Robert and Bill,
When will you start giving the stats for Fox Business Network? CNBC’s counter-part. It has just recently hired away John Stossel from ABC and Fox is starting to put is muscle behind getting it coverage and ratings. And what is FBN’s current coverage?
FBN is in roughly 60 million homes at the moment (vs. CNBC’s 97 million)
As for their ratings – I’m sure Robert/Bill would be more than happy to post them, but at this point they’re SO LOW (roughly 25k/day) that Fox is too embarrassed to release them.
Anon, sorry, but:
1.) Nielsen pegs it in 47.4 million homes, not the “roughly 60 million” you cite
2.) it’s not an issue of FOX not releasing them, NIELSEN doesn’t release them (probably due to limited coverage)
every now and then reports are definitely ordered up and some information gets out, but they are not part of the stream of data Nielsen sends out (we see information for all basic cable shows on a weekly basis, whether the ratings are any good or not, and FBC isn’t included).
We’d post Fox Business ratings if we got them.
Wow, did I just hear Glenn Beck say “Thank you Peta” in regards to his boiling a fake frog yesterday.
I wish he wouldn’t come up with sillyness like that though. But can’t argue with his ratings.
Here are the numbers daily totals…..
Tues, 22 2009
FNC 18,856 52.3%
CNN 6,131 17.0%
MSNBC 4,835 13.4%
CNBC 2,314 6.4%
HLN 3,923 10.9%
36,059
Apparantly the only thing worse than Keith Obamaman’s ratings, are his ratings when he is on vacation. Of course, they replaced him with another mindless interchangeable Obama mouthpiece–zzzzzzz. Too bad they don’t give Joe Scarborough a shot….I would watch that. Plus it would send KO through the roof. Scarborough is the only one with any integrity left on there.
Sorry Robert, but FBN *IS* in 60 million homes (see near bottom):
http://www.foxbusiness.com/story/markets/industries/media/murdoch-wsj-newspapers-paperless/
As for point #2 – for a network in 60 million homes, I would imagine that it’s more of Fox Business saying NO to the ratings releases as opposed to Nielsen not reporting them due to “limited coverage” (60 million doesn’t seem like “limited” coverage to me…but I might be wrong)
@Charlie: He’s got to maintain his credibility. By acknowledging good deeds coming from even the “enemy”, he does just that. Besides, he, like PETA, loves pets. Unlike PETA, he does not love them enough to sacrifice human lives to save animals.
Sorry, ANON, but when it comes to Nielsen numbers, only Nielsen projections matter, and presumably they are very, very hooked in to the cable and satellite providers.
Edit: And I’ll ask my contact at Nielsen whether the lack of FBN data is a function of minimum reporting thresholds at Nielsen or at the request of Fox and see what I can find out.
Fair enough….so I guess Fox Business is inflating their numbers by over 20%?
Could it be a merely disagreements between bean-counters how you count things? If you count them one way, it is 60 million. Count it another way it is 47.4 million?
Charlie, I sent you a question on the previous days posting. I want your answer on it.
Bill and Robert,
Can you explain the logic of MSNBC having CNBC and FNC having FBN? Isn’t CNBC bleeding viewers from MSNBC? Saying FBN ratings are anything but microscopic, isn’t FBN doing the same for FNC? I mean there are FNC hosts that are also on FBN and promote their FBN shows on their FNC shows. FNC’s Neil Cavuto does it. Wouldn’t MSNBC and FNC want to keep as many viewers as possible?
Are there any long term graphs showing the ratings for the different networks over long periods of time? I’m not sure how far back the data goes, but I’d be interested in seeing the long term changes in viewership.
Scott, to be honest, it’s not something interesting enough to me personally that I’ve ever given it a moments thought, so I can’t offer a well thought out opinion. I can say off the top of my head that CNBC would get viewers who are interested or/and obsessed with the stock market and other markets, that MSNBC wouldn’t get. I assume the same would be true for FNC and FBN.
I answered Gibson on the other post!
Read your post 42 again Charile and answer either yes or no….. did Fox News and Glenn Beck exploit racism and hate when Beck said on FOX NEWS that the President was a RACIST and HATED WHITE PEOPLE? Yes or NO?
Scott Jensen, My understanding of cable network economics is incomplete, but I would assume that adding Fox Business Network to the News Corp stable of networks (cable and broadcast) may take some audience away from other New Corp. networks, but since the vast majority of TV viewers *aren’t* currently watching News Corp. networks, it would mostly get its viewers from *other* networks, and so would add net viewers.
Whether in the long run that addition of net viewers warrants the investment is a question you’ll have to ask Rupert himself.
Bill and Robert,
Thanks for your thoughts.
