NBC won the night with a relatively (for the night) strong outing from Dateline.  I'm not sure what was on Dateline last night, but regardless it averaged a 1.7/6 and 7.32 million between 9pm-11pm and averaged a 1.85/6 and 7.84 million between 10pm-11pm when 20/20 in its season premiere had the Barbara Walters' interview with LaToya Jackson which averaged only a 1.4/4 and 5.02 million between 9pm and 10pm.   One comment wonders if this is the lowest-rated season premiere ever for 20/20. I don't have that info, but it's a good guess...

Earlier on NBC was a repeat of Southland (0.9/3, 3.55 million) and earlier in the night ABC ran repeats of Supernanny (0.9/3, 3.32M) and Ugly Betty (0.6/2, 2.58 million).

FOX came in second for the night with adults 18-49 with Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader (1.1/4, 4.64M) and a repeat of Glee's season premiere (1.0/3, 2.98M).

CBS repeats wound up in Third place for the night and Ghost Whisperer (1.1/4, 4.53M) wasn't quite as peas-and-carrotish with Medium (0.9/3, 4.00M) this week.  Numb3rs averaged an 0.9/3 and 4.16M in a repeat at 10pm.

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES

Over on The CW a repeat of The Vampire Diaries was relatively strong (at least for a Friday night repeat for the CW) with a 0.7/3, and 2.04M.  Melrose Place? Not nearly as strong in a repeat of its premiere with 0.4/1 and 1.02 million viewers.  Especially in the context of the Melrose Place, Ugly Betty and Glee repeats that aired last night, CW must be delighted with The Vampire Diaries.  And at least currently, I'd imagine that delight is offesetting any of the the "oh #!*%!" sentiment surrounding Melrose.

And yes, I know the averages for the two CW shows don't add up into the average in the table above, but sadly we don't usually see the data directly on Saturday mornings and got it from Marc Berman. Whether the numbers listed for the night's averages were entered incorrectly on his end, or the Melrose Place/Vampire Diaries numbers were, I won't know for sure until Monday...

We're still two weeks away from the first Friday night of the new season.  Next week brings more Dateline, the ALMA Awards and more repeats, though next Friday will at least have something a little new and interesting: The Jay Leno Show at 10pm which will Face Off against a new airing of  20/20 on ABC.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.
