[...] Rupert Murdoch recognized this and created Fox News as a remedy. As business decisions go, this one was brilliant. If roughly 50% of the population is conservative and unhappy with left-leaning columns, then Murdoch’s network will have a potential to grab 50% of the viewers. The other 50% would be divided among the other news sources. That would leave Fox News with a 40-50% viewership and 15-20% for the other 3 networks. You can argue with concepts but you can’t argue with math (or ratings). [...]

Really! Nexxt thing is we'll see that conservatives were at fault for the holocaust. Or that conservatives are hiding seceret nuclear sites.

To say that a political affiliation is a "complex mental phenomenon", may be the dumbest thing I've seen posted here since Philosopher Jay was posting FNC's numbers from last year comparing them to this year. Unbelieveable...

Hi kenman,

You may have heard the statement that liberalism is mental illness, but there is now scientific evidence that conservatism is a complex mental phenomenon.
See http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2003/aug/13/usa.redbox:

****

"A study funded by the US government has concluded that conservatism can be explained psychologically as a set of neuroses rooted in "fear and aggression, dogmatism and the intolerance of ambiguity".

As if that was not enough to get Republican blood boiling, the report's four authors linked Hitler, Mussolini, Ronald Reagan and the rightwing talkshow host, Rush Limbaugh, arguing they all suffered from the same affliction.

All of them "preached a return to an idealised past and condoned inequality".

***

Here is the study: http://terpconnect.umd.edu/~hannahk/bulletin.pdf
It is essential reading for anyone trying to understand the nature of fascism and conservatism.

Here is the conclusion of the study:

"We regard political conservatism as an ideological belief system
that is significantly (but not completely) related to motivational
concerns having to do with the psychological management of
uncertainty and fear. Specifically, the avoidance of uncertainty
(and the striving for certainty) may be particularly tied to one core
dimension of conservative thought, resistance to change (Wilson,
1973c). Similarly, concerns with fear and threat may be linked to
the second core dimension of conservatism, endorsement of inequality
(Sidanius & Pratto, 1999). Although resistance to change
and support for inequality are conceptually distinguishable, we
have argued that they are psychologically interrelated, in part
because motives pertaining to uncertainty and threat are interrelated
(e.g., Dechesne et al., 2000; McGregor et al., 2001; van den
Bos & Miedema, 2000).
In conclusion, our comprehensive review integrates several decades
of research having to do with the psychological bases of
political conservatism. Most of what is known about the psychology
of conservatism fits exceedingly well with theories of motivated
social cognition. The integrative framework developed here
has implications for resolving historically controversial issues, and
we have argued that it has great generative potential for guiding
future work on the subject of conservatism. By attending to the
multiple, potentially reinforcing influences of epistemic, existential, and ideological motivations involved in political conservatism, we hope that future research strengthens understanding of belief systems in general. It should also shed light on the nature of relations between the micro and the macro, that is, on the reciprocal dynamics between the needs of individual and group actors
on one hand and the complex characteristics of social and political
systems, institutions, and organizations on the other."
***

Hopefully more studies like this will come out so that eventually a warning label may be put on shows produced by News Corp, warning that they bear no relationship to reality and are bad for your mental health or perhaps, News Corp will be dissolved as a dangerous criminal conspiracy to society. It produces a very potent mixture of racism, ignorance, intolerance, fear and hatred that, in my opinion, damages the individual human personality.

Born2Run is right. I consider myself a pretty solid conservative down the line but i cant stand Glen Beck. I dont think he is nearly as powerful as he likes to think he is.

Hilarious, Russ. Yeah, Obama is so worried about Glenn Beck that he scheduled a speech that would interrupt part of his show. Seriously?? The guy isn't that important. His ratings may be good for cable, but they are dwarfed by any of the real network's news. NBC Nightly News has 3 times his viewers every night. The majority of people who aren't to the extreme right think of Beck as a clown.

So I try to watch Beck tonight (DVR) and the President is giving a speech in the middle of the show. WTF!!!!! I'm starting to think that this wasn't a coincidence. I guess the WH is doing anything it can to silence Beck. Oh well, guess I will have to re-record his 1AM EST show tonight.

Bill,
I'm typing in Beck-Mathews, O'reilly-Olbermann, and Hannity-Maddow. While I'm typing, it's not much more work to just do all of the matchups. I hope I can stay on top of it ... If I do, I'd be happy to send you the charts and/or XL files.

By the way ... truth in advertising. I would describe myself as a conservative fan of FOX, but I'm not one to try and 'spin' the numbers. They are what they are. I realize that figures never lie, but liars always figure. Call me out if you think I'm 'figuring'.

I plotted the last few days of P2+ numbers (since Sept. 16th) for the 'big mouths' on both FNC and MSNBC including Beck, O'Reilly, Hannity, Matthews, Olbermann and Maddow. All of them show a mild downward trend. The trend is slightly more pronounced for FOX, but FOX's numbers are significatnly (3 to 4 times) higher to start with. I'm not sure I have enough data over a long enough period of time yet to draw any big conclusions ... but perhaps the new fall schedule is having some negative effect on cable news.

I'll try to keep plotting my 'Big Mouths' chart over longer and longer periods of time. If anything interesting pops out at me I'll let everyone know and perhaps make the charts available.

I plotted the last few days of P2+ numbers (since Sept. 16th) for the ‘big mouths’ on both FNC and MSNBC including Beck, O’Reilly, Hannity, Matthews, Olbermann and Maddow. All of them show a mild downward trend. The trend is slightly more pronounced for FOX, but FOX’s numbers are significatnly (3 to 4 times) higher to start with. I’m not sure I have enough data over a long enough period of time yet to draw any big conclusions … but perhaps the new fall schedule is having some negative effect on cable news.

Funny postings here. Yeah, the Democrats are really scared. They have the presidency, 60 seats in the Senate and a big majority in the house. You may think your unhinged yelling and lies are effective in your little echo chamber, but they're doing very little in the real world.

Olbermann's numbers dropped from 1.4M ave in Jan 09 to 1.08M at the time of his "quarantine" of FNC June 2. Recent numbers have been about the same.

We all know what FNC's numbers are, so I won't embarrass anyone by repeating them here.

The numbers are most likely down because the fall TV season started this week.

NBC's Datline producer Jane Stone Emailed Alex Rosenwald "BITE ME,JEW BOY!" after Rosenwald Emailed Stone to defund ACORN. WOW! You leftist democrats are a bit touchy these days. We are just pushing you over the edge. Just a little NUDGE. Don't get paranoid because your being watched all the time. Isn't free speech great? 40 years of silence is over open up the flood gates. This is fun watching and making the news now. It's getting hard to keep track of all these Leftist criminal organizations. Does anyone have a chalkboard to connect the dots. LOL!!!
Rankings seem to be relatively unchanged despite the fact that the usual hot-button issues are taking a back seat to UN goings-on this week.

Countdown was back up just over a million. I missed it. Who wss hosting?

Yesterday I recorded Larry King's interview with the vampire Hugo Chavez. It was so upsetting and nerve racking to see how Chavez dominated the whole conversation. If the best to CNN is Larry King, then let me tell you that CNN is in a senile state and ready to die. This is the reason these psychopaths choose CNN over any other news cable because they see no treat to their political agenda. I wish I could see Chavez interviewed by Bill O’Reilly; he would not have a chance. But that will never happen.

Just about everybody's numbers seem to be down this week compared to the past few. Maybe health care news fatigue is starting to set in.
