Fox won another sleepy summer Sunday with its animated repeats. While NBC's Merlin may have found its floor.

Not much interesting last night, it looked just about like last Sunday, except that The Bourne Supremacy did surprisingly well between 10-11p, and ABC repeats did even worse than the Impact mini-series from last week.

You can see TV ratings from other recent Overnight ratings reports here.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

Merlin does not seem that magical, at least not for ratings. Losing to cartoon repeats is a bit sad.

I saw an add for this while watching Wimbledon, and I was not impressed at all. Frankly, having watched the Sci-Fi channel, the ad reminded me of commercials plugging series on that network. If other people have that impression, it’s no wonder no one’s watching. The show struck me as a cheap Harry Potter (which is probably how it was pitched).

  3. NBC sure can’t catch a break with Dramas can they. Although Merlin and The Philanthropist are both AWFUL.

Going into the new season, NBC does have a couple new Dramas coming out. Do we give them a chance, or do we say their dead already.

Family Guy and Simpsons reruns won the night. Family Guy is syndicated at least two places I know of: TBS and Cartoon Network. People here don’t talk about it much, but I think a soild animated show for adults should be on the menu for some of these cable channels trying to catch up with USA. There’s a huge pool of barely tapped talent out there, flexible enough to dilute the sex and violence for Family Hour, or make it nihilistic and raunchy. These guys, if you look them up on the Net, are like the modern Woody Allen- Mel Brooks-Larry Gelbert(?)-Carl Reiner- et al group that cut their teeth in the 1950′s writing for Sid Caesar and others. These modern folks like to use cartoons as their medium and not sitcoms or variety shows. They ARE the future – I’ll bet my reputation as a soothsayer on it, ( penny-ante bet maybe, but there it is.)

I’m not sure if this effected the ratings in a big way, but it should be noted that the repeated Simpsons episode was the 1991 episode Michael Jackson starred in, so that may have attracted some.

The CW Movie almost beat ABC in 18-49 demo @ 9.30pm. CW should repeat Smallville and Supernatural(which i don’t watch) on Sundays. Valentine does awful; Smallville is great! I wonder how those USA movies perform?

    Merlin:
We love this show and it may have a bit of silliness in it, but the energy and spirit of it are great. This a a quality family show and there are not may of them left. This reminds me of the old Wonderful World of Disney that you could count on being a family type show that you can watch together.
My family thoroughly enjoys this and hopes that we can look forward to years of episodes to come. The possibilities are endless. It is like Smallville is for Superman, this is like the mini-Camelot!
Great Job NBC!!! We love it!

I didnt even know The Simpsons Michael Jackson episode was on. it was still set to record on my DVR so i saw it anyway.

  9. Mark

The CW movie was pretty good last night.

What is truly amazing is that a repeat of Password draws 6.7 million viewers. If you watch the show there is no way anyone would win the million dollars because no one is stupid enough to attempt it. And you know how far a contestant will go because the show is only so long and they always have two people that get to participate in lightning round. If you have five minutes left and a person has just won the fifty thousand you know the person is done. Basically what I am saying is CBS must be making a lot of money on this because they don’t give much away (most win the 25 thousand, some the 50) and the repeats are strong. And Regis is probably laughing to the bank.

That Simpsons episode is from eighteen years ago. I remember seeing it new as a kid.

    It didn’t age well.

  12. jake

Why doesn’t ABC use Castle repeats on Sundays after Housewives or on a weekday. This is such a great show and they are showing repeats on Saturdays.

  13. Eric

Merlin was out in Britain over a year ago. how did it do there?

  14. Joey Geraci

Merlin is a very good show. Not the best, but very fun, and certainly the best thing that aired last night by far (helped by the lack of cable shows, but still).

  15. Eric

*** apparently well enough for a second season to be in production right now for BBC One.

  16. @Catherine: If you win the $250,000 level (which allows you to see all the passwords on that level before you risk it), you get a free shot at the $1,000,000 so it is definitely possible for someone to win. But I agree about the timing – that’s why I don’t watch the clock during the show!

At any rate, it’s great that the Password reruns still draw many more overall viewers than the other shows that oppose it – I *really* hope CBS notices that and renews it for a third go-round.

  17. Edie Britt

Valentine isnt a repeat! It was an all new episode.

  18. ROD

I really like MERLIN- i MEAN besides the special effects not being the greatest its a good show-

Very family oriented- People can follow the story and root for Merlin. I see a lot of good acting in it and the story lines aren’t all that ridiculous.

It is a fun show that i gave a chance and i am pretty hooked on it- I think anyone that likes Heroes on NBC and Harry Potter would like Merlin.

Also 2nd isn’t all that bad, and it isn’t too far behind either- I wonder how the show would be if it were an American production with known American actors- i think it would be interesting- Could attract more people because of the name talent. But i feel the show is legit.

Give it a chance- Anything besides a cop drama i get interested in lol i mean every channel has 5 of those already-

  19. T

like eddie said Valentine is a new episode

  20. Cdiddy

And I believe 60 Minutes was a repeat – it was Couric’s interview with the crew of US Airways 1549.
