Negative Buzz Nixes 'Gossip Girl'-Themed Product Line?

For a show (and a network) that seems to be built on buzz, here's a bit of negative buzz that might have nixed a Gossip Girl themed product line.

Target’s clothing line by fashion designer Anna Sui is still a go, but the hotly anticipated outfits may no longer be “Gossip Girl”-themed.

“One of Target’s top executives got nervous about being that closely associated with the show, given the [debauchery] its characters get into,” says an on-the-set source. For example, Blake Lively’s character, Serena, killed a man, and most of the characters frequently get wasted, do drugs and have promiscuous sex.

    I can’t say that I blame them.

I honestly enjoyed the first season of Gossip Girl, but the steady drop in quality over the second season has made me think that Josh Schwartz has basically replicated The OC and it’ll burn out either this coming season or partway through the next one (of course, given how weird The CW is, you never can tell). News like this and the word that they have to make major changes since Michelle Trachtenberg is unavailable (due to Mercy getting bumped up in NBC’s schedule) can’t be good. I’m sure that news that one of the main cast members wants to leave can’t be far behind.

what am i watching the same show, the show is pretty tame i think, no one killed anyone most actors are rarely seen doing drugs and show has no more drinking than most teen shows

  4. LOL She didn’t kill a man. She saw some guy overdose on coke.

    Substitute:
“One of Target’s top executives got nervous about being that closely associated with the show..”
    With:
“One of Target’s top executives got nervous about being that closely associated with a show that consistently has such low ratings…”

“Serena, killed a man, and most of the characters frequently get wasted, do drugs and have promiscuous sex”.

Hm, perhaps this a program that I should be watching.

Season 2 of Gossip Girl is horrible!

    Im hating the show!

  8. Its a pretty cool show. But where do you get that Michelle Trachtenberg is a major character?

  9. Why don’t great shows like Mental on Fox and The Philanthropist on NBC get better marketing. During the fall the networks are all over the radio promoting their shows. How do they ever expect these shows to breakout into summer hits that can compete with cable when they treat them like the trash they forgot to dump out. I get that they run spots on their own networks. But what is the point if no one is watching? It wasn’t that long ago that Fox aired a new show in the summer called American Idol. We know what happened with that show. But it was being promoted on the network during the entire May sweeps period. I just don’t get it. If you are not going to try and be the best, why not just shut down for the summer?

  10. One more programming note. Have you guys seen the branding CBS has been doing for the fall? These guys are really working hard at selling the CBS brand. It is no wonder that their shows do so well in reruns. I know the network is for older people. But CBS is clearly out to get every viewer it can. Instead of talking about the end of Network TV, more networks should be looking for ways to kick some butt with their programming. Oh yes, fire any network executive that tells you his network will not be number one! I mean really.

@Jr4092, she’s not a main character, but evidently she had a storyline in the upcoming season that meant she was in a significant number of episodes.

She’s going to be doing both Mercy and Gossip Girl, I post a link but i can’t be bothered!
