FOX ratings highlights for week of September 14-20; FOX takes Thursday

FOX continued its strong start to Fall this week with impressive mid-week performances.  Wednesday night’s episodes of So You Think You Can Dance and Glee once again achieved healthy ratings and showed high retention from their previous week’s premieres.  Thursday night marked a major FOX milestone as the season premieres of BONES and Fringe catapulted the network to its first Thursday night win with an entire lineup of scripted programming in 17 years.

On Wednesday night, So You Think You Can Dance delivered a solid 2.4/7 rating among Adults 18-49 in the 8p hour.  The dance hit outperformed the finale of NBC’s America’s Got Talent by +42% in Adults 18-34 and retained 89% of its previous week’s ratings in Adults 18-49 and 93% in Adults 18-34.  So You Think You Can Dance showed meaningful growth in its second half hour and so far has made gains over FOX’s regular Fall’08 average for its Wednesday 8p timeslot.

At 9pm on Wednesday, the second episode of FOX’s new fall comedy Glee posted a 3.2/9 among Adults 18-49 to outperform the finale of NBC’s America’ Got Talent by +29% in Adults 18-34. The new fall hit showed strong retention from last week’s premiere, holding onto 91% of its previous week’s ratings in Adults 18-49 and 97% in Adults 18-34 and again built upon its lead-in by +33% among Adults 18-49, +33% among Adults 18-34, +70% in Teens, and +18% in Total Viewers.  So far this season, Glee has shown strong growth compared to FOX’s regular Fall’08 average in the Wednesday 9p hour, increasing +83% among Adults 18-49, +125% among Adults 18-34, +73% among Teens, and +45% in Total Viewers.

Thursday’s BONES and Fringe season premieres marked FOX’s highest rated fully scripted Thursday night in over three years among Adults 18-49 and in 12 and a half years among Total Viewers. At 8p BONES achieved an impressive 3.1/10 among Adults 18-49, outperforming its previous season’s Thursday average by +15% among Adults 18-49, +10% among Adults 18-34 and +11% among Total Viewers.  The forensic fan favorite also significantly outperformed NBC’s season premieres of SNL Update and Parks and Recreation by +55% among Adults 18-49, +15% among Adults 18-34 and +100% among Total Viewers.

The premiere of Fringe at 9p also kicked off the season with a bang, posting a 3.0/8 among Adults 18-49. Fringe showed substantial gains compared to FOX’s regular programming in the time period last Fall, increasing +58% among Adults 18-49 and +81% among Adults 18-34.

Last night at 9p, week two of GLEE posted a 3.2/9 among Adults 18-49 to rank No. 2 in the hour among Adults 18-49 and Teens and No. 1 in Adults 18-34.  In the 9p hour GLEE outperformed the finale of NBC’s America’s Got Talent by +29% in Adults 18-34 (3.6/10 vs. 2.8/8).  GLEE also showed strong retention from last week’s premiere – it retained 91% of its ratings in Adults 18-49 (3.2/9 vs. 3.5/9) and 97% in Adults 18-34 (3.6/10 vs. 3.7/11).

GLEE built upon its lead-in by +33% among Adults 18-49 (3.2/9 vs. 2.4/7), +33% among Adults 18-34 (3.6/10 vs. 2.7/9), +70% in Teens (1.7/6 vs. 1.0/4) and +18% in Total Viewers (6.9 vs. 5.7 Mil.)  So far this season, GLEE shows strong growth compared to FOX’s regular Fall’08 average in the Wednesday 9p hour, increasing +83% among Adults 18-49 (3.3/9 vs. 1.8/5), +125% among Adults 18-34 (3.6/11 vs. 1.6/5), +73% among Teens (1.9/7 vs. 1.1/4) and +45% in Total Viewers (7.1 vs. 4.9 Mil.)

Week two of SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE delivered a 2.4/7 among Adults 18-49 and ranked No. 2 in its hour among Adults 18-49 and No. 1 in Adults 18-34.  In the 8p hour SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE outperformed the finale of NBC’s America’s Got Talent by +42% in Adults 18-34 (2.7/9 vs. 1.9/6).  Compared to last week’s premiere SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE retained 89% of its ratings in Adults 18-49 (2.4/7 vs. 2.7/8), 93% in Adults 18-34 (2.7/9 vs. 2.9/9) and grew by 3% among Women 18-34 (4.0/12 vs. 3.9/12).

The show showed growth in its second half hour among Adults 18-49 (+4%, 2.5/7 vs. 2.4/7), Adults 18-34 (+8%, 2.8/9 vs. 2.6/9) and Total Viewers (+5%, 5.8 vs. 5.5 Mil.). So far SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE also shows growth over FOX’s regular Fall’08 average in the Wednesday 8p hour by +22% among Adults 18-34 (2.8/9 vs. 2.3/8).

For the first time ever FOX’s Thursday Premiere night outperformed NBC’s Thursday Premiere night among Adults 18-49.

FOX delivered its highest rated Thursday night with an entire lineup of scripted programming in over three years among Adults 18-49 (since 5/18/06 with That ’70s Show/That ‘70s Show/The OC) and in 12 and a half years in Total Viewers (since 1/30/97 with Martin/Living Single/New York Undercover.)

FOX won the night among Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54 and ranked No. 2 in Adults 18-34 and Teens.

Thursday night was the first time in 17 years that FOX won a Thursday night among Adults 18-49 with an entire lineup of scripted programming (since 8/27/92 with Simpsons/Martin/Heights).

The season premiere of BONES delivered a 3.1/10 among Adults 18-49 and grew +3% from its Thursday premiere last season in Adults 18-49 (3.0/8 on 1/22/09) and +4% in Total Viewers (10.4 vs. 10.0 Mil.)

BONES outperformed its Thursday average last season by +15% among Adults 18-49 (3.1/10 vs. 2.7/8), by +10% among Adults 18-34 (2.3/8 vs. 2.1/7) and by +11% among Total Viewers (10.4 vs. 9.4 Mil).

Compared to FOX's Fall'08 time period performance with regular programming, BONES is up +82% among Adults 18-49 (3.1/10 vs. 1.7/5), +35% among Adults 18-34 (2.3/8 vs. 1.7/5) and +160% among Total Viewers (10.4 vs. 4.0 Mil).

In the 8p hour, the season premiere of BONES significantly out-delivered NBC's season premieres of SNL Update and Parks and Recreation by +55% among Adults 18-49 (3.1/10 vs. 2.0/6), +15% among Adults 18-34 (2.3/8 vs. 2.0/7) and +100% among Total Viewers (10.4 vs. 5.2 Mil.).

BONES ranked No. 2 in the hour among Adults 18-49 and Adults 18-34 and No. 1 among Men 18-34.

The season premiere of FRINGE posted a 3.0/8 among Adults 18-49 and ranked No. 2 in the 9p hour among Adults 18-49 and Adults 18-34.

FRINGE showed substantial gains compared to FOX’s regular programming in the time period last Fall, increasing +58% among Adults 18-49 (3.0/8 vs. 1.9/5) and +81% among Adults 18-34 (7.8 vs. 4.3 Mil.)
