused. If ABC can show their propaganda infomercial on Obama’s healthcare plan, which is very political, and this is a site to discuss what was on t.v. last night, then why aren’t people allowed to make political comments? Wipeout is doing very well against SYTYCD. I think ABC should put Japanese Game Show on hiatus for one week and fill in a special 1-hr episode of The Superstars after Wipeout. If Superstars gets better retention out of Wipeout, ABC could keep it there and move Japanese Game Show to another night and time.
