Scoreboard FOX NBC ABC CW Uni CBS
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 3.1/8 1.9/5 1.6/4 1.5/4 1.3/4 1.3/4
Rating/Share: Adults 18-34 3.3/10 1.3/4 1.1/3 1.8/5 1.5/4 0.9/3
Total Viewers (million) 6.89 8.11 5.43 3.24 3.46 6.02

Update: The presidential address was seen by 31.8 32.1 million across 10 networks in the final numbers.

Update: September 10, 2009 9:32a PDT, updated with some notes from FOX.

FOX easily won the night dominating the adults 18-49 and adults 18-34 demos.

From 8pm-9pm the president averaged 21.2 million just on ABC (adults 18-49 rating/share =1.8/5, 7.4 million total viewers), CBS (1.2/4, 5.63 million) and NBC (1.9/6.8.16 million).

People want to jump the gun on declaring So You Think You Can Dance in the fall a mistake and a loser.  For now, FOX laughs at you and will take its 2.7/8 adults 18-49 rating and   3.0/9 with adults 18-34 and not worry that there were only 6.465 million viewers.  Leave Marc Berman to complain about that while FOX smiles at its year over year improvements even if it wasn't as strong as the summer version of the show.

From FOX:

The Fall season premiere of SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE posted a 2.7/8 among Adults 18-49 and grew over FOX’s regular Fall’08 average in the Wednesday 8p hour by +26% among Adults 18-34 (2.9/9 vs. 2.3/8).  SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE won the 8p hour among Adults 18-49, Adults 18-34/25-54, Teens and virtually all key demos and showed growth in its second half hour among Adults 18-49 (+8%, 2.8/8 vs. 2.6/8), Adults 18-34 (+15%, 3.1/9 vs. 2.7/9), Teens (+13%, 1.8/6 vs. 1.6/6) and Total Viewers (+5%, 6.6 vs. 6.3 Mil.)

And I'm sure someone will declare the premiere of Glee a failure because it only got 7.136 million viewers, but with a 3.3/9 adults 18-49 rating and a 3.6/10 with adults 18-34, FOX will no doubt be dubbing this "Fall's new hit" before I even hit the "publish" button.  Glee destroyed America's Got Talent in the demos.  Though AGT had more viewers (9.69M) its 2.1/5 adults 18-49 rating and 1.5/4 adults 18-34 rating were relatively paltry.  With adults 18-34 Glee won by more than 100% over AGT!

From FOX:

The season premiere of Glee outperformed its series preview following American Idol on 5/19/09 by +9% in Adults 18-34 (3.6/10 vs. 3.3/10) and +26% in Women 18-34 (5.3/14 vs. 4.2/12).  Glee built upon its lead-in by +22% among Adults 18-49 (3.3/9 vs. 2.7/8), +24% among Adults 18-34 (3.6/10 vs. 2.9/9), +18% in Teens (2.0/7 vs. 1.7/6) and +12% in Total Viewers (7.3 vs. 6.5 Mil)

Reports are that Glee rose to a 3.5 w/adults 18-49 in the final numbers, making it FOX's best scripted premiere in 3 years.

Things weren't so great for America's Next Top Model at 9pm with a 1.5/4 rating with adults 18-49 and a 1.8/5 rating with adults 18-34 and 3.24 million viewers between 8p-10pm for its 13th and height-challenged installment.  But it still delivered the best Wednesday for the CW since  March 4 with its sweet-spot target of women 18-34.  Here's what the CW had to say about the performance:

The premiere of the 13th edition (yes, 13!!) of Top Model delivered the network's best Wednesday since March 4 in women 18-34 (2.7/8), adults 18-34 (1.7/5), women 18-49 (2.2/6), adults 18-49 (1.5/4) and total viewers (3.2mil).

Top Model continues to hold up, maintaining 90% of last's fall's premiere delivery among the show's core women 18-34 audience (in case your curious, it held 91% of its year ago premiere in total viewers).

Despite facing the hyped-up premiere of Glee at 9pm, Top Model posted growth in the second hour, building 8% among women 18-34, 13% among adults 18-34, 20% in women 18-49, 14% in adults 18-49 and 13% in total viewers.

The CW ranked second on Wednesday with women 18-34 (2.7/8), adults 18-34 (1.7/5), females 12-34 (2.5/8) and persons 12-34 (1.6/5).

At 9pm ABC's Wipeout was far off normal levels with a 1.7/4 with adults 18-49 and 5.03 million viewers.  Primetime: Crime fared worse at 10pm (1.3/4, 3.84M).

CBS repeats landed it tied for last with adults 18-49 and last with adults 18-34 with a repeats of Criminal Minds (1.4/4, 6.21M) and CSI: NY (1.3/3, 6.23M).

