Comments on: Thursday broadcast finals: The Office, Bones, Grey's, Supernatural up; Community, Private Practice down a tick

I have faith in Community. Since Parks & Rec grew out of it by two ticks, it’s clear that it built throughout the half-hour. More and more people realized it was on. I think next week it should get as high as a 2.2.

NBC is my favorite network, especially because they often stick with low-rated fare and give them a chance to grow and prosper (i.e. “30 Rock”, “The Office”–which initially had mixed reviews on top of it, etc.). So hopefully, they will give “Community” that same level of affection. Sure, they cancelled “Southland”, which is sad, but hopefully, FX or AMC could pick it up, as it would SOAR on either of those networks, or perhaps TNT or USA even. Or A&E….Or Starz, Showtime, HBO, I don’t care. Just bring it back. It’s brilliant, daring, sizzling, and fantastically acted/written/directed.

Back to NBC, I believe that the schedule could use an upheaval for the winter season: “30 Rock” OR “The Office” @ 8pm; “Community” @ 8:30pm; 30/Office @ 9pm (obviously whichever isn’t at 8); “Parks and Recreation” @ 9:30pm. I think P&R would benefit more neighboring either Tina Fey or its big brother show w/ Steve Carell. (I’d probably side with Fey–SNL draw and all.) Meanwhile, “Community” could use a strong lead-in, a la one of the two Emmy-winning shows, to help establish a stronger audience and core support for it. What do you all think?

Either way, I hope you fellow optimists are correct in suggesting that NBC will stand by it. It’s gotten raves or at least high commendations with a few criticisms from the top TV reviewers (Matt Roush is a huge fan, because he’s awesome), so couple that with the fact that it is easily the shrewdest and most hilarious new sitcom and they’d be a fool to let it go. I sure hope it manages to get some Emmy love. That would definitely help it. Emmy nod for Danny Pudi, please!

I wonder if I should harass NBC with letters, begging for them to alter the schedule to help “Community” survive? I guess anything is worth a try….It’s silly to put a new show at 8pm, and hope it pulls in viewers, rather than ensure that people tune in with a proper established lead-in….

Too bad that Community moved just when I was starting to actually find it pretty funny. I could see NBC keeping it around like it did 30 Rock its first season as a pet project-type thing, though, even if the ratings aren’t great.

Leno’s retention was bad, but remember, Thursday night is the only night his show gets stiff competition from both networks – ABC and CBS both have really strong performers at 10. Other nights CBS is the only competition – The Forgotten has been beaten by Leno two weeks in a row, and Eastwick is heading that way – and even then less so than Thursdays.

And yes, Community has been hilarious the last few weeks and good God I’m praying for renewal.

I did those numbers by memory and in most cases they were within .1 and .2 of the actual demos. Last week the Office had a 3.7 demo and Leno got a 1.6, this week with a 4.8 it got a 1.7. Leno kept 0.1 of the 1.1 increase in lead in, not a good result.

Am I the only one that thinks those are particularly bad numbers for Leno, his numbers seem to move between 1.4 and 2.2 depending on how strong the lead in is and how tough the competition is. Mondays with little competition and a poor lead in he seems to get 1.8 to 2.0, Tuesdays with a good lead in and little competition he gets 2.0 to 2.2, Wednesday with a middlimg lead in and little competition he gets 1.8 to 2.0, with a good lead in like the Office, giving him a 4.8 lead in, despite the competition (toughest in the week) shouldn’t he do better than 1.7, I would think with those numbers he should be over 2.0. Friday, with reduced expectations 1.3 to 1.5 is the best that can be expected. Retention on other days is 50% to 90% (Friday is the 90%) but this Thursday it was more like 35%, worst of the week by far. I realize that there may be both a floor and a ceiling to his ratings and the poor results from NBC may favor the retention percentages but the last half hour of Biggest Loser was about 4.0 and he still kept about half of that.

Yay Supernatural. Watching Dean the stuffing beaten out of him by Paris Hilton was as she said “awesome”. LOL

Supernatural really is one of the best shows on TV.

Bones is a quality show. Not only does it hold a core audience, it’s doing a great job catering to the type of viewer who tunes in every now and then for an episode.

TomKH, total viewers might not go that high for Bones but I see the demo growing. Amazing performance considering before FOX attempted to schedule Bones on a Friday!

Sad to see Community dip, would have much rather seen it tick up. Only silver lining is everything else doing poorly too and it is cheaper to make than the dramas, so maybe it will be able to stick around just because NBC has nothing else to replace it with right now. P&R no longer the most endangered comedy on NBC for now.

Wow, Office has a 37% lead over CSI in the demo despite CSI having a 58% advantage in viewers. I’m happy for it, but it still feels pitiful that NBC has a single scripted show with good numbers. Hopefully 30 Rock will maintain above-3 when it returns…
