ABC spins the numbers for Nightline:
“Nightline” BESTS “Tonight Show” IN TOTAL VIEWERS
15 WEEKS IN A ROW ~ FIRST TIME IN 15 YEARS
“Nightline” TIES “TONIGHT” IN ADULT 18-49 RATING
“Nightline” GROWS +10% AMONG TOTAL VIEWERS YEAR TO YEAR
WHILE “Tonight Show” DECLINES -43%
ABC News’ “Nightline” placed second among Total Viewers, Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49 for the week of September 28, 2009, according to Nielsen Media Research. This marks the 15th consecutive week “Nightline” outperformed NBC’s “The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien.” The last time “Nightline” outperformed “Tonight” 15 weeks in a row in Total Viewers was in 1994. Additionally, “Nightline” tied “Tonight” in the Adults 18-49 rating and shrank the A18-49 gap with NBC by 84% compared to the same week last year.
“Nightline” continues to experience growth compared to last year. The program grew +10% among Total Viewers versus the same week last year, as “Tonight” declined -43%. Among Adults 25-54 “Nightline” increased +1%, while “Tonight” declined -23% and CBS’ “Late Show with David Letterman” declined -2%. Among A18-49, “Nightline” grew +1%; “Tonight” declined -12% and “Letterman” declined -4%.
Season to date, “Nightline” is up 7% among Total Viewers, while “Tonight” declined -47% among Total Viewers, -30% among Adults 25-54 and -21% among Adults 18-49.
ABC News’ “Nightline” is anchored by Cynthia McFadden, Terry Moran and Martin Bashir. John Donvan and Vicki Mabrey are correspondents. James Goldston is the executive producer. The program airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m., ET on the ABC Television Network.
