Note: due to a preemption in Chicago for a Cubs game, The CW fast affiliate ratings for last night do not accurately reflect the program's actual ratings and will more than likely change in the nationals.

CBS' NCIS hit a series high average viewership, and maintained the strong 4.6 adults 18-49 demo rating from its premiere, as CBS again trampled the competition on Tuesday night. NBC's results improved from last week, and The Jay Leno Show finished second in the 18-49 demo for the 10pm hour, but ABC's Tuesday woes continued as its entire line up slumped.
CBS maintained the same nightly demo rating average (4.0) as its premiere Tuesday night last week. Impressive, most impressive. NCIS won its time slot in viewers (20.65m, a series high), and the adults 18-49 demo (4.6 rating). NCIS: Los Angeles fell just 7% from its series premiere demo rating (4.1 vs. 4.3). The Good Wife kept 100% of its adults 18-49 demo from its premiere (3.1 rating). Stand back, the oncoming light you see is CBS' Tuesday night freight train.
NBC's Biggest Loser averaged a 3.6 adults 18-49 demo rating, up 16% from its 3.1 rating last week, and it beat NCIS: Los Angeles in the 18-49 demo (4.2 vs. 4.1) in its final half hour to top all shows. That strong lead-in may have helped The Jay Leno Show grab its 2.3 18-49 demo rating, second for the 10pm hour last night. It's a tough morning for all the Leno skeptics.
Hell's Kitchen slipped just a tick in the demo, posting a 3.1 adults 18-49 rating (vs. 3.2 last week). So You Think You Can Dance posted a 2.4 18-49 demo rating down just a tick from Wednesday’s telecast (2.5 rating).
ABC's summer woes on Tuesday seem to have carried over to the Fall, as it's entire line up fell. Of course Shark Tank wasn't going to match Dancing with the Stars ratings in the timeslot from last week, but the Dancing with the Stars results show a 9 could only manage only a 2.6 demo rating, its lowest rating ever for a regularly scheduled episode. the forgotten was, as it fell to just a 2.0 demo rating, down 23% from its premiere (2.6 rating).
With the baseball preemption in mind, 90210 was up a tick in the adults 18-49 demo and effectively flat in the 18-34 demo (1.5 rating). Melrose Place was down slightly in the adults 18-49 demo (0.75 vs. 0.8), and flat in the women 18-34 demo (1.4 rating).

You can see TV ratings from other recent Overnight ratings reports here.
Definitions:
*Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.
Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.
Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)
Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

