Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

Surviving Suburbia was not a repeat.

WOW!!!LOOK AT THE GAME!!!1.43 FOR A CW SUMMER REPEATOF A CANCELLED SHOW ITS GREAT!!!!WHY CW DIDNT RENEW IT TO PUT IT AFTER SMALLVILLE.I THINK AFTER SMALLVILLE TH EGAME WOULD HAVE SOME INCREASE IN ITS RATINGS.MAYBE MORE THAN 2 MILL. VIEW.WHY CBS DIDNT PUSHED DAWN OSTROFF TO RENEW THE SERIES!!!THE GAME JUST NEEDED 1 SEASON TO GET ENOUGH EPISODES FOR SYNDICATION.(ABC RENEW SCRUBS FOR THAT REASON)!!AND CBS WILL EARN A LOT OF MONEY SELLING THE SERIES TO THE LOCAL STASIONS!!
SO DAWN IS REALLY POWERFULL IN THE CW AND CBS(& WB) REALLY TRUST HER!!OMG HOW SAD!!!

  3. Holly

I haven’t been paying attention to the Friday posts, but… Have repeats of According To Jim always been beating the new episodes of Surviving Suburbia and Goode Family? Talk about sad!

  4. Catherine

Dateline was Michael Jackson for a good part of it. Basically rehashing the new material that was on Today and the other “news” outlets all week. It seemed designed to sum up the rumor and innuendo and every tadry detail.

I was channel surfing a lot last night. Two cable networks with Lethal Weapon movies! When I would go past NBC they were overanalyzing (in that shocked, patronizing way the whole thing has been handled) another rumor about Michael, and yes, it was a good part of the two hours. Thank goodness Monk and Psych are back next Friday. Finally something to watch.

  5. rob

The final episodes of Surviving Suburbia and The Goode Family are on next Friday.

Im sure ABC is happy to get rid of these shows.

  6. domagy

this is the right title “Two hours of Dateline AND Southland lead NBC to victory”, ’cause Southland did great! 3.88/0.8 is great!

  7. Holly, I haven’t followed so closely myself, but in recent history ATJ reruns have regularly bested Goode Family across the board, and been either just ahead of or just behind Surviving Suburbia in the demo, and generally a bit behind Suburbia in viewers.

domagy — uh, no, Southland didn’t even win its time slot.

  8. Tdot

    Southland is unwatchable

LOL @ Southland – it’s gonna bomb on Friday…no way the Friday TV crowd is going to watch a show like that!

And all things considered, More to Love did pretty well…a 1 demo ain’t too shabby for a repeat on Friday.

  10. e. carson

I noticed the ratings for Goode Family notched up a bit. Do you think ABC will take notice and order more?

  11. Anonymous

Carson, I’ve heard rumours from very credible sources that ABC is absolutely thrilled with TGF’s performance and may order 90 new episodes – then make a KILLING in the syndication market.

  12. huddy80

@TDot & other Southland nay-sayers: Southland is unwatchable? Have you seen the entire season, or are you basing this on the pilot episode? Southland is a cutting-edge, riveting drama that keeps you on the edge of your seat. It should fare pretty well this summer in the timeslot it has, especially in its 8pm timeslot. This fall, I also believe it should fare pretty well because between Ugly Betty, Dollhouse and Medium, Southland is fresh and has the ability to become a great show. If NBC was truly smart, they would move Southland to Wednesdays at 8 and move newcomer Mercy to Fridays at 8 and put Law & Order at 9.

  13. Holly

huddy, Southland couldn’t get 7 million/ 2.0 on Thursday following NBC’s comedies, how do you expect it to beat Medium when it’s moved to Fridays? My guess is Medium will lead by a good margin, then Betty and Southland will come out about even (I’d give the slight edge to Betty because it will be hammocked between two shows that have performed well on Fridays whereas Southland is between L&O, which has been struggling, and Leno….). Dollhouse will probably maintain last season’s 4th place.

  14. Jamie

George, Scrubs wasnt has long ago finished enough episodes for syndication….. I have no idea why in the world ABC renenwed it this year. I think they were just intruiged by the new format. maybe?

  15. Jamie

and Holly, I ask, have you wathched Southland more than 2 full episodes or is this more of your normal anti nbc fare? :) Southland will crush the dying shows of ABC and CBS.

  16. Doug

Those ratings are actually not too too bad for Southland. Didn’t it eventually fall to under 5 million for new episodes on Thursday? 3.88 and a 0.8 for a 8pm summer repeat on Friday is not a disaster.

    For the fall, I would assume: Medium (9-10 million, 2 to 2.3 demo), UB (6 to 7 million, 1.7-1.8), Southland (5-6, 1.4-1.6) and Dollhouse (4-4.5, 1-1.2).

  17. Holly

My statement had nothing to do with the quality of the show, only the ratings. Southland started out well but had fallen below a 2.0 by the end of its seven episodes. I can’t really see it not dropping a few tenths with a move to Friday. On the other hand, if Medium will likely get at least a 2.0 and if it can’t maintain at least a 1.9, it will be replaced with Flashpoint which will.

  18. Holly

If it makes you feel better, I think L&O could be close to GW for the 8:00 hour.

  19. greennogo

Southland’s biggest worry isn’t Medium crossover–I think Southland will take a substantial ratings hit with the Law and Order move as a lead in. Considering that NBC and ABC have stereotypically branded that 8pm Friday hour with ‘middle-aged housewife’ reality friendly fare like “Wife Swap”, or comedies of different shapes and sizes, L & O classic will have to cope with being positioned radically out of context. SVU could draw in audiences anywhere because right now it’s the premier brand of the franchise, but the original L & O–which actually has become more ‘The Shield’ like in terms of style and production value–is a midweek 9pm lead in, or a 10pm show. At 8 however, on a Friday where those 18-49 males are at their most diffuse, it’s like an atheist stranded in Vatican City, so if Southland expects to improve with a lead in doing the same 2.0 it was doing at it’s best, I’ve got a bridge I can sell ya.

Doug, I’m not too sure that Dollhouse can pull 4.5 million hour of broadcast viewers, but if it does, that’ll qualify as much higher than 1.2 in the demo–especially considering that the number of actual viewers over the age of 54 can probably be counted on a gangrenous man’s fingers and toes.

“I have no idea why in the world ABC renenwed it this year. ”

    –Still for syndication reasons/$$$.
