Sunday Ratings: Big Brother Slips; Meteor Tops Merlin; And Fox Wins The Night

Due to a golf overrun until 7:12p, Fast Nationals for CBS are approximate.  In the 7p hour, the golf overrun and 60 Minutes posted a 1.0/4.  At 8p, 60 Minutes and the Big Brother Sunday premiere delivered a 2.0/7 (down from Thursday’s debut, 2.3/8), at 9p Big Brother and a repeat Cold Case posted a 1.1/3 and in the 10p hour, repeats of Cold Case and Without a Trace posted a 1.1/3.

Big Brother slipped a bit from its debut, but was by far the strongest new show on Sunday night, while animated repeats helped Fox win the night overall.

NBC's pitiful Merlin fell another tick, down to just a 0.9 adults 18-49 demo rating. The debut of the Meteor mini-series scored only a 1.1 demo rating, poor by any standard, but that was 22% better than Merlin!

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

    I just read an article that the past 3 weeks were the LOWEST rated in the history of broadcast television

    ….now I can see why.

    The fact that a repeat of Family Guy got better numbers than a new BB really says something….is gonna be a longggggggggggggg summerrrrr!

    A couple of Sundays ago, ABC disaster themed mini-series Impact got 4,8 million/1.2 in Part I and 4,4 million/1.1 in Part II.
    Meteor is a bit higher in total viewers, but about the same in the 18-49 demo.
    However the numbers are not much different.

    ABC could order new episodes of Wipeout (probably Couples Edition) for Sundays @ 9:00 if they wanted to. They could also put Primetime: What Would You Do? at 10:00.

    This is kind of off topic but,

    While watching CBS, during each show I see about 4-5 commercials promoting their new fall shows. While watching NBC I see about 1-2 commercials promoting their new shows. However, I have NOT seen one ABC commercial promoting a new fall show except the little 10 second Flash Forward commercial I have seen twice!

    Am I wrong or is there no ABC promo commercials out for their fall shows??

    The 1979 version of Meteor with Sean Connery, Martin Landau, Henry Fonda and Karl Malden was cheesier and more entertaining. With this one, featuring George Costanza standing around Meteor HQ, babbling about nuclear weapons and trajectories, I kept expect Jerry, Elaine and Kramer to show up, with Jerry saying “Hey George, since we are all going to die anyway, let go down to Monk’s for a final meal. ”

    The only good part was when that girl took a fire extinguisher and bashed in the skull of the Mexican rapist cop and then blew away the other deputy. That was totally hard core.

    Forgot about Doc Brown, why doesnt he hop into his DeLorean time machine and use his flux capacitor to go back in time and warn himself that a 2 piece meteor will strike the Earth in 2009?

    Its interesting to see MERLIN fail so terribly on NBC. In Australia, it is quite the hit for Channel 10…

  12. USA Today gave “Meteor” a pretty scathing 1-star review. So I thought to myself, “How bad could it possibly be?” Well, as it turns out, GLARINGLY bad. EMBARRASSINGLY bad. SO bad, in fact, that it made me downright ANGRY that one of the venerable “Big Three” broadcast networks would actually air it … and in this era of Reality TV, that’s really saying something.

    There was absolutely nothing remotely redeeming about “Meteor.” The acting and direction were both about as awful as it gets. The special effects were cheap, and there was absolutely no attempt made at scientific accuracy. Bad enough for you? Well, how about that SCRIPT? According to USA Today, the screenwriter for “Meteor” was one Alex Greenfield, whose last major writing credit was for “WWF Smackdown,” if you can believe that. And BOY, did it show. The script for this film was so laughably, eye-rollingly BAD that for the first time in my life I felt geniunely ashamed of myself for tuning in to watch a TV program.

    What could NBC possibly have been thinking in airing this? My guess is the only thing that mattered was the advertising revenue. Some corporate suit probably said, “It doesn’t matter if the program is bad. What only matters is that we make more money off it than we invested.” Are these the depths to which network television has sunk? If so, and especially if next Sunday’s conclusion to this execrable film draws similar ratings, I see absolutely NO hope for human civilization.

    Marla Sokoloff? The other 99% of the movie was complete garbage. With a decent cast I’m shocked at how horrible it was. I was hoping Jacob Carter had a ship off-camera to escape from that mess.

    Merlin isnt doing that bad for a summer show is it?

    I think there is alot more on tv … better cable shows and more channels to watch.

    Could be a culture thing too … its a british legend americans just not very interested in.

    Well, I’m done with Merlin now that Big Brother is back, and based on the ratings it looks like everyone else felt the same way. How dumb is NBC? Why would they air Merlin opposite the one other show that’s airing new episodes? Why don’t they move Merlin to 9:00? Since everything else was in reruns I just watched Big Brother and shut off the TV afterwards.

    The CW Sunday Night Movie has been over 1 million viewers numerous times.

    Good point. Perhaps ABC is going to use Who Wants to Be a Millionaire to air all of their fall show ads. However, thats only one month of promotion. CBS is by far doing the best job.
