Psych, Monk and Pushing Daisies lead TV Show DVD sales

Quite a week, lots of new shows released on DVD in the newest list.  Mad Men, which led all TV shows for the week ending July 19, was pushed off the charts we see (top 30) by the week ending July 26.  Perhaps it will make a comeback next week.

Phenomenal seller True Blood marks its first week off the chart since it was released, though we can see that it sold around an additional 12,000 units. A very impressive run that's pushing $41 million in revenue.

Psych - The Complete Third Season and Monk - Season Seven led all TV show DVD sales for the week ending July 26, followed by Pushing Daisies: The Complete Second Season (per RJ in the comments, Pushing Daisies 52,514 units for season two was up from the first week sales of PD: Season 2 is up from the 45,769 Season 1 in its first week), but with the kind of numbers that make it seem unlikely they will be hanging around on the list for long.   Mad Men sold over 94,000 units the previous week -- more than any show on the list this week -- and now its off the list.   Also on this week's list were Prison Break - The Final Break, SpongeBob Squarepants and Robot Chicken -- Star Wars Episode II.

Like True Blood Weeds, Entourage, Stargate Atlantis and 24 also fell off the list.

Next week, it's the apocalypse!  We'll see the results for the week ending August 2, which will include...Dollhouse!

Coincidentally, to celebrate their return to TV this Friday, we are having contests that include giving away this week's top TV show DVD sellers, Monk and Psych.

11,800 units. Quite a drop, it will be interesting to see if TB stays down by 10k next week. Perhaps the demand is finally colling off.

    48 24 – Season Seven 544,019 $17,755,080 5/19/2009

About to drop off the top list and out of sight.

  2. Waitig for JBF to tell us how many DVDs of Dollhouse he bought and passed out to pedestrians on street corners.

  3. RJ

Nice to see Pushing Daisies on the list.

  4. RJ

Just looked, PD: Season 2 is up from the 47,674 Units Sold for PD: Season 1 in its first week.

  5. Drew — eleventy billion, duh! ;-)

RJ, good info on PD, I’ll include it in the post..

That’s a 50 percent increase for Monk over the first-week sales of season six. Though it’s obviously more about ratings than DVD sales for Monk – which is actually a little odd, because it’s as easy to jump into as a show could possibly be, you can pick up any season and instantly have fun watching it.

It’s a shame Tony Shaloub is getting tired of making it, nobody’s getting tired of watching it.

  7. JanieJones

I think Tony Shaloub and co. are smart to end the series. I am very sad to see the end of the show but it’s time for all to move on within the series. I feel lucky to have watched this show since the beginning. I hear many people complain about the show still being on but just looking at the DVD sales shows me that there is still a great deal of interest in Monk. I’m looking forward to what will be a bittersweet final season.

  8. officegurl

I think I have to totally reverse course and agree with you, Janie. As soon as I posted my last post I thought, you know, a lot of shows could learn something from Monk, they’ve done a bunch of great seasons and Tony Shalhoub is a great enough actor and Andy Breckman is a great enough comedy writer that they can be confident they’ll do something else good down the road.

All the more reason to buy the DVD of this beautifully-done series.

  9. Bryan

Im looking forward to see how many Dollhouse DVDs / Blue-Rays are sold. At leat Dollhosue has to be on the list.

  10. RJ

Robert, I apologize, it was actually 45,769. I guess the numbers must have changed because I saved it in a document, but I rechecked the site, and it changed.

  11. RJ, no worries –they made a lot of revisions lately (where everything was revised a bit down). I’ve corrected the number in the post.

  12. Steve

Does anyone know what Special Features are on the PD season 2 boxset? any commentaries, Deleted scenes and a GAG reel? Ill buy it if it has good extras.

Yay for Pushing Daisies selling well. :)

  15. AO

    Good for PD!

I want to buy it (and S1 too) but am concerned that as soon as I do then they will release a Super Duper Deluxe Complete Series Collection with so many great bonuses that I will feel compelled to buy that as well.

  16. AO

    DOLLHOUSE!

    DOLLHOUSE!!

Btw, Fox sold 2500 DVD’s and 2500 BR’s at ComicCon, would those sales be reflected in next week’s sales charts?

  17. RJ

“they will release a Super Duper Deluxe Complete Series Collection with so many great bonuses that I will feel compelled to buy that as well.”

I doubt they will. Only 22 episodes? Eh.

  18. SgtSharki

I never liked PD. And people need to stop blaming ABC for that shows failure. The network promoted the hell out of that show when it debuted and it paid off, PD was the most watched new series that year. Despite its strong start viewership started to decline right away and by the end of it’s first season it had gone from number 14 to number 54.

With that kind of decline I really don’t see what ABC could have done to save the show. It may be hard for fans to believe but most viewers just weren’t that into the show.

  19. aboleyn24

I loved Pushing Daisies and I agree 100% that ABC heavily promoted the show. They are not to blame in the least for its failure. It really was one of those love it or hate shows. Do I wish more people had liked it, sure I do but tastes vary and not everyone wanted a delicious slice of pie.

  20. forg

I agree I love Pushing Daises but I don’t blame ABC for canceling it, that’s how the business goes. But yes the show ratings declined from the pilot until the last few episodes of season but it was still winning on its timeslot though but the writers’ strike killed the show’s momentum. But oh well its over and I’m just glad it had closure at least on the last episode.