“It’s a tough morning for all the Leno skeptics.”
LOL so true!
But Tuesdays will likely be a bright spot for TJLS, since it has such a youthful-skewing lead-in. The other nights might be a bit more tough…although he seems to be holding firmly above 1.5…..which is really grating on the nerves of allllll the Jay haters around here.
Ouch, the Forgotten is living up to its name. Why did anyone think it was a good idea to let Christian Slater have a second chance at television after My Own Worst Enenmy?
I’m amazed at how CBS absolutely DOMINATED the night, especially by winning five of the six half-hours in the Demo purely on overall viewership domination. Looks like moving The Mentalist didn’t matter too much, for now anyway.
The Forgotten dropped a lot from last week, but its retention out of Dancing appears to have improved. Good for it, I guess.
The Biggest Loser remains absolutely inexplicable to me, though its double-digit increase from last week (And The Forgotten’s decline) didn’t boost Leno much. Eh, at least it’s consistent.
I feel bad for Christian Slater. He’s a good actor and I’d like to see him succeed on a show. But I love that The Forgotten took a huge fall because I think that helps Castle’s chances of surviving this season. Castle, at least, has beat Leno pretty easily for 2 weeks now.
Wow, the CBS Tuesday lineup could settle in for years. The Good Wife is doing great in the cursed CBS-slot.
90210 is OK, I guess, quite stable and Melrose Place probably stopped falling, too, but unless Heather Locklear moves those numbers around 2mil or more, it’s done.
CBS is celebrating today! NCIS just keeps growing and LA and Good Wife stayed really even from their premieres. Tuesdays belong to CBS.
For once, NBC has something to cheer about too. Biggest Loser bounced back from the low ratings last week and not only did Leno not come in last, it even put up respectable numbers.
Airing SYTYCD during the regular season was a mistake for FOX. They’ll probably ride it out, but there is no way they’re happy right now. Fortunately for them, Hell’s Kitchen held up from last week, so it’s not all bad news for FOX.
ABC…OUCH! Dancing is way, way down. Shark Tank bombed as expected. And the forgotten lost to Leno (that has to hurt!). They better have some midseason shows ready to come in early, because they’re going to need them.
The Forgotten pilot was pretty bad. Boring, formulaic, poorly cast. I’m not sad to see it failing in just week 2. The Good Wife is pretty formulaic too, but has good casting and the occasional interesting scene ( everything that is not set in court).
What idiot thought up the brilliant idea of matching two dancing reality shows against each other? FOX is going to kill it’s own TV show and ABC’s.
FOX is going to kill it’s own TV show and ABC’s.
FOX is definitely OK with the last half of that sentence, and it may be willing to suffer a bit lower ratings for SYTYCD to achieve it! Plus, w/women 18-34, SYTYCD beat up on DWTS (3.4 vs 2.5) and I think that is the target demo for SYTYCD.
@ Holly:
“Airing SYTYCD during the regular season was a mistake for FOX. They’ll probably ride it out, but there is no way they’re happy right now”
Huh?
If anything, I’m sure Fox is QUITE happy with SYTYCD’s performance…look at Fox’s 18-34 performance; a solid 2nd. Not to mention they’re way up from last year, the show is killing CW in the same demo, it’s VERY competitive with the ABC dance giant in the 18-49 demo, and it’s dirt cheap (vs. their scripted failures).
There’s no reason for them NOT to be happy at this point.
I still don’t think SYTYCD was the right choice for fall, and the numbers bear this out, even before baseball interruptions. DWTS’results show is taking the predictable hits though due to SYTYCD.
What can you say about CBS. Good Wife looks to be there until the end of the year. Not going to call renewal yet though, until we see spring numbers (does GW get killed by NCIS dvr-viewing due to live Idol watching?)
I mentioned yesterday that Forgotten was less likely to live than Castle due to quarter hour data, and today’s numbers bear that out. Once Forgotten fails its Monday shot (if it even gets one), it’s done. And again, Eastwick’s declines were worse last week. I’m not even sure it will see 2.5 tonight.
We need to see Melrose’s W18-34… but talk about a disaster. And yet it may still run through the majority of the year, because CW has nothing left.
A shame about Melrose, because it finally got good with the return of “Old Melrose” cast member Jane.
Maybe Heather Locklear can save this show like she saved the first Melrose? That would be amazing, if she could save yet another show’s ratings.
@ Holly
“Shark Tank bombed as expected”
IT was getting the same numbers during the summer…with zero competition.
The show would be “bombing” if it fell from those numbers. The fact it held up against TOUGH competition is probably pretty comforting to ABC (although, of course, I’m sure they’d prefer a stronger performing show).
Who was the guest on Leno? The guest list has to have something to do with the up and down ratings of the show.
That is true of a lot of these late night shows. My guess is that Letterman should do better tonight with Madonna. She is always an interesting guest for him.
@Anonymous,
You’re right, I worded that badly. It is getting the same numbers as summer, but that’s not something to crow about either. Those numbers were really horrible for the summer and they look even worse now with the higher expectations of the regular season.
NCIS have 20.6M viewers and 4.8 in adults 18-49 which is roughly 6.3M. So, about 70% of its audience is outside the young adults, either 17- or 50+. Are kids watching NCIS? So, the elderly is mostly the audience of NCIS. I watch NCIS sometimes. It’s good but I think not the best TV show.
Attention Fringe Fans:
Moving the show to Tuesday might not help it either. NCIS:LA is turing out to be a hit. Sci-Fi is truly become a niche genue.
@Don, The problem wouldn’t be NCIS: LA since Fringe held up well agaisnt The Mentalist. The problem would be the lack of a strong lead-in.
Wow, Fox always, somehow, manage to stay high in the demos. That’s a good thing for them, they don’t need to bother with the number of viewers. They still have a good night, they’re not far behind NBC.
Even if CBS as strong numbers, the demos aren’t that impressive 2.8 (.2 more than Fox) in the 18-34 is nothing near wath AI and house can do.
JAY LENO HOLDING UP. HATERS EAT CROW.
NBC probably making more profit from Leno than CBS is from NCIS. LOL!!
