The season premiere of Hell's Kitchen returned with lots of confrontation, but just a 3.0  rating in the adults 18-49 demo down from last summer's finale 4.2. That still was enough to lift Fox to the overall win for the night as second place NBC had nothing to back up America's Got Talent's big 9pm hour.

Robert's got some additional thoughts on last night's Hell's Kitchen premiere here (spoilers!).

Comparisons with last week's numbers have to be taken with a grain of salt since Fox had the MLB All-Star Game.

Viewers are still tuning out ABC's The Superstars, as it fell to a 1.0 demo from a 1.2 last week. Better Off Ted was down as well to a 0.7 demo rating from a 1.0. If ABC's objective was to expand the show's reach during the summer it's not working very well because nobody's watching it. Could it even be working against the show's future?

Big Brother was down 0.2 demo ratings points from last week. The finale of Primetime: Family Secrets was down 0.3 ratings points from a week ago. A repeat of Medium came to CBS for the first time, likely to just get CBS viewers used to the concept, and few watched it at just a 1.0 demo rating.

Update: I adjusted some of the numbers in the tables and text. Our sources sometimes round differently and the numbers now are from the more reliable source.

Definitions:

*Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

I could’ve sworn Hell’s Kitchen came on when American Idol did in January. Did they bring it back early this year or do they have more than one contest during the year?

  2. Christian

Yup, this is its second edition in 2009.

It’s gonna be in the 8 PM hour for the rest of the summer, no?

  3. Christian

And no, this is the first time it had 2 seasons in a year.

  4. Christian, that is the planned schedule, with “More to Love” at 9pm.

  5. Bad Robot !

When the final two prepare their meals, dessert should be Angels Food Cake and Devils Food Cake adding whatever they want to it.

  6. gmyers

That Medium came out of NOWHERE!!!!

  7. cool

a 90210 REPEAT was so close of beating Better Off Ted. LOL

When I saw the show running last night, I asked my husband about Medium because he works for a CBS affiliate and he said they were burning off the repeats now on CBS. I watch CBS all the time. It did come out of nowhere. Must have been a quick decision. Did anyone see any ads for it on CBS prior to its showing? I did see one ad for it last night but did not pay close attention. I just thought it was a promotion for the new season. Maybe it wasn’t. Would have been nice for the existing fans to know about it a few days in advance and for the possible new fans too. Unless it was some last minute decision it does seem odd. But nothing networks do these days surprises me. You figure their executives and their promotions people have never watched TV and have no idea how to treat their audience.

Better Off Ted is down again:(
I’m glad 90210 repeats are up because that means in the fall it might start out with a biffer audience.

I HAVE TO SAY! HELLS KITCHEN WAS PROBABLY THE BEST PREMIER I HAVE EVER SEEN! VIEWERSHIP SHOULD INCREASE NEXT WEEK BCUZ ACCORDING TO THE PREVIEWSIT SHOULD BE A GREAT EPISODE! bravo chef ramsey!

    BETTER OFF TED FANS:

ABC is airing the show at 9:30pm ET the next two weeks. With no notice or notification. This is the show’s fourth timeslot.

CBS decided last week that they would air the previous season’s episodes of Medium on Tuesdays to gain viewers and followers. It started with the season premiere from the 5th season. The announcements were made all over the web, most notably on thefutoncritic.com, but I admit, CBS did a poor job of promoting the reairings this summer. At least it is on at a non-conflicting time slot, 10pm, but I fear that Medium will only garner 4-6 million viewers for these episodes.

  13. Steve

Why dont ABC just cut its loses with Better of ted it wont do well in the fall they should just dump it now.

  14. Mark

Steve, BOT isnt coming back til midseason. ABC is hoping ppl will buy/rent season one and watch it and then continue watching the new season.

  15. jason

anyone wanna place a bet that Medium will be a failure on CBS? judging by those rating, thats pretty low. I realize its a reruns but shouldn’t it do better than reruns do on NBC. yet its about the same numbers as it does on NBC. i think the show is a goner.

  16. dan

i tried to watch medium on cbs last night but it just felt different
itll probabley do good on fridays after ghost whisperer like 8 mil probably

  17. Jamie

I just dont understand ABC. They made a HUGE mistake when they renewed Scrubs and Better Off Ted and cancelled Samantha Who?…… Sam has constantly got better ratings than either of these even without ANY hype or advertisement….. Sam just wasnt given much of a chance on ABC and thats a real shame…..

  18. rob

i agree with Jamie. As much as i like Better Off Ted, i would have rather seen Samantha Who? come back. It did get much better ratings but i heard the show was getting too expensive. Better Off Ted must be cheaper.

Actually, ABC shouldve just ended Scrubs like they were going to and put Samantha Who? with Better Off Ted and see what wouldve happened.

  19. DenverDean

I saw the notice for Medium last week. However, it’s weird because CBS is promoting the “new season” on Fridays at 9/8, but they’re showing it at 10/9 on Tuesday. If I were CBS, I’d flip Flashpoint and Medium now, so that people get in routine of Friday. It’s not like they are running new eps of FP.

  20. On a ratings basis (which correlates to current revenue), all three: Better Off Ted, Scrubs and Samantha Who? should have been canceled.

That SW? was canceled and the other two renewed speaks either to cost (SW? more expensive, the other two cheap) or future revenue potential (Scrubs increasing its value in an already assured syndication sale, where SW? was still too many episodes short of syndication) or both.
