I’m glad Survivor is holding up. Let’s see if Flashforward can hold up another week or so. I will catch up with it tonight. HO\ow does this compare to the Grishom CSI at this point last year although maybe better to compare to late in the season with Fishburn.

Is the 1.5 and a dismal 5 million viewers for Leno considered acceptable by NBC on a Thursday?

  2. chris

can someone tell me what is the diffrence between the overnight ratings and the final ratings and why do they change?

  3. Chris, they change primarily in two ways:

1.) the preliminary overnight reports measure what was on during the timeslot on ALL the networks affiliates. So, if the CW affiliate in Chicago is showing a baseball game, the numbers for the game count in the overnights. In the finals they are stripped out

2.) there are overruns for certain shows (like Grey’s Anatomy into Private Practice). In the overnights, Private Practice would get credit for the overrun. In the finals, it’s trued up and Grey’s is all Grey’s and Practice is all Practice

  4. Jon

The retention between CSI and The Mentalist is stunning, while I think CBS should have waited a tad longer to move The Mentalist, it can’t be denied that it is performing very well on Thursdays.

  5. Holly

Overnight ratings count based on whose watching a channel (regardless of what is airing) during a 15 minute period. Final ratings count based on the show being watched. That means that preemptions for news or sports are taken out, that they account for overrun, etc. The finals also adjust for difference in primetime for the Central Time Zone (i.e. at 8:00, they were watching CSI, not Survivor). There are some other adjustments and maybe more markets included, but I’m not sure.

  6. Holly, I’m pretty sure the overnights adjust for time zone, too. Even the early meter market numbers are adjusted.

    Robert:

What’s with the over runs anyways? What do the networks think they are gaining by pissing us off with these stunts? My DirectTV DVR cannot handle these time conflicts (it won’t allow a late start on recordings a show) so I often can’t get something because of the 2 minute over run.

I’m guessing they think we will stay on their channel. How does that work for them when they have a dog following? From the numbers I’m guessing people switch – the only people getting screwed are those with DVRs and I guess the networks don’t like that anyways.

  8. Dee

Okay is it me, and I know it’s different nights, but did Criminal Minds, The Mentalist, and Cougar Town tie in the demo???

  9. actually I could be wrong about the metered markets: the moutain and central time zones are asterisked, but with no explanation of the asterisk! The numbers themselves lead me to believe they are adjusted, but, I’ll see what I can find out.

  10. Holly

When we had a discussion about this months ago, you said they weren’t

Or was that for the early numbers?

  11. Holly

    @AZTop,

The overrun allows the net to sell an extra minute or two of ad space at the price for the higher rated show. It could also encourage people to stay on the network (since the other shows have already started), and it makes their early numbers look better.

  12. AzTop, I think there are two reasons: one, they might rather have an extra minute of Grey’s than, say of Private Practice just as Idol would rather have an extra minute of Idol rather than of Fringe (last year was easy for Fringe due to “Remote Free”). I suppose secondarily there is the hope, that by extending you beyond the hour, you won’t be as quick to change over to another channel, and will stay to check out the next program. At least in the case of, say, Life On Mars, I wouldn’t say that worked out that well.

But I’m guessing an extra minute of commercials in Grey’s Anatomy does work out well :-)

  13. That’s SO six months ago, Holly. I’m not going to go back and read that thread, but I believe that was the one where Boris schooled me on the time zone adjustments :-)

  14. Catherine

The overrun really isn’t an issue if you are recording on the same network but it plays havoc if you are switching. Since I program my shows manually it would just be nice to KNOW there is an overrun so I get the whole program in case I am called away toward the end of the show.

  15. Greg

Do you know if I can find half-hour resulte for shows like CSI and The mentalist?

  16. Greg:

    CSI

    9:00
    - 15.445 million viewers
    - 9.5/16 HH
    - 3.9/10 A18-49

    9:30
    - 16.431 million viewers
    - 10.3/16 HH
    - 4.3/11 A18-49

    The Mentalist

    10:00
    - 16.222 million viewers
    - 10.3/17 HH
    - 4.0/ A18-49

    10:30
    - 15.279 million viewers
    - 9.8/17 HH
    - 3.6/11 A18-49

  17. thank you, Travis!

  18. :D

Mentalist at 10pm was an 11 share in demo (left that off by accident), so 4.0/11

  19. Sharon

I hope Flashforward’s ratings tick back up, it is so much better than Survivor. I have a feeling that if doesn’t beat survivor in overall viewers it will at least best it in the demos.

  20. forg

Really good numbers for The Mentalist but I bet some of the viewers are too sleepy to finish it that’s why there is a drop for the last 30 minutes but not bad at all.
