ATWT has been delivering some great storylines. I know that they can change things up to save the show. If it can stay at 5th or maybe move up to 4th it will remain for years to come. People said Days would be gone a few years ago and they have not only save the show but Days consistently comes in third every week in ratings. It just goes to show you with great teams making great stories, viewers will tune in. In my opinion ATWT is one of the best soaps.

As a past fan of ATWT, it's nice not to see it at the bottom. If the show airs for 3 more years and 9 months beyond 09/18/09 it will have the title of being the longest running television daytime soap in history before it is cancelled. Then it would take 7 more years after that for GH to take the honor away from them. I just don't think ATWT can hold on for almost 4 years; sad, but true, but if the right producers and writers took over this show they could turn it around. The show has potential -- someone with some talent has to spot it and then nurture it.

Considering the state of soaps right now, I have to say DOOL is a wonder. Considering the show was in sharp decline two years ago and then became its network's sole soap, left to depend on nothing but its own fanbase (unlike B&B, ATWT or OLTL which pick up viewers from the soaps around them), the fact that the show has stablized and actually shown signs of improvement over the past year really says a lot about its potential. Most industry insiders thought when Passions was cancelled by NBC, DOOL would fall to last place when left to fend for itself. And it did for the first couple weeks afterwards, then GL fell back to last place and DOOL experienced a surprising rebound, even after letting go of some of their most popular vets (John & Marlena). At least DOOL proves that soaps aren't dead yet.

I think the demise of the soap genre is a little premature. The ratings have dropped significantly, but what other outlet is there for advertisers that delivers that many viewers at once? Is any one cable channel beating over the air demos and numbers in this day part? If all the soaps were to go, the nets would lose what little they have and have to reinvent the wheel, come up with new programming and pay to promote something unknown that has a high risk of failure. Or they can throw in the towel, give up the time to affiliates and be done with it.

"Days of Our Lives" is the only soap to show year-over-year growth, and has been a solid and stable #3 out of the 8 (now 7) soaps. I would be surprised to see NBC cancel it and presume a replacement talk or game show could do better. NBC is contractually obligated to keep DOOL until Sept 2011 if it maintains a certain rating (dont know what that rating is).

A few years ago DOOL was renewed until Sept 2010. Forced to cut costs and lose a few higher paid veteran actos/actress's. I wonder if NBC will decide to keep it's lone soap or let it go and be soap opera free?

You have to assume the only soaps at the moment that are safe are the 3 Sony soaps (Y&R, B&B and DOOL) which have large audiences outside the US, and hence are relatively profitable for the producers/distributors.

ATWT will be the next to go, CBS has no stake in it, it isn't really popular overseas and it has a relatively older audience in the US.

ATWT is next to go and there are rumors that One Life to Live has about 1-2 years left before cancellation. So in 2011, there will be 5 soaps and no NY soaps. FOX and CW should start soaps.

And Dullhouse would love these soap numbers!

Cody, no there are those left that love soaps. Having just lost GL (which I watched for 25 years) I don't want to lose more of them. As a handicapped person and having survived cancer, I love my soaps, it's my escape from my own problems.

Shem i'mma have to disagree with the OLTL is dead comment. Sure its numbers are low but it number 6 in HH ratings beating ATWT, Number 4 with women 18-49, and number 4 with girls 12-17 and last with men 18-49. I assume ABC will be happy with that.

Any idea how the Price Is Right repeats did compared to GL? And also, you still have GL in the list of abbreviations at the end.
