Dollhouse would have better ratings if it had somehow incorporated vampires into the show's theme, or at least the title of the show according to a person close to the series. The person, who lacked authority to release the information, spoke to me exclusively on condition of anonymity.
"Joss has been heard around the set muttering, 'Hello!? The dolls sleep in high-tech coffins for crissakes! Coffins!"
Ok, so I made all of that up. Well, except for the dolls sleeping in high tech coffins, which they do. And at this point there seems little doubt that if the exact same show were called Vampire Dollhouse, more people would watch it.
Joss Whedon is no stranger to having success with vampires, though my perception is he had his success when vampires weren't quite as hot as they are right now. Between Twilight, True Blood and even the CW averaging nearly 5 million for the premiere of The Vampire Diaries, the genre is on fire.
Dollhouse returns on Friday, September 25, without fangs or a blood-thirsty Caroline, but with the high-tech coffins and an appearance from another Battlestar Galactica alumnus.

Dollhouse became new Chuck…
that would be cool i would watch again
Beginning after Moonlight got axed the vampire genre in both movies and television started to really take off. Id be interested to see how Dollhouse would look if it did incorporate a Vampire theme.
I’m surprised no one has tapped Whedon yet for a new vampire project. I would love to see him return to the form that made him famous.
@ dario… how so?
This is too true, Vampire Diaries is riding on Twilight’s coat tails. That VD pilot is one of the worst things I have seen all year.
I really wonder what FOX want from Dollhouse maybe if it can hold a 1.5 or there abouts during the fall it could get a full season. i know it went down alot during its final eps but so did everthing last april and may. Anyway the vampire thing im so sick of for god sake Twilight movies suck.
The only good vampire show is True Blood.
BTVS and Angel?
Buffy was a bit dull more me i didnt like sarah michelle geller i never saw much of angel i did sort of like that i guess. but True blood is far better.
Yeah I’m not sure if Whedon is going to tap into the supernatural to save Dollhouse. He’s been trying to coax TSCC fans back in, but maybe he should worry about roping in the Whedonites that clearly didn’t tune in.
But vampires? I’m not into the recent teen vampire craze. Maybe because they sparkle, or maybe because it’s generally only much older guys trying to seduce high school girls… instead of killing people. To be fair I did watch Buffy and then Angel. But the awkward relationship wasn’t always the focus. In hindsight, Angel should join Edward in having a seat over there.
Still, I’m into vampire stories myself (note the above), but not pure teen dramas under their guise. I was fooled before into watching a mystery/scifi type of show called Kyle X/Y, that was merely sidelined for overwhelming teenage angst. Oh how I wanted to slap the writers.
I think we approaching maximum vampire capacity. Any more TV shows with vampires would just be unoriginal. Yeah, “unoriginal” is not a sin in TV biz, but vampires should go the way of TV westerns. I’m getting out stakes, garlic, crosses, silver and anything else that can deter vampires.
Chad, but it’s not just a teen vampire craze. True Blood is a hit with the 18-49 crowd (~2.8 rating in its highs) and even Vampire Diaries pulled an A18-49 rating over 2 (2.1) in its premiere.
I think Whedon’s done with vamps. Yeah True Blood is a hit and actually good, VD is craptastic. But Buffy was the original, you can’t argue against saying that BTVS started it all.
Actually, Josh, you can. If Buffy started the current craze Moonlight would have been a hit. The current craze is all Twilight.
Meh, I suppose. I still don’t see VD sticking for adults and I don’t always buy what the Nielsen system always says. The water color is definitely as scientific as a box that sits in a family’s living room.
Speaking of Buffy… Imagine it without SMG, Hannigan, Marsters, or even Whedon’s campy dialogue. That’s what the remake will be.
LOL, but “meh” to your water cooler analytics. The water cooler very well represents what the people at the water cooler are saying and nothing else.
When it comes to national averages, Nielsen actually is much more scientific than the water cooler.
I am trying to watch VD right now , so far it is horrendously boring.
I wouldn’t be suprised if the ratings over the next few months of Vampire Diaries were higher than Dollhouse. That would be great for The CW but horrible for FOX.
any show on CBS needs to just call itself CSI. CSI: Swingtown would have been renewed