Please keep in mind that preliminary numbers for live events (like a live presidential address) are very subject to change.  Full viewership numbers for the speech, including cable networks will be available this afternoon.  In the meanwhile you can check out the combined viewership numbers for President Obama's recent press conferences.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

  1. SYTYCD may wind up a loser this fall, but only time will tell. We have no idea, yet, the impact of being on against the POTUS speech had on it. But given the stronger competition and short wait time for this fall season… it would be folly to expect SYTYCD to match summer levels.

And, really, we won’t know if there’s been true damage to the franchise until NEXT SUMMER’S premiere.

Oh dear for ANTM, but it still delivers good figures for CW. At least it’s still holding on for their target demos.

  3. Anonymous

Wow, I guess Fox really hurt “Talent” last night (the show is getting a little tiring now, let’s just get a winner already!)

Glee did really well….but I doubt they’ll be able to maintain those types of numbers.

  4. For ANTM, down 10% in viewers and women 18-34 from last season’s premiere isn’t doomsday. Season to season dips like that aren’t surprising. Big dips and *any* increases for broadcast shows are the big news.

  5. Samuel

I guess this is the new reality of television, 7.1 millions for a new show premiere is normal… Still, strong demos for the show, stronger than SYTYCD.

  6. Jon

Glee did well but the real test will be the next two weeks when it faces tougher competition, I reckon FOX will be patient with it but they have two midseason dramas that could get the post SYTYCD/Idol slot.

ANTM was lower than last year but considering it was up against two shows that are in its audience, it fared alright.

  7. I think the shocking thing is that ANTM is barely doing better than 90210 or MP in W18-34. I’m sure that ANTM will be able to hold this number better than either of those shows, but still. This is supposed to be their big show.

  8. Chief

I think Obama’s address, the early start to Fox’s season, and a confusing marketing strategy by Fox labeling last night’s episode the season premiere after showing a “preview” back in May and a Director’s Cut and Tweetpeat last week all could have contributed to Glee being lower-rated than it could have been otherwise. Even still, excellent demo numbers with a weakened SYTYCD as a lead-in.

  9. Chief? It was FOX’s best scripted fall premiere in two years. while the president’s speech likely played some role, one could (and I would!) argue that what you say was a “confusing” marketing strategy was not confusing, but rather quite effective. I’m not really sure how you could reach any other conclusion, but reasonable people can disagree.

  10. Chief

Robert, I think you read my post as more negative than it really was. The numbers were excellent no doubt. My point is that they *could* have been even better if just a few things had been done differently on Fox’s part.

I do think the marketing strategy was confusing because I’ve been having to explain to other forum members at a message board that I’m the administrator at all week long that Wednesday night was finally the night where a new episode of Glee would air. Of course that’s just anecdotal and maybe you’re right and they did it the best way they could. All I know is that it was confusing for at least some people out there.

  11. Chief

Again, not trying to seem negative. A 3.3 or 3.4 demo for an early September premiere is excellent by anyone’s standards. And Glee is a show that I expect to maintain a steady number all season-long if not grow slightly.

  12. dave

Can glee hold, or god forbid in these days of TV build? My guess is that it holds well settling in at a consistent 3.0 by the fourth ep. My reasoning; critics have given it mixed reviews and shows that are critical darlings in recent years do poorly. So thank goodness Glee dodged that bullet. :)

  13. Sean

Glad to see Glee doing well, nobody really listens to total viewers anymore and Glee is getting more people talking about it than any other new show at the moment. Brilliant episode as well, really hope this continues to be the success story it deserves.

  14. Chief, my point is that the ratings might have been WORSE if FOX didn’t premiere it last May after AI, etc., etc. I think that case is just as easy to make — easier, honestly, but we can agree to disagree about that! :-)

  15. GEORGE 11

so cw really going to sink this year!!how dissapointing!!!! :(
    top model was great yesterday.

  16. George, compared to last season ANTM’s only down 10%! Why is that surprising to people?

  17. Maxi

HI, sorry to bother can sobody please explain to me the 18-49 ratings and what all of the other ratings mean, thank you

  18. Marylander

I wonder how long before the cable news networks give us their numbers for Obama’s speech.

  19. Rhi

I think those demo numbers are excellent for a fall premiere. Sure the 7.1m is kind of on the low end of expectations, but I’m sure FOX is very happy with those demo numbers. I watched the show live, DVR’d it and watched it on FOX’s website all last night lol and I got many of my friends to watch it with me, they all thought it was hilarious and entertaining as well, I think Glee will be fine and be renewed.

  20. Marylander, cable news numbers are out typically late afternoon Eastern time if the recent history is any indication.
