from James Hibberd:

"Curb" drew 1.1 million viewers, down just a hair from last year. "Bored" (1 million) held 92% of the "Curb" audience.

By comparison, HBO's other new comedy this year, "Hung," opened to a record 2.8 million viewers in June, though with a much stronger lead in. Adding their first repeat episodes, "Curb" ended up with 1.9 million viewers; "Bored" with 1.6 million.

This should, but won't, end any discussion of the benefit Hung gets from True Blood....

update: at 10:30pm  Entourage did much better with 1.827 million viewers and a 1.1/3 A1849 (courtesy of our friend TVBill).

Have you seen any numbers for Crash yet? They promoted the hell out of the season premier of it and it was a disaster. They abandon at least 3 cliff hanger storylines from last season.

  2. ryan

but they also have to compete with all the new shows of the new season

  3. Jon

Is that bad or good for Curb? Bored to Death was critically slated so I can’t see it lasting but I imagine Curb will last until Larry David says so.

I imagine that Dexter will beat them both on Sunday,

Hey Robert, ENTOURAGE got 1.827 million viewers, 1.1/3 A1849. :-)

  5. nkinsey

Can’t say I’m surprised. Hasn’t it been two years since the last season of Curb?

  6. thank you Bill!

  7. Avery

Wasn’t Entourage averaging 3+ million viewers when True Blood was on? Sorry, Robert, but the proof is ih the pudding! True Blood helped Hung which in turn helped Entourage!

  8. don’t apologize to me, I definitely think True Blood was raising all boats:

so will curb get another seson if it can get more or less these numbers for each ep? with the seinfeld reunon thing ratings are bound to improve

These numbers only look tiny because they are in comparison to True Blood. The reality is that these numbers are typical for any HBO show. True Blood is a phenomenon all by itself. Entourage’s numbers this week proved that, as would Hung’s numbers if it hadn’t followed TB.

but it was on against the emmys and cowboys game

  12. Dan

With so many other series renewed. This confirms that Bored to Death will be axed while Curb Your Enthusiasm (which is starting to show its age) may or may not get an eighth season.

curb has never been a big ratings getter… it gets awards, has it’s fans and is just one small piece to the hbo puzzle. it’ll come back as long as larry david wants to do it or if the quality plummets… but i doubt david would allow that to happen

Enough excuses people, the shows just can not perform like True Blood. True Blood went up against the VMA’s and only slightly lost viewers, I can’t wait to see next season of TB, the numbers are sure to get even BIGGER!

  15. tvmegafan

WOW look at the drop in entourages numbers, after True Blood leaves them in the dust. Same goes for hung if they did’nt follow, maybe we’ll never know whose actually a true hung fan ans not just leaving their Tv on after watching True Blood.

  16. Dan

That just means True Blood is a true hit which helped out Hung this year. Numbers look like this now

    Curb Your Enthusiasm 1.1 million
    Bored to Death 1 million
    Entourage 1.8 million

Though it held a good amount of it’s Curb lead in, Bored to Death still dropped, which means after all episodes air, the show will be axed.

Would HBO ever increase the episode order to more than 13?
    is that ever done?
i know the sopranos had some weird episode orders at the end.

  18. kariato

It would be interesting to see how the subscript numbers are effected after TB finished. How many millions will drop HBO for SHOWTIME with Dexter starting next season. If HBO can keep the subscriptions number up that TB must have brought in then I don’t think they care about ratings but if revenue slips then they may be forced to get a little bit more creative which has never been a problem for them. Also remember how badly TB started last year it was not until late October that people stopped saying it was a mistake that they renewed it.

  19. Dan

vsaint – No, in a series first season, HBO never has more than 8-10. If a series goes on for a while like Curb, maybe it will get around 12 but, but Curb has always ran for 10 episodes, and is doing so for this season.

  20. tom

kariato: when HBO lost Sopranos they didn’t lose any subscribers despite the predictions of doom. most people aren’t obsessed loons who decide what cable they pay for based on 1 particular show. most avg. people (those who don’t come to this website) keep the same stuff all year round. that’s why they need to program beyond one show like true blood. there are some who subscribe to hbo that don’t watch TB but do watch curb, or big love instead, or the real sex docus, or bill maher… it’s all the stuff added together… not just 1 show. if sopranos ending didn’t affect hbo then true blood will certainly not.
