Last night's 10pm airing of Mad Men, the second episode of the third season averaged 1.9 million viewers between 10:00p-11:02p in preliminary numbers.
Sure, that's down from last week's stellar numbers for the premiere that drew 2.769 million (final numbers) but the trend is still Mad Men's friend for now. Last year's season two premiere drew 2.06 million in its initial airing, but the first airing of the second episode fell to 1.33 million, so give or take, season three's second episode is up 45% versus the second episode of season two. AMC has to be happy with that.
The combination of the 10pm, 11pm and 1am airing averaged 2.9 million total viewers, with the 10pm episode averaging 934,000 adults 18-49. On the night, across all three airings 1.3 million of the viewers were 18-49.

That’s a drop for Mad Men but it’s still doing great for AMC and its demo numbers are very good considering its a period drama. I think a Fourth season in the bag and I expect it’s going to win more Emmys.
Out of interest, how does Breaking Bad compare to Mad Men.
Jon, generally much lower than Mad Men is off to this year, and lower than Mad Men’s second season as well. But award winning and renewed for another season already nonetheless
Well this was definitely not the episode to reel in new viewers…it’s back to a slow build. Next week looks good from all the leaked recaps floating around due to the Itunes mishap.
Thanks Robert, I remember reading that it was beating Damages both on the night and through cumulative viewing. It’s not a easy drama to get into with the subject matter and serialized nature of the show but Bryan Cranston is brilliant in it.
It did better than last year in total vievers. But the drop it’s been significant and the percentage is similar, slightly better this year.
Last year it lost 35% of its first episode’s audience. This year it has lost 29% of it. Better, but still a consistent drop.
I think we should see how it will fare the next weeks to claim this a huge success.

How does last nights 10pm airing bring in 1.9 million viewers between 9-10:02 pm?
LOL RJ… brain fart. probably enhanced by my watching the east coast feed on the west coast so it was 7pm for me. I reconverted but only to central time. either way, fixed.
Great news for a great show. I’m sure its numbers will climb as the season continues.
I think its funny how we all read the same numbers but read it in different ways. I always expect the season Premieres and the Season finales of any series to post better numbers than the episodes in between(season premieres and finales are always publicised more). Bottom line is that the second episode of season three is up 45% compared to the second episode of the second season. To me, that is all good.
