When the cancellation of ABC Family's Kyle XY was announced there was an unusual outpouring of fan antipathy towards ABC Family. Not just the fairly standard "save our show" pleadings that we typically see, but plenty of "ABC Family rot in hell, you will rue the day you cancelled Kyle XY" sorts of comments.
Even the recent reposting of an ABC Family press release on the premiere of their new show 10 Things I Hate About You, brought out the "ABC Family is doomed" commenters, complete with lots of numbers being thrown around about how the network's ratings were headed downwards.
In fact, that couldn't be further from the truth. ABC Family's June 2009 primetime viewership is up in almost every demographic category we see for cable networks vs. their June 2008 ratings.
As they say, reports of ABC Family's death are greatly exaggerated, and it seems like they're doing just fine without Kyle XY.

All cause of Greek. HaHa
This is the kind of post that asks for flaming.
BTW, I love Greek and hope ABC Family keeps it.
LOL, Craig. In terms of the measurements above you could perhaps ascribe a big chunk of the increases Y/Y to The Secret Life of the American Teenager airing a single time this June and not at all last June. It actually aired twice in June this year, but the numbers above are only through 6/28 so would exclude the 6/29 airing.
Also, at least for 2009 numbers, the numbers are not live+SD, but a blend of Live+7 where available and Live+SD where they weren’t.
Did Kyle XY show episodes last June? I’m not a fan of the show, but comparing the changes that occured when a show wasn’t airing doesn’t mean it’s cancellation has any impact on the numbers. Now if the numbers go up compared to last year’s timeslot, then this post makes sense.
Sorry, but Kyle XY did not have new episodes last June.

My goodness Mr. Gorman! What have we (Kyle XY fans) done to make you title an article like that? I understand that you have to keep on the good side of networks to have access to information for articles. That title sounds exactly like something the “spin doctors” at ABC Family would write. It was very nice of you to publish their rhetoric on the internet. Too bad they don’t feel the need to give you something to print along the lines of “We at ABC Family are so sorry for the way we disrespected Kyle XY fans worldwide”. That would be refreshing. But I won’t hold my breath waiting for something like that from ABCF. Hopefully, none of my fellow Kyle XY fans will blast you for the title of this article. Like I said, you probably have to keep on the good side of the networks to have access to information. It’s just part of your job.
So, ABCF had a good month of June? I wonder where those numbers come from? ABCF or Nielsen? Stephen McPherson, head of ABC, stated he believed the Nielsen ratings were “flawed” (his word, not mine). I’m sure some of those numbers are from the big return premiere of Secret Life which is still doing well even with a drop of viewers this season. ABCF premiered some of their new shows directly behind SL which accounted for big premieres for them as well. Of course, that didn’t work so well for Sophie and Roommates and only time will tell about the new shows.
As for the numbers we quote in our comments…..we get them from this site. And we are grateful that you do provide them to us. Please continue to do so.
ABC Family is doing just fine without us? One can only imagine how much BETTER they would be doing WITH us.
Feeling ornery today Bill?
Does look like someone wants to start a fight.
I’m sorry you feel this way. It’s dissapoited that the network canceled the most rated show in it’s history. Not much happy with the shows they replaced. I’m not telling anyone to go to hell or anything in that nature but I’m not happy with the way ABC Family did to our beloved show. I will say that.
This show has brought so much warmhearted entertainment and valuble morals. That’s what family veiwing is all about. Please understand. We just want this show back on the air.
The fact that Kyle XY didn’t have episodes last June does not change the fact that ABC Family is up June/June from last year. The legions of Kyle XY fans (at least the commenters on our site) that hoped to cause ABCF’s demise by abandoning the network presumably have done so, yet their ratings have gone up! Although Robert’s note on Secret Life timing is a possible factor. I also have May and April Y/Y numbers which are post-Kyle XY and will get them up if I have time today.
Holly, indeed I was gone for a few days and suffered through a bad connection/computer and all those Kyle XY comments on the press release caused me to want to put some numbers out there.
Robert is correct on the DVR component of the numbers, I have corrected the legend above.
We get Google alerts every time the show is mentioned on the internet. We can’t help but comment on anything related to a show that we loved so much. I do realize that sometimes information in some of the comments are not accurate but, except for this site, it is hard to find ratings info on the internet that is accurate. It is hard to tell what is true and what is just wishful thinking by us Kyle XY fans. I have seen some wildly exaggerated ratings for many of ABCF shows, including Kyle XY, on the internet. That is why I was so glad to find this site that seemed impartial in their reporting of ratings. I don’t know what has happened that has made you, Mr. Gorman, so angry with us Kyle XY fans. I am sorry if we have seemed rude in our comments. I don’t believe they were aimed at you, just ABCF We are all very passionate about a show that we feel met an untimely and very unsatisfying conclusion. That’s not a bad thing is it? I will take passion over apathy any day.
Kyle XY fans shouldn’t feel singled out. Mr. Gorman takes a dim view of all fans.
We can’t help but comment on anything related to a show…
Really? An obsessive compulsion that affects dozens of people who’s only connection is a TV show?
Hey….maybe show used subliminal messages…
OK, now I’m feeling ornery
Now, here’s a textbook case of creative statistics, lol. I could have saved you the trouble of running the numbers. Kyle XY fans never really watched much on ABC Family other than the show, lol. I haven’t watched anything on that station since Kyle went off the air. Programming didn’t even figure out that showing reruns of Kyle XY would at least keep us in touch with their network.
Kyle XY fans fit the demographics of the “renewed” SciFi (or siffy) network much better. We like Eureka and Warehouse 13 – lighthearted science fiction – as much as we liked Kyle XY.
NBC Universal should start talks with ABC Studios about bringing Kyle XY to SciFi.
Kyle XY fans shouldn’t feel singled out. Mr. Gorman takes a dim view of all fans.
Thanks Sukitawdry. That is good to know.
I was just thrown by previous articles on this site that seemed to support us Kyle XY fans. Maybe they weren’t written by someone else.
OK, now I’m feeling ornery
and when did Holly and Mr. Gorman become an item? lol
Oops. I meant they WERE written by someone else.
Hey Holly, how the heck did you get italics to work here? I obviously don’t know how.
Karen, use <> instead of [ ] on your tags. I will correct your earlier comment.
Just because the numbers at ABC Family are “up” or at least not down does not mean that Kyle XY fans boycotting the channel has NOT had a negative impact. The piece we can not see is what those numbers COULD have been if, for instance, like NYC says, ABCF would have ran at least reruns, or even brought the show back for a “finale” movie. I too, never watched anything on that channel except Kyle XY. I too watch other shows, like Warehouse 13, that are “lighthearted science fiction”. Kyle XY was different. There is not a loyal fan out there that would tell you otherwise. A great show with a terrible ending. A network that doesn’t care one way or another about the actual fan but “cares” about the numbers? Does not make a lot of sense to me.
Clearly those fans cannot take it as well as they dish it. Were they all in that W 9-11 demo?
I still have no idea why ABC Family doesnt cancel Greek. Its numbers are awful, and its dumb. So is Kyle XY, but thats a different story.
