A Katie Holmes boosted So You Think You Can Dance lead Fox to the nightly win in adults 18-49, but a surprising Univision captured second in 18-49 and first in 18-34. The finales of Samantha Who? on ABC and The Listener on NBC were barely watched.

At 8pm, Big Brother was up a tenth in the adults 18-49 demo from last week, while the finale(s) of Samantha Who? drew but a 0.9 adults 18-49 demo rating, not even as much as the JK Rowling special last week. For the record, ratings would have indicated that SW?, Scrubs and Better Off Ted all should have been shown the door last season.

So You Think You Can Dance picked up a nice boost to a 2.9 demo rating, up from last week's 2.5. The competition was effectively the same, so perhaps the dancing is getting more interesting. Ah, the show featured Katie Holmes, that's the ticket.

At 10pm, the last episode of The Listener to air on NBC (although it will live on in other countries), managed only a 1.0 demo rating.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

well did anyone really expect Samantha Who to do any better? No promotion that there was a finale. The Listener was promoted better and only got 0.1 higher than Samantha Who and Samantha Who got more viewers and beat the Listener in 18-34 rating.

ABC cant just cancel everything just because they cant get high ratings. Shows need a chance!

  2. Steve

    RIP Samantha who?

  3. forg

I feel sad for Samantha Who, it had a strong start, ratings wise, then it just couldn’t hold the ratings it had when it had the post-DWTS slot.

Christina Applegate promoted the series finale a lot on her Twitter. It was nice to see how she loved this show so much. Too bad it didn’t last that long.

  4. rob

ABC killed Samantha Who when putting it after that new show In The Motherhood which was absolutely horrible! Samantha Who shouldve been on 1st then In the Motherhood. ABC screwed it up like they screw up all their other shows.

  5. rob, or you could say that you could say that after ABC moved Samantha Who? away from the post “Dancing With The Stars” slot it couldn’t stand on its own, even after two years. It all depends on your perspective.

samantha who was an ok sitcom nothing special but better than the likes of the renewed til death

  7. forg

Plus the competition on a Thursday was just too stiff for SW to handle. Wow, I just realized that only ‘Private Practice’ survived among the ABC 2007-2008 new shows batch.
I like Better Off Ted but I’m half-expecting that it would only have a short second season, but who knows there could be a miracle :D

Sometimes I think what would have happened if the Writers’ Strike didn’t interrupt the 2007-2008 TV season because pre-strike the ABC Wednesday line up of Pushing Daisies, Private Practice and Dirty Sexy Money did well. The writers’ strike killed the momentum :( Anyway, I know its pointless to think about that anymore

Samantha Who would have blended well with the upcoming sitcoms of ABC (The Middle, Modern Family and Cougar Town). Although ABC canceled four of my favorite shows last season, I will still look forward to their new shows for the Fall season because they have an interesting line up especially the comedies. I hope they will live to their potential and get enough viewers to last. ABC needs to produce a hit again or at least have a stable show like Brothers and Sisters

  9. I think this season is a crucial one for ABC. They’ve done relatively poorly over the past 2 years and their hit scripted shows (Grey’s, Housewives, Lost) are weakening with little on the bench at the moment. If they generate a few hits, they could be back in the hunt with Fox and CBS. If not, they’re battling NBC for third (or last, depending on how you look at it).

  10. Catherine

Poor Katie Holmes. Such a big build up and we got taped lip synching and minimal dancing. What were they thinking? She looked so nervous during the “interview” with Cat. Made me think of the part of “Citizen Kane” where Kane forces his second wife who is good singer to become an opera singer and to perform live in a concert hall. In over her head.

    Hope the charity does well.

Ratings for SYTYCD should be up next week and the week after since those are the final weeks.

Mentalist is doing well in its new spot. With Sarah’s return to CSI (occasional though that may be) CSI’s ratings should go up a bit next season. (Oh please, William Petersen, come back for a few episodes too, please.)

BB was up but with you know who as the new Head of Household I’m not sure of this coming week’s ratings.

  11. forg

Yes, this is a very crucial season for them. Even Dancing With the Stars is already showing decline. I’m really rooting for a lot of new ABC shows, I hope they could find a hit again.

  12. Chris

Of course Samantha Who? couldn’t stand on it’s own after they moved it. ABC screwed the pooch by keeping it off air for months on end for no good reason. Pairing it with ITM only made matters worse. ABC killed it themselves, don’t blame the viewers for never knowing when it was on. They can’t tune in if they have no idea when it will be shown!

  13. ABCHasProblems

Remember that Samantha Who was originally scheduled for 9:30 after The Bachelor last winter; ABC doomed the show by moving it away from Mondays altogether. On the other hand, I thought it was amazing how Wipeout was falsely promoted by ABC (at 8/7c) and not mentioned during Wednesday’s press conference, yet maintained decent ratings at 9:00 this past Wednesday. If Wipeout can survive the heavy competiton at 9:00 on summer Wednesdays, it can survive in the regular season. With that said, could Samantha Who have received better ratings if put after Wipeout? It’s not a niche show like The Goode Family.

  14. Marc

I hope that keeping a show like Better off Ted through the summer has a positive effect on its oucome come January.

I am pretty sure when the new fall shows come out, we will hear things like “Better of Ted is better than that show”, and that will generate BUZZ around the show.

If you judge renewing shows based on summer number’s, NETWORKS are CRAZY.

The reason shows like big brother and wipeout do better is because if you miss an episode, no big deal.

Bill: I don’t think it relates to Thursday, but what is the prediction on “mental” and “philonthropist”?
Don’t pilot a show in the summer and expect it to make it….

  15. Shem

I saw an NBC promo saying that the Listener will be back next Thursday.

  16. Shem, The Listener’s not on NBC’s web schedule, and I haven’t seen any press release announcing yet another change. Perhaps someone put the wrong ad into the feed?

  17. Marc, predicting summer series is even trickier than regular season shows, but I wouldn’t expect to see either of those shows again.

  18. T

im curious as to how Defying Gravity will done on ABC it looks like it could potentially be their new big summer show

  19. ABCHasProblems

I think Gravity will fail and get about a 1.6 A18-49 rating. I doubt ABC will renew it, unless it does very well. They should air it on Thursdays @ 10 after GA repeats.

  20. Doug

ABC is fairly well known for being unable to sustain prosperity. If you look at the last 15 years, in 93/94 they were 1st on the back of their family sitcoms, but fell to 3rd by 98/99 because they failed to develop anything new. The Millionaire came along and they shot to first again, sliding down to 4th (I think) by 2003/2004 because they failed to develop anything new. 2004/2005 shot them back to the top (in demos) with Lost, GA, DH and DWTS, but once again, they’ve failed to develop anything new.

CBS has been really good and continually developing watched series, and NBC was, until Friends went off the air and they went bust.
