I said on Friday that record lows for the the 36th Annual Daytime Emmy Award were a lock with the show appearing on the CW.

Last night's awards averaged 2.68 million people and a 0.6/2 rating/share among adults 18-49 from 8pm-10pm on Sunday night.  Earlier in the evening The Daytime Emmy Awards Live Red Carpet Special drew 1.21 million and an 0.4/1 with adults 18-49 from 7pm-8pm.

While the awards show did hit record lows (see table below) it was the best Sunday night The CW has had in a long, long, time.  Soon CW will turn Sunday nights back over to its affiliates to program.

This was a good number for them as The CW doesn’t score this high ever on a Sunday Night.

One of the problems are also this isn’t a network some soap fans aren’t familiar with so there were probably struggles for people finding the station.

I think they should air it again next year and really try to focus on getting a bigger number with more advertising and really reach all soap so they can all watch it.

The CW needs a soap and they could easily do it in daytime.

  2. Shem

How hard is it to find a station?

  3. Jimmy

The question becomes, why do they even air this award show? In the past, didn’t the Daytime Emmys air during the daytime block instead of primetime? Perhaps that’s where it belongs.

  4. Cody

I think soaps need to be replaced with new syndicated prime tim dramas like legend of the seeker. they are horrible to watch

  5. DJ Mike

Here is a brilliant concept. Air the Daytime Emmys on the “SOAP” network. It could air on Saturday or Sunday. The other option would be to continue airing on the CW (after all, I can’t remember them EVER having that good of a rating for a Sunday show).

IIRC, Soap Network was offered it, but they turned it down.

  7. Valerie

Jimmy, if you were to look at the chart in the article you would see that it has been on at primetime in the past.

  8. Linda

Jimmy’s right, though, in that the Daytime Emmy’s originally aired in daytime in the 1970′s and 1980′s. It didn’t air in primetime until 1991. (It also didn’t air at all in 1983 and 1984).

  9. ryan

i watched the emmy’s for the kids programs not the soaps how sad

  10. rob

I think the CW is happy with those numbers. It was higher than I expected it to get and im sure CW will do it again next year. It also gave them the chance to promote their new shows. I mean the Emmys did better than 90210 and Gossip Girl do.

  11. rob, I’m not sure what numbers you’re referring to, but the Emmys didn’t do better than 90210 and Gossip Girl in the demo that the CW says they care about (women 18-34) and would presumably want to promote their shows to.

The Emmy’s last night drew a 0.6 rating for women 18-34. Gossip Girl new episodes last season drew more like a 2.5 rating for women 18-34.

  12. forg

Well, at least it had 2+ million viewers. I was actually thinking it would only pull 1.5 million viewers. But nevertheless still low especially with the demo numbers. 7th Heaven and Reba on CW Sundays pulled higher total audience numbers. Probably next year’s Daytime Emmys will go cable or not air at all

  13. Feinnish Linzel

People are so, stupid how hard is it to find a station no wonder they can’t find the shows that move to the WB and UPN when The CW was those Stations. Seriously if you know that the show you love is moving then put some effort to look for.

  14. andrew

Ok, I love to harp on Dawn Ostroff’s failure, but this is truly sad.

Lets just put all of the BS aside (including the crappy shows, bad decisions, re-branding, etc).

What is it that just makes things that air on The CW get such low ratings overall, minus the demographic spin?

I thought this could actually be very lucrative for them, perhaps even draw in a decent 4 million viewers, but I don’t get it.

How the hell do you lose 2.7 million viewers compared to last year? It doesn’t make sense, especially when, had it aired on any other network, the numbers would’ve slightly decreased from last year or stayed the same.

    It’s just sad…
Just forget about all the crap.
