Fall Semester at mtvU Features Music Mayhem, Social Entrepreneurs, Celebrity Stand Ins, Professors Striking Back, Award-Winning Documentaries, 10 Million Student Comments and More

New York, NY – September 18, 2009mtvU, MTV’s 24-hour college network, today announced it’s on-air, online and on campus programming for Fall 2009.  This semester, mtvU continues to spotlight students’ limitless talent and creativity while supplying them with one-of-a-kind opportunities and resources to catapult their careers.   As always, mtvU’s programming showcases the music college students live their lives to, while magnifying the efforts of young people working to spark positive change on campus and around the globe.  mtvU is now available on approximately 90 percent of four-year universities nationwide with enrollments over 20,000 and welcomes Yale, Rice University, Virginia Tech, Tulane, Tufts University and James Madison University the as some of the network’s newest affiliates.

Notable mtvU programming and events slated for this semester include:

  • “PROFESSORS STRIKE BACK” – The professors are back this fall in the popular series “Professors Strike Back,” and this time Dr. Michio Kaku has something to say to students.  The world-renowned professor, theoretical physicist, and best-selling author makes his voice heard in what the New York Times heralds as a “cult college hit.” To check out the latest episodes, log on to Professors Strike Back.
  • “MOVERS AND CHANGERS” – mtvU premieres a new short-form series, “Movers & Changers,” following young social entrepreneurs who are poised to make a positive impact on society on Monday, November 23, 2009.  Finalists from the “Movers & Changers,” challenge, which is open until October 16, 2009, will be featured in the series as they compete for the ultimate prize of $25,000 in start-up money and the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to ring the Opening BellSM at the New York Stock Exchange.
  • “ULALUME HALLOWEEN MUSIC FESTIVAL”  – MTV will unearth explosive performances by Paramore, AFI, Dead By Sunrise, Kid Cudi and more in its first-ever Halloween festival, “Ulalume” on Friday, October 23, 2009 at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland.  Under a gray autumn sky with withering leaves, the festival grounds will transform into a ghoul haunted woodland featuring a costume contest and more tricks set to unfold throughout the night.   Performances from “Ulalume” will air during a Halloween-themed week on MTV, mtvU and mtvU.com.

  • DARIUS GOES WEST” – On Sunday, September 27, 2009, mtvU and MTV2 will air the television premiere of the multi-award-winning documentary film,“Darius Goes West” starring Darius Weems, a young man on a mission to effect a cure for his disease, Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD).  Serious and seriously funny, this all-male road trip flick documents Weems leaving home for the first time at age 15 with 11 of his best (high school and college age) friends in an attempt to get his wheelchair customized on MTV's popular show Pimp My Ride. MTV2 will air the film at 12pm ET/PT, and mtvU will air it at 6pm ET/PT. 
  • “STAND IN” – A new roster of global icons will surprise college campuses this spring and serve as “Stand In” professors for a day in mtvU’s Emmy-nominated series.  With mtvU cameras rolling, pop culture, celebrity or political figures will visit mtvU affiliate schools to guest teach unsuspecting classes.  Past “Stand In” episodes have featured Madonna, Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel, Rawandan President Paul Kagame, Larry David, Don Cheadle, Bill Gates, Cameron Diaz and Kanye West.
  • “10 MILLION REASONS TO CHECK OUT RATEMYPROFESSORS.COM” – RateMyProfessors.com, the Internet’s largest destination for professor ratings, has 10 million comments from students rating their favorite - and not-so favorite - professors on campus.  That’s 10,000,000 opinions to help students choose classes from RateMyProfessors.com’s database of over 1 million professors in nearly 6,000 schools.  In the coming months, RateMyProfessors.com, which is owned and operated by mtvU, is adding additional features including an iPhone application that will allow users to plug into the database from the road, a “Rate Your Campus” function, and the ability to rate the latest on and off campus events.
  • mtvU CELEBRATES HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH” – From September 15 – October 15, mtvU will join MTV Tr3s to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with video blocks from leading Latino artists.
