ABC changes its plans for V; will air first four eps then shelve it until after Olympics

V 2009

via LA Times Showtracker:

ABC has confirmed that it has rejiggered the launch plan for the new fall drama, which is set to premiere  Nov. 3. The network has decided to air just the first four installments of the Warner Bros. Television-produced series — and then place "V" on hiatus until after the Winter Olympics.

I'm sure this news will disappoint more than a few who are looking forward to V...  I'm not sure what would've been involved, but I'd rather have seen it launch later, and then air new episodes continuously.  Especially since I think we're only talking about 13 episodes.

What a stupid idea… they’re gonna loose a lot of viewers on this

    oh hales nooo

  3. Sigh…

  4. romo

    stupid to the 8th power.

That seems rather odd. Are they having production problems but have spent too much time and money promoting the November premiere to move it or are they suddenly more afraid of the Olympics than they were before?

  6. Bruce

I was worried about something like this when it was announced that the production was taking a break. Damn. I was looking forward to V. All I can say is that if the show is good, ABC had better promote the crap out of it during the Olympics to keep viewers interested and aware of the show.

  7. I think clearly there are issues since they took a two week “time out” from production to get a handle on some of them, I guess this gives them more time to work on later episodes.

I agree, given the promotion (like last night’s 30 second spot in FlashForward) there’s really no way they could’ve justified delaying the premiere. But I’d still rather they did anyway :-D

    Son of a ….

This was the first ABC show that i was looking forward to since, well, I can’t even remember. And now they are going to trash it?

EW is making it seem like the show needs a complete overhaul.

Farewell “V”, we hardly knew you. :(

  11. Allen

That’s a shame. This is the show I’ve most been looking foward to this season.

  12. CK

They should just wait to start the premiere in March. Unless there is some super-incredible cliffhanger, viewers will not return. I was looking forward to this show. ABC has done a lot right so far this season. This is a blunder.

given the hype over the show, it could survive the delay… that said, the first 4 episodes better live up to the hype and have an ending that will keep people wanting to come back in march lol

its adding alot of risk to the shows chances, but as some have said, it may not be an option. at this point i don’t know if its better to wait until a march opening or go ahead and premiere this fall and air the show later. if the show can live up to the hype and deliver, most people will come back in the spring.

Way to go, ABC! Another nail in the coffin of network broadcast television! Idiots!

  15. Tony

Just move the premiere of the show till after the olympics your gonna hurt the show by doing this.

  16. Tony

I don’t think it’s the worst move. Viewership is down in December. ABC is planning only 13 episodes this season so if they bring it back in January they would have to hold it off during the olympics and only have about 5 episodes in the can during the higher viewership periods from Mar-May.

V will probably have a nice cliffhanger at the end of the 4th episode and it will get promoted to the nth degree for three months and more importantly it will get promoted heavily during the first two months of this season of Lost (type of viewers it is looking for).

    Not an awful move IMO.

  17. Eric

I agree with Tony that it is an ok move but my opinion hinges on how good the first 4 episodes are. If they are stinkers then the show is done. But if they do well and that 4th episode leaves a great cliffhanger then people will return in March. Like Tony said. Dec is repeat month anyway and they can use Lost to promote the return of V.

  18. tdot

they best not screw it up

This reminds me of when CBS gave Jericho a long, long break.

    I have a bad feeling about this…

  20. Petrie

It’s not completely bad. It would be nice if somehow they could pair it with LOST when it does come back.
