Jackson Tribute BET Awards Edges Jon & Kate Plus 8 To Lead Cable Shows

The "break up" episode of Jon & Kate Plus 8 was the top cable show of the year, for all of 6 days, until the Michael Jackson Tribute BET Awards '09 edged it by less than 50,000 viewers on Sunday night with 10.653 million.

Any other non-NFL non-big sports week, the debut of Disney's Princess Protection Program would have easily lead the list, but this week it's 8.533 million viewer average only put it in third place. Following the PPP, Wizards of Waverly Place got a big boost to #7 and 6 million viewers.

WWE Raw on Monday night got a Trump bump, and rose to #4 with 7.298 million. The Closer was almost identical to last week's results with 6.4 million viewers, but that was only good for fifth place this week.

And I think for the first time this season, USA rookie star Royal Pains posted a week to week decline. Still #8 and 5.943 million viewers is nothing to call the doctor about.

Although we don't get HBO numbers with our regular cable data, True Blood's episode this week drew 3.7 million average viewers.

Robert is on hiatus until late July, I am on my own till then, so we will not be handling Twitter (or other) requests for ala carte show numbers.

Dare I ask where the two solid hours of Criminal Intent and In Plain Sight placed outside the top 20.

  2. nickrewind9

Nickelodeon did not make the top 20 this week. :(

What a big week, though. 12 of the 20 spots are more than 5 million viewers.

  3. Tre

Omg! i want the full tv ratings, so i can see how other shows did, like make it or break it

  4. Alex,

since though I’m on vacation I am waiting for a call re: a site related project…

IPS was 26th and Criminal Intent was 23rd and 30th by viewers (they ran back-to-back original eps of CI with the earlier airing being the lower of the two). Hawthorne was (27th) and Tiny and Toya on BET was 25th.

Tre, OMG! And good luck with that :-)

  5. Juan

Correct me if I’m wrong, but this has been the biggest week for Cable ratings this year.

  6. Kara

Wow. You know it’s a crazy week when Burn Notice is all the way down at #12 when it still has over 5 million viewers.

Thanks for the IPS and Criminal Intent numbers!

  7. Julian

Campbell Brown is the queen of Cable News! (as long as someone like Michael Jackson tragically dies)

  8. Josh

Is that record ratings for the BET awards? It seems high.

I love that Cable TV has made it’s mark on people during the summer.

  9. tooltip86

What about viewers for In Plain Sight and Criminal Intent? You guys usually post this numbers before the table of top 20

  10. Mega64

The broadcast networks must be jealous, especially considering it’s the summer season now.

  11. Lanie Grace

Hmmm I can see the return of J&K as “John or Kate Plus 8″ when they come off hiatus.

    (On the set before interview)

Kate: You really don’t need any water right now
Mady: You’re mean, Daddy lets me have water when it his show
Kate: Well Daddy is just after ratings and doesn’t understand
    Mady: Daddy says you’re a bitch….

Can’t wait for this ratings monster to come back on.

Hope that Dollhouse kills it too!

    ~Lanie~

  12. Karen

I see that CI and IPS did okay given that Jackson and BET payed tribute on that night. Does anyone have exact numbers though. Thanks.

  13. rich

loci 2 hours 23 and 30 wow they were great episodes wow

  14. Kara

Karen – in case no one posts the actual numbers I think I can give at least a point of reference:

A press release from TNT stated that Hawthorne got 3.8 million viewers this past week. It came in at #27 – so IPS and the second airing of CI were probably slightly above that and the first airing of CI slightly below. So it looks like both shows did better this week than last week, but still got knocked around a bit by the BET Award/MJ tribute.

  15. JS

    I love Campbell Brown’s show.

  16. Fringefan

    I love Keith Olbermann’s show!

  17. Chrisjozo

I wonder how the wall to wall coverage of Michael Jackson’s death affected the ratings for other Non MJ related Thursday programs.

  18. Hot Pocket

I think the time of cable taking over the broadcasters has arrived. This is the first time in history that 5-8 programs have gotten over 5 million viewers in the same week outside of news telecasts.

  19. Spenda

I’m happy The Closer did so well!
