Both the series finale of NBC's Kings* and another new episode of ABC's Dirty Sexy Money aired to nearly identically tiny audiences, and were the two lowest rated shows of the night, as Fox reality crime won again.

Definitions:
Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.
Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.
Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)
Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

Didn’t like the way they ended Kings. Too bad, should of had closure since we know there’s no chance it’s coming back, unless Cable picks it up…but I doubt it.
Bill,
You STOLE my comment!
~Lanie~
Kings would never be picked up by cable.
It’s too expensive…even for broadcast.
“Dirty” was so good when it started but it appears all the original writers must have all ben fired and children were brought in to write the rest of the episodes. The last 2 airings were some of the worst shows on record.
plus it doesn’t have the buzz or numbers to warrant a pickup by cable
USA original scripted shows gets much better ratings than kings has
Kings finale wasnt so good i hate this week Valentine,Samantha Who? and Kings all gone now and i recently lost Harper’s Island too now True Blood (and sorta Big Brother) are the only shows i watch currently airing Valentine and Samantha’s finales were much better than Kings though.. they need to remake Valentine soon
Why couldn’t the idiot American public recognize the genius of this groundbreaking show!
The Kings finale was shot long before the show was officially axed; as such, it was a fantastic ending. The cost of filming it can be reduced so long as the story line and actors remain. Proper marketing would also raise ratings and, as a result, commercial revenue.
NBC should be partially happy viewers actually showed up to watch Criminal Intent and then got more viewers for SVU. I didn’t even know Criminal Intent was going to be on but when I checked listings and I saw Jeff Goldblum was in this one I watched. Had missed this on whatever Sunday it was on.
I know there are other people like me who have a hard time keeping up with what shows are on when AND I actually check TV Guide and the newspaper supplement and the Internet listings. It has got to be how a number of good but not promoted shows get lost in the shuffle. Think of how often USA promotes its shows in a day.
On the other hand, which I thought was slightly odd, NBC was promoting Days of Our Lives during Criminal Intent. Good for them but was the soap demo watching Criminal Intent?
Kinda sad seeing all of the BIG networks loose to FOX. Specifically ABC and CBS becasue 1, ABC came in 2nd place for the 8 O’clock hour, and then for the next two hours, it loose there viewers. Still good seeing CBS coming in 2nd place.
Good riddance Kings. I was hoping that it would have scored an even lower share but what it got is fine enough, seeing that the show was a huge mess from the beginning.
I can’t say that I’m a fan of Kings–I’ve never even caught a single episode–but all of the mwa-ha-ha-ing over its miniscule ratings is a little depressing considering that when a pricy and ambitious hour long scripted show that operates outside of the Procedural-Lawyer/Doctor soap opera box tanks, it only results in cheaper, more milquetoasty and less ambitious programming across the board.
Hehe, nasty used of picture material *g*
too bad about kings. after watching the finale i realized that i just saw one of the greatest shows in our generation.
“Why couldn’t the idiot American public recognize the genius of this groundbreaking show!”
–you know, when you keep on rubbing in fans’ faces the twisted glee you get from seeing how poorly a show did it just makes us try to keep on annoying you (but intentionally now)… seriously though, just because you don’t like a show and you’re a little tired of reading the same comments doesn’t mean that you have to be like that. I partly agree with greenogo though; there’s a high chance that Kings’ cancellation will result in crappy reality shows.
alexandra, less twisted glee than trying to reduce, even by just a little, the exact same comments that get made each week (as you correctly identified!). Robert would likely mock *me* for even trying!
And those comments that I parodied are in fact just a restatement of “Hey, Kings is a smart person’s show. I like it. I am a smart person. The fact that few other people like it must mean that everyone else is stupid, not that I could like an unpopular show!”
Sad to see Kings go.
I don’t where to start about “Kings”. I loved the show but like “Life On Mars” U.S. version, “Swingtown” last year, and Kevin Harvick’s Sprint Cup season, all was jinxed.
I really felt the best episodes were the final three and the first two. If they all ran together, the show would have had a better chance. I wish somehow it could have a cable run but they better do it quick. I heard some story (possibly internet rumor) that Ian McShane might take the roll of Robert McCall in a modern version of The Equalizer.
Like someone earlier mentioned, the shows were filmed long ago believing that it would have a second season. Instead, that cliffhanger may never have a season premiere. From a facebook page, it sounds like it might have a foreign following. Hey, if Doctor Who (British made) is as big as ever how about Kings being made by some foreign network (BBC,CBC,etc.) and picked up later by some American cable system? We Americans don’t hold a monopoly on television shows made in the world. I could see the BBC taking this show over and do it well with some necessary tweaks. Wonder if that happened PBS would pick it up?
Wishful thinking on my part. I feel for “Kings” as my wife did last year for “Swingtown”. That show did okay in the ratings until getting killed by the Olympics. Hmmn…. if I had a network.. Swingtown-Life On Mars-Kings. I’ll take a night like that. I need to win a couple lotteries or federal bailout for that to happen.
As I wish this show had a longer run and overall it needed another year at least. Just remember that Cheers and Dallas had bad starts. Gee what ever happened to those shows? I think Ian needed an Emmy nomination as well as Jason O’Mara of LOM.
Enough of my babble, just bummed about Kings being over. Anybody know when the DVD comes out? Love to find a Kings flag and t-shirt.
William, Kings, the complete series will be out Sept 29th.
kings needs a season 2 we all need a closure
