“The Fox Broadcasting Company will not air the Presidential Address to Congress on Wednesday, September 9 at 8:00 PM (ET). FOX’s sister networks, Fox News Channel and the Fox Business Network will air the presidential address in its entirety. FOX will alert viewers with an on-screen graphic at the top of the 8:00 PM (ET) hour that the presidential address is available on Fox News Channel and the Fox Business Network.”
Official FOX statement re: Obama address

I’ll be watching Fox for sure. Bhobama is way over done.
That’s why I love FOX! If the CW doesn’t have to show it, neither do they! Plus, it will be on like 20 other networks, so I don’t see any issue here.
The president should only air his crap on news channel, not on major broadcast network at the biggest airing time of the day…
Wonder how much lower the ratings this time around will be from the previous broadcasts? This bucket in this particular well has got to be getting close to bouncing off the rocks on the bottom.
Wow…it seems like Fox is now publicly declaring its aversion to all things Obama. This wouldn’t have happened to Bush or Clinton. I would understand if they did so on their cable networks, but on their main network? It’s like they want to incite a civil war.
Big surprise. Fox has a history of suppressing news that doesn’t fit their mold. They have Griff Jenkins actually riding aboard the Tea Bagger Express, and reporting on every stop. But they have no one covering the Health Care bus tour that is attracting as many (or more) participants.
This time Fox is deliberately contributing to the stupidity of their viewers by blacking out both the President and the GOP response at a time when they are complaining that people don’t know enough about the plan.
Fox Broadcast Network is not Fox News Channel. FNC’s biases (or alleged biases for those of you who take issue with accusations of bias) have nothing to do with this decision by Fox. This is purely business and not even slightly political. At all. Every network has refused to air presidential addresses previously, including ABC and NBC (and I think CBS, maybe?) in November 2001 if I recall the last time this debate came up. THIS IS NOT POLITICALLY DRIVEN! Period.
@consigiliano A civil war? This isn’t the first time they’ve not aired one of Obama’s addresses ya know.
And they’re only doing it, because they lose millions of dollars everytime they go off the air for a president. And especially with the extremely hyped premiere of Glee, they’re in no position to agree with Obama on this.
I’m with Julia. THIS is not about politics. It’s about FOX having had a major fall launch planned on 9/9 and that it really needs to premiere Glee out of the premiere of So You Think You Can Dance. FOX has spent a lot of time and money promoting this.
CBS is preempting repeats, NBC an AGT recap show, and ABC the summer show “Crash Course”. The stakes were a bit higher for FOX.
I agree. FOX has every right to run their regular programming since they have a business reason to do so. I’m a fan of the president, but I feel there is no reason to do this in prime time, and if they insist on doing it in prime time, there are plenty of cable channels to cover it. This is not a political decision. The president should not expect unlimited access to broadcast television.
If they did this on Thursday and pre-empted Surivor’s premiere the following week I would have really been miffed.
Good for Fox. Don’t throw millions away for this when other networks will cover it.
Even as a Democrat, I can’t fault fox for doing this. Still, this isn’t “just another Obama press conference”, the President addressing a joint session of congress is a rare event and hasn’t happened since 1992. Ironically the last time it happened was Clinton talking about health care reform.
Fox is a part of the Fox Networks. Nbc AND Msnbc are airing it. I don’t blame them for not airing it. It is not in their political interest to do so. I’m glad their finally manning up and showing their true colors. What % of Bush speeches did they not air?
consigiliano says: “Wow…it seems like Fox is now publicly declaring its aversion to all things Obama.”
News Corpse says: “Big surprise. Fox has a history of suppressing news that doesn’t fit their mold.”
I voted for President Obama, and I’m honestly tired of his primetime appearances. The importance of what any President has to say is inversely proportional to the number of times s/he interjects her/himself into primetime to say it. There is nothing special about President Obama appearing in primetime AGAIN for the third or fourth time since he was elected. Sometimes, less is more.
Well, there’s always the cover of Time, CBS, NBC, ABC, NPR, and just about everywhere else. I’m getting sick of him, too; over-saturation. Every fart: “It’s historical!” (give me a break).
What I’m REALLY tired of is the congress. We’ve got to find a flush lever. I hope it’s labelled “2010″; that’s where the trouble actually is.
I’m a liberal and I feel that Fox is doing the right thing. I’ve said it time and again that these speeches should be programed during the evening news hours. The even news programs are going to repeat the speeches anyway. Know one likes it when you screw with their schedule at the last minute. I know I don’t so why should Fo be any different.
Why doesn’t Obama just pitch NBC to give him his own nightly “news” show. I’m sure MSNBC will give it to him with no questions asked.
@Julia keep telling yourself that.
Wow. I am surprised. The President of the United States is freakin oversatured!? EPICFAILOFTHENIGHT!
Unless it is some calamity that warrants a speech, President Obama might want to hold off any primetime speeches for a few months. The networks (even NBC) really don’t want any disruptions with the new fall shows. Especially this season with the X factor of Jay Leno’s 9 p.m. (central time) show. Also, the World Series in October and early November sweeps will effect the availability. Fox not carrying it, right wing owners or not, has benefitted some shows and evenings.
