Scoreboard NBC FOX CBS ABC CW
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 1.4/5 1.0/3 0.9/3 0.9/3 0.5/2
Total Viewers (million) 6.07 3.76 4.23 3.55 1.40

NBC won the night with a relatively (for the night) strong outing from Dateline.  I'm not sure what was on Dateline last night, but regardless it averaged a 1.7/6 and 7.32 million between 9pm-11pm and averaged a 1.85/6 and 7.84 million between 10pm-11pm when 20/20 in its season premiere had the Barbara Walters' interview with LaToya Jackson which averaged only a 1.4/4 and 5.02 million between 9pm and 10pm.   One comment wonders if this is the lowest-rated season premiere ever for 20/20. I don't have that info, but it's a good guess...

Earlier on NBC was a repeat of Southland (0.9/3, 3.55 million) and earlier in the night ABC ran repeats of Supernanny (0.9/3, 3.32M) and Ugly Betty (0.6/2, 2.58 million).

FOX came in second for the night with adults 18-49 with Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader (1.1/4, 4.64M) and a repeat of Glee's season premiere (1.0/3, 2.98M).

CBS repeats wound up in Third place for the night and Ghost Whisperer (1.1/4, 4.53M) wasn't quite as peas-and-carrotish with Medium (0.9/3, 4.00M) this week.  Numb3rs averaged an 0.9/3 and 4.16M in a repeat at 10pm.

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES

Over on The CW a repeat of The Vampire Diaries was relatively strong (at least for a Friday night repeat for the CW) with a 0.7/3, and 2.04M.  Melrose Place? Not nearly as strong in a repeat of its premiere with 0.4/1 and 1.02 million viewers.  Especially in the context of the Melrose Place, Ugly Betty and Glee repeats that aired last night, CW must be delighted with The Vampire Diaries.  And at least currently, I'd imagine that delight is offesetting any of the the "oh #!*%!" sentiment surrounding Melrose.

And yes, I know the averages for the two CW shows don't add up into the average in the table above, but sadly we don't usually see the data directly on Saturday mornings and got it from Marc Berman. Whether the numbers listed for the night's averages were entered incorrectly on his end, or the Melrose Place/Vampire Diaries numbers were, I won't know for sure until Monday...

We're still two weeks away from the first Friday night of the new season.  Next week brings more Dateline, the ALMA Awards and more repeats, though next Friday will at least have something a little new and interesting: The Jay Leno Show at 10pm which will face off against a new airing of  20/20 on ABC.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

  1. Ron

It was also the season premiere of 20/20. Perhaps its lowest rated premiere ever?

  2. victor hugo

Only last night i could watch Vampire Diaries and is a good show with great songs, however Melrose Place was so boring!!!!!

  3. You are correct. Also for some reason when I saw the award show between 8pm-10pm next week I didn’t even scroll over to 10pm to see 20/20 was new next week as well. I can’t confirm that it’s the lowest premiere for 20/20 ever, but it’s a good guess and I’ll update the post.

  4. Robert

Not great numbers for Ghost and Medium. I hope its just a one week blip.

  5. tdot

i know this isn’t the right post to ask
but does anyone know if FOX still has any the Moment of Truth episodes in the can?
i feel like the Moment of Truth and Lie to Me would’ve been a good match or if FOX ran 3 hour blocks of primetime…

    8- Moment of Truth
    9- House
    10- Lie to Me

    just a fun thought

  6. Ron

“had the Barbara Walter’s” –apostrophe goes after the s

  7. Ron

Also there is really no reason for the Dollhouse poster pic. It’s not on for a few weeks, just a blatant advertisement.

  8. Ron, ragging on my apostrophe abuses may get you banned from the comments. And it’s a full time job really, so you should just let it slide :-)

The Dollhouse pic in these posts, along with being my Twitter background is a month-long penance for this.

TDOT: I know there are some unaired episodes of MOT, but I can’t remember how many. I’m not sure if some deal with USA Network on in-season House repeats may muck up FOX Fridays that are just House and Lie To Me repeats. But I think you will see ‘Til Death, Brothers and Dollhouse for 13 weeks pretty much regardless of ratings. What happens in January though is another story…

Also, FOX only programs between 8pm-10pm nationally so it doesn’t need to have anything for 10pm.

  9. Douglas

Glee wasn’t the season premiere, they repeat the second episode (which aired this wednesday).

Vampire Diaries will end the week with 8 millions viwers? Tomorow there’s another repeat…

  10. Douglas the second episode of Glee was the SEASON premiere, just not the SERIES premiere. Probably more confusing than it should be, but oh well!

  11. Adam

Haha I love the random Dollhouse pic in this article. It needs all the advertisement it can get. As a True Blood fan, I refuse to watch Vampire Diaries. :P

  12. Chis

i cant wait for new season of my fav shows

  13. Partylikeapumpkin

20/20 is definitely showing it’s age while Dateline seems to be experiencing a revival

  14. Josh

I cant wait for dollhouse either, the pic is just reminding us of many more debates to be had over its low numbers.
I watched the first five minutes or so of VD(hilarious abbreviation, and yes im 5) and it was laugh out loud funny. The long stares, labored dialouge, and that oh so cliche moment when the brunnete lead meets the vampire lead by accident and they cant seem to walk around each other! I at least have to give it props for not knowing how bad it is & providing laughs. Oh and that pesky wb music that is layered over everything! At least the CW has a hit on their hands. I predict solid ratings.

  15. RJ

@ Josh – You should have watched for than 5 minutes. It got better after that.

  16. GEORGE 11

Why melrose place has so weak ratings!!
    its so good!!
its my fav new show of the season.
i hope that the cw wont cancel it!!

  17. Isabel

Well George, ratings don’t necessarily mean quality, there are a lot more factors involved in how well a show does in the ratings.

American Idol is just bunch of annoying wannabe singers oversinging on stage, it’s basically a rip off of Star Search, not particularly new, original, or thought provoking material, but it continues to dominate the idiot box. *Idiot* box.

  18. Mark

I watched The Vampire Diaries and Glee last night!

  19. Dan

Both Vampire Diaries and Melrose Place are getting a full season anyway. Melrose because its a 90210 repeat and CW wouldn’t immediately axe it and Vampire diaries because of its ratings and compatibility with Supernatural.

  20. Tar

i think Melrose Place will be canned after 13 episodes they have Life Unexpected waiting to expect it and unless The Beautiful Life completely bombs Melrose Place is a big weak link for them and its probably much more expensive than TBL & VD
