warehouse 13

Earlier today when posting the ratings for last night's episode I remarked that the interest in the Warehouse 13's ratings surprised me given that it seemed a complete lock to be renewed

I haven't seen an official press release yet (probably because it hasn't been issued yet!), but  now Variety is  reporting that Syfy has picked up the show for a second season of 13 episodes. Very interesting about the 50-50 gender mix:

Unlike other Syfy series, "Warehouse 13" has a near 50% female viewership and is performing better in its first season than the first season of "Battlestar Galactica," which ended its four-season run in March.

Thirteen episodes have been ordered for season two and, as with "Battlestar," that number could go up in subsequent seasons.

"We took a look at doing 20 episodes, but for logistic and financial reasons, it didn't make sense to do that right now, but I wouldn't rule it out," Syfy president Dave Howe told Daily Variety.

Heh. I just posted the Variety link in the “Warehouse” ratings article about ten minutes ago, figuring it was overlooked. I should of known better.

“Very interesting about the 50-50 gender mix:”

I was shocked. Extremely shocked. I wouldn’t of figured a 50-50 audience was possible for anything on SyFy.

The folks in charge of the rebranding must be happy.

“See, we said SCI-FI screamed ‘sausagefest’, but Syfy screams ‘hellooooo ladies’”

  3. Hopefully they will get 20 episodes if the ratings stay steady. I still can’t believe how successful the name change was.

  4. Cimmer

So why only renew it for 13 eps and ‘financial reasons’? Huh? I don’t understand its popularity myself even though I’m female LOL but at least Syfy is trying. Perhaps they were expecting more viewers or want to see how it does once summer’s over? They jumped ahead with a full season when they renewed Eureka didn’t they. Weird.

Maybe SyFy just wants to take a cautious approach and see how the rest of the season plays out. Committing to produce 20 episodes takes alot of time and money. Plus, if they produce 20 episodes, they would most likely have to split the season like they did with Battlestar and Eureka and the show might take a ratings hit airing in the winter.

@Cimmer: SyFy seems to have adopted the “13 episode season” that most other cable channels now use. At least for it’s “light hearted sci-fi”. Eureka for example was 13 hours per season in it’s first 2 seasons and was only extended to more in the 3rd season to make up for cost over runs due to the Writer’s Strike (and then they split that by turning the second half of season 3 into a defacto season 4 by holding onto it for a year)

Oddly the network seems to want to stick with 20 episode seasons for the Battlestar Universe (Caprica was picked up for 20 episodes).

  7. Tom

Actually, I just remembered that Eureka Season 4 was picked up for 22 episodes so I guess it’s just a case of SyFy being obnoxiously confusing.

  8. Cimmer

@Tom, yeah I thought I read that Eureka had been picked up for 20 + and I like Eureka. Unlike with USA or TNT Syfy hasn’t traditionally done split seasons; young males tend to have short attention spans. LOL

  9. Well, that’s good news for next summer during the major networks’ “off-season”. That’ll give W13 another season to grow and hopefully it’ll acquire as passionate a fanbase as its sister show Eureka.

Well done to all connected with W13.

  10. MNIS

Finally a new show that I like that is not cancelled after its first season!

  11. Victor Hugo

Excellent news !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Warehouse 13 rules!

  12. Eric

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again… Eureka is better.
Warehouse 13 is decent, but a show like this needs a arcing season long plot in the background. It seems in the last episode they could have finally made one.

I think the episodes may have aired out of order of filming, due to Claudia being completely absent from the last one. I think maybe it was intended to air earlier on, but they decided they needed a younger wittier character to bicker w/ Artie, to add more comedy and maybe attract a younger crowd… so then the 2-3 episodes with Claudia were filmed and aired early.

I’m probably completely wrong. Who knows.

  13. Marc

Awesome! I love this show it is not Stargate but it still is fun to watch. I don’t think SGU will have this kind of success.

  14. Roger

“I think the episodes may have aired out of order of filming, due to Claudia being completely absent from the last one”

Didn’t they ask for claudia when they called?

  15. Eric

ya but that was one line that could be thrown in with 5 minutes of filming to try and correct the continuity errors…

  16. “Didn’t they ask for claudia when they called?”

Yes, but that could have been added in much later. The actress who plays Claudia was not seen on screen nor was her name in the opening credits/guest starring spots.

  17. Nightstar

Good news for the warehouse. I’m glad it has been renewed, spins all 13 episodes, and gets a back 7 or 9 or whatever the network decides to add.

I hope they work out some of the problems that have made it uneven to this point (in my view, anyway — uneven stories and a character who has multiple personalities thanks to indecisive writers and/or the actor doing a bit too much experimentation) and continue on their way to great success.

The show has great potential — it’s like a large, fancy celebration cake with the cake itself being the fantasy elements, covered with a delicately mixed fondant of mystery, steampunk, and science fiction, decorated with interesting character facets, and flavored with a bit of history.

I’m going to be quite interested to see the directions this series travels in the episodes ahead.

  18. I imagine Allison Scagliotti has a an acting contract that is only for X episodes, rather than the rest of the season. So I wouldn’t expect her to be in every episode. If she tracks well, they’ll probably make her a more permanent character, maybe in season two.

By the way, she’s also a DJ on Blip FM. Most of her tweets on Twitter are about that.

  19. SamSpade

I’m also glad Warehouse was renewed, as well as Eureka – I think they’re both good shows – Warehouse is getting better as it goes along. And, for the record, I liked Syfy before the name change – and I’m a woman. Love science fiction-type stories – and I think there are more women than you realize who feel the same.

  20. J. Norman

I’m glad that W13 got renewed. It is a watchable show. It is a long way from being appointment TV (at least for me), but it is something I will tune in and watch if I’m home.

As far as its success being the result of lots of females watching. . .presumably because of the name change, I can only be highly skeptical of that. I really have trouble believing that the show wouldn’t have had the same (female) audience under the “Sci Fi” umbrella.
