Our friend Liz Gannes at NewTeeVee has some stats on today's live streaming of the Michael Jackson funeral.

Akamai says via email it had its second-largest day ever of total traffic, after the inauguration. The CDN delivered more than 2,185,000 live and on-demand streams, with more than 2 terabits per second during the service. For the inauguration, Akamai had a peak of 7 million active simultaneous streams, again with more than 2 terabits per second traffic.

Between 12 a.m. and 4 p.m. ET today, CNN.com had 72 million global page views, 10.8 million unique visitors and 8.9 million live video streams, according to Omniture. The site had 781,000 peak concurrent live streams, according to server logs. (By contrast, CNN delivered more than 25 million streams in the 12 hours surrounding the Obama inauguration, with 1.3 million concurrent live streams just before Obama’s address.)

lots more where that came from, including Facebook numbers at NewTeeVee .

Where else was this broadcast online besides CNN. Probably MSNBC or FOX News or maybe even Broadcast Networks like CBS or NBC, right?

How much more million could that add up to?

  3. dollhouse sucks

The real question is, what will they do with Michael Jacksons BRAIN???? Install it in the Elephant Mans skeleton? Or perhaps into a Robot Body? Will they bury his body without his brain to keep him fron coming back as a zombie? Im not buying the excuse that its still needed by the coroners. To record Thriller 2!

I’m surprised that Mj’s Memorial service only came in second to the inauguration. I dont think MJ’s service will be the most watched event in tv history. Princess Diana’s Death actually seemed to get alot more coverage, that was HUGE, an estimated one billion people watched her funeral. I dont think MJ will come close to that

  8. Hialeah-Joe

Ive never heard that one billion for Diana’s funeral but I wouldn’t be surpised either.

Estimates for yesterdays memorial was one billion too, but I expec it to fall slightly short of that.

  9. Only someone of true goodness, greatness, genorousity, kindness, talent and true genius could attrack so many around the world! in such an admired, quiet and respectful way. Michael Jackson touched everyone on this earth with love and music. Hate him or love him more so than not he was a blessing from above. No evil on this earth can take that away. So go ahead all the ones who speak ill of him all you want. MJ doesn’t have to endure it anymore and the people around the world who loved him, well will continue to endure it and ingnore it because nothing can touch this or take away what he gave to us.

Princess Diana’s wedding was watched by 750 million. her funeral 2.5 BILLION and Concert for Diana by 500 million. MJ won`t come close to Diana`s funeral. As news reporters have said MJ`s was watched by millions. Diana was endearing and in 16 years of being famous she got that much. She was buried only a week after her death and got more coverage opposed to MJ who got 12 days. He was famous for over 45 years. She is also the most photographed person in the world being on the covers of every magazine more than anyone else. All in the span of 16 years. It`s not even a comparaison.

Let’s not compare what cannot be compared, this is not the point anyway…
Diana did a lot on the humanitarian level too, but she made no contribution to music or in any other artistic domain. Contrary to what you may think, i loved her very much, I watched her wedding and burial too… What I mean is, you just have to listen to one of Michael’s songs and it was the power to give you energy and good mood for the day, make you forget your troubles for a while.
No other person that ever existed can make such an impact on me and I believe on millions of other people all over the world.
So this is not time for polemics, so just a great artist and an even greater human being.
