Scoreboard NBC CBS FOX ABC Uni CW
Adults 18-49: Rating/Share 2.4/7 1.7/5 1.5/5 1.4/4 0.6/2 0.3/1
Adults 18-34: Rating/Share 2.0/6 1.3/4 1.7/6 0.8/3 0.7/2 0.2/1
Total Viewers (million) 7.09 6.71 3.24 4.96 1.40 1.00

Update 9:10AM PDT: forgot to include the premiere of There Goes the Neighborhood at 9pm on CBS.  It averaged 5.08 million viewers and a 1.6/4 rating/share with adults 18-49.

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire returned to the prime-time airwaves for the first time in 5 years, and to celebrate its 10 year anniversary with the first of 11 episodes over the next two weeks.   I thought Millionaire would do better, but I thought wrong.  Millionaire averaged 6.988 million and a 1.6/5 (rating/share) with adults 18-49.   Big Brother averaged 7.20 million and a 2.5/8 with adults 18-49.

But NBC won the night overall with a repeat hour of Dateline and Sunday Night Football exhibition game featuring the Buffalo Bills and Tennessee Titans.  In the 8pm hour, against Millionaire and Big Brother, the game averaged 8.12 million viewers and a 2.9/8 with adults 18-49.  For the prime-time portion (8p-11p) the game averaged a 2.7/8 with adults 18-49. As always, the data is preliminary and live events are especially subject to change.

The debut of ABC's Shark Tank kind of tanked.  Tank averaged 4.23 million at 9pm and a 1.3/4 with adults 18-49.

Meanwhile ABC's Defying Gravity slipped further into obscurity averaging a mere 2.805 million and a 1.0/3 with adults 18-49 at 10pm.

I'll try to work in the rest of the show data below later, check back... You can see the half hourly detail for the night via Marc Berman.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

i think millionaire will grow as the week progresses… maybe not but i forgot about it and i’ll tivo the rest so they will have at least 1 more viewer.

  2. RJ

    Wow. Millionaire bombed.

    Aw… That’s a shame for Millionaire.

I watched last night’s episode and it brought back a lot of great memories… Hopefully the ratings will improve as the week goes on.

Not too surprised about “Shark Tank…” it looked too familiar to “American Inventor” fro
    a few years back.

  5. RJ, I’ve seen the numbers from two different data sources. I think James just got it wrong and transposed some data. I’ll forgive him that after three weeks of comic con and TCA coverage which I’m sure is a grind.

Or BOTH my data sources are wrong (unlikely, but, perhaps possible)

  6. I knew it, there just wasn’t anything special about Millionaire last night since it was basically exactly the same as the daytime version. The celebrities they have lined up aren’t that good either and they didn’t even put the damn show in HD!! C’mon! I guess ABC can blame it on the football game, but we’ll see tomorrow.

And both Shark Tank and There Goes the Neighborhood were awful shows. I wonder if they’ll replace Shark Tank in the fall schedule immediately or pull it after one episode.

  7. RJ

Ok, thanks for clearing that up Robert. If you have two sources, then you must be right. :)

Millionaire and Shark Tank didnt do that bad for a premiere on a Sunday in the summer. Millionaires audience will definitely grow thoughout the week. Plus there was a stupid football game on which also affected their ratings.

I mean if it premiered 7.5 million viewers 10 years ago, then getting almost 7 million viewers on a Sunday isnt bad.

  9. Nick V

What a shame. I really, really liked Shark Tank too. I assume this doesn’t bode well for its future. And I expected way more from Millionaire. Very surprised. I think one thing we can glean from this is that CBS will definitely be keeping Big Brother around for a long time.

  10. Joe

The lack of a HD broadcast for Millionaire is stupid and almost inexcusable in this day and age. Even the daytime version is in HD, I believe. Regis is still a better host than Viera though.

  11. HD snobs unite! But I’m in complete agreement. I was surprised Millionaire wasn’t in HD, and wanted to change the channel because of it…

  12. rob

i wish it was in HD. Its not ABCs fault that it wasnt in HD.

  13. Chief

No HD plus the exact same rules as the daytime version led me to change the channel over to football very quickly.

  14. rob? OF COURSE it’s ABC’s fault it wasn’t in HD.

  15. What a shame about Defying Gravity, ABC does a SCIFI show, denies it is SCIFI calling it a drama and then it is just terrible. I will keep an episode on one of my DVRs to play when I need to take a nap or go to sleep at night. My question is how could something this dead and slow ever get put on the schedule? Can’t believe how bad it is? The hokey mystery force must be what they were expecting to carry the show. I will give it another chance next week because I do support my genre even when it is difficult to watch.

Thanks for the good work you do on this site.

  16. Master Moron

I’m glad that Shark Tank failed. I wanted to punch the judges. I can’t believe they actually promoted the fact that one of the judge’s made those Obama coins. That’s right, those quarters with Obama stickers over them. ABC decided it was a good idea to put that scam artist on this show? What were they thinking?

And they advertise on their website that the female judge got straight Ds in high school in college. And the contestants are supposed to kiss these people’s asses?

The bald guy was the worst. Everything he said made me want to punch him. What a piece of garbage. Does ABC really think that in this economy we want to see rich pieces of garbage steal money from people? Oh yeah, and the production gets 5% regardless of whether the contestants take the judges’ offers. This show is disgusting.

  17. ABCHasProblems

Millionaire was really good last night, despite many similarities to the daytime show. They had a guy who got laid off and won $1K, a college kid who works 3 jobs and won $25K, a man who waited 10 years to be on the show, and Katy Perry. Katy Perry was hilarious and knew the answer to her question, but decided to use her Phone-A-Friend anyway! I really hope Millionaire’s audience improves over the next 10 episodes. There’s just something about the primetime show that makes it more entertaining than the daytime show.

  18. On second thought glad Defying Gravity is called a DRAMA and not Science Fiction, it would give the genre a bad name!

  19. CP

Master Moron, I agree with you completely about the bald guy. How greedy is this guy? He has BILLIONS of dollars, yet he wants over 50% of everyone’s companies? Give me a break. They guy on the far right that was talking back to him was my favorite. I really like this show, I hope it stays around for its full run.

  20. John

    Football is America’s game.

I love Regis but do we really want to see him in HD?
